The various distributions including non-profit ones like Ubuntu play a very important part in that they make it impossible for one particular company to monopolize the market like microsoft ended doing. As far as the choice of distribution is concerned, it filters down to one thing - support.

If a distribution is able to give good support in terms of frequent bug fixes , software updation and technical support (need not be like redhat's 24x7 type but even mailing lists, news servers and email support will do ) - then even if it is a small company or even a non-profit one, it doesn't make much of a difference.

Anyway if a firm decides to move over to linux, then they will be hiring atleast one linux professional to take care of their network. So eventually the type of distro doesn't make much of a difference.

Ultimatly to take the decision, there should be general consensus and the will to move over to open source equvalents of propritery softwares.

My opinion is that linux has come of age in the desktop arena and is here to stay.

I nearly missed out their RHCE certification exam which is a fully hands-on (no studying by rote) 5 1/2 hours exam - All of which makes embracing Redhat a worthwhile exercise.

For example, In these times of software patents and widespread consumerism, encouraging school children to embrace the use of GPLed softwares can teach them that sharing what they have with others is really cool. And I am sure they will eventually extend this principle to all walks of life which will make our society better place to live in.

I am not de-stressing the importance of a degree. Definitely a degree has value . But the college education if it has to pay dividends must be employment generation oriented.

And another thing, it has been widely acknowledged in the industry that the number one skill that a person should have to be employable is the "people skill". That is he/she should have a positive attitude, good written and oral communication skills and should be a team player.
This also should be integrated in the college curriculum.
If a person doesn't have that - even though he may be a rocket scientist - may not be employable.

But the actual no: of job vacancies is may be 1/10th of that amount. And the end result is largescale unemployment. And I know of just passed out engineers (having 4 year degrees ) working as sales personel for a pittance because they could'nt get a job in their area of work.

I think instead of churning out more and more college graduates, stress should be given to all round personal development and enterprenuership. Students should be encouraged to start their own enterprises - may be in small scale sector. And guidance should be given to help them in their cause. This is the only way to reduce this sort of glut in the education sector else it is bound to make all our lives less than peaceful in the long run.

What I meant was, unlike microsoft, apple is not proactive in marketing its computers and softwares in the third world countries as in the US and canada. But with the advent of the Mini (at a comparative price w.r.t a PC), and with some real push in the marketing area (where apple is weak or lagging behind), I believe we can see exciting times ahead.
