Whyyyy does anyone who uses a computer for business not have a backup of every piece of equipment?

Because generally, if something breaks, Newegg will have a brand new one delivered the next day. And if that's not good enough, Microcenter is half an hour away. And I don't have to look at all that old crap, which I give away on Craigslist.

Yeah, I live inside the DC beltway & have FIOS; one of my coworkers lives about 35 miles away, and can only get dial up. It's pretty patchy coverage, considering that she's basically between DC, Baltimore & Frederick, all of which have decent broadband. She ended up getting a Sprint MiFi, which is actually becoming a viable alternative in a lot of places & will get more so as they expand their 4G/WiMax coverage.

Let's say you're a small business that needs 25 seats.

You pay for a server license for your domain controller, and a server license for a backup domain controller. Since you're a small shop, that is also the box you run Exchange off of. For both Windows Server and Exchange, you need CALs in addition to the server licenses.

Then each end user basically needs a SEPERATE client license from the CAL, since their individual desktop OSes need a license, and for email, they need Outlook licenses.

If you're a small business that needs 25 seats you should buy SBS 2008, and the appropriate number of CALs. If you want a BDC, you buy the Premium version. You even get vm licenses. With 2008, you do need to buy Office or Outlook for Exchange access, unless your users are ok with the OWA (which is actually pretty good). I think the real money is made from larger enterprises, the SBS stuff is really pretty decently priced.

I'd buy one for OTA recording if they'd sell it without a subscription, but they won't so I'll get a Revo & a USB tuner card instead as soon as my Dish contract expires. I'll be happy to be done with their crappy DVR; the DirecTivo I had before was really great.

I second the HSA/MSA idea. If you and your family are reasonably healthy you can get a fairly low premium high deductible plan coupled with the pre-tax savings account. Unlike cafeteria plans the medical savings accounts aren't use it or lose it, they can roll over & at 65-ish they can roll over into an IRA. Most of your expenses should be dealt with from the pre-tax money, and if you hit your deductible the plan kicks in. Blue Cross has some plans which are good around here. You'll still be putting in around $10k/year for a family for a decent plan, but some of that may roll over if you're all healthy.

I switched to nearlyfreespeech.net after someone mentioned them in, I think, that 2005 slashdot article. I like their attitude (their support of free speech) and their prices. For small sites especially, they can be a real bargain; you only pay for what you use, and there's no "unlimited" with lots of restrictions nonsense. I've been happy with the speed, etc; once there was an outage that affected every site, but there was advance warning and I'm willing to handle that for the other advantages. Domain registration is under $9 & their DNS is easy to use. If you're dealing with a larger or complex site, maybe look elsewhere, but for a typical small brochure type site I think they're good.

As always YMMV, but I'm a happy customer.
