  1. Not great for offices on Affordable Home Backups for 10-100G Systems? · · Score: 1

The problem is that this is only really guarding against hardware failure. The reason I use tape drives at work is that most of the restores you need to do are because someone deleted something important & then a couple of weeks later someone else discovers the loss. With a single media system you don't get to keep a history. The individual tapes are cheap enough that you can keep history stretching back months.

  2. Re:Don't ban tools! on Network Webcurity Wishlist? · · Score: 1

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't tools like lock picks & even bolt cutters treated a bit differently than other tools? It was always my understanding that if you were carrying these tools for no good reason (ie, you're not a locksmith) you could be arrested for suspicion of burglary. You could probably extend this analogy to network sniffing tools - ie, if you're not a network administrator you shouldn't have them. I don't know that this is the case, but that's what I've thought.

  4. Still not there on Constructing a Windows-Less Office · · Score: 2, Insightful

I work in a small business environment, and, much as I like Linux as a server, I'm not going to be putting it on desktops anytime soon. Win4Lin isn't going to work for me - if I have to buy a licenced copy of Windows anyway, I'm just going to run that. Yeah, 98 sucks, but 2K is fine - I can leave my 2k desktop running all week with no crashing. Most small businesses I've dealt with don't use just Office & e-mail, there's often an industry specific app that they're wedded to, & it's usually for Windows only. It just doesn't make sense to jump through too many hoops to get away from that.

  5. Control of the characters is key on CG Idols - Human Not Required · · Score: 1

It seems to me that the control of these characters has to get away from traditional animation & more towards puppetry. To get good movements etc, a real actor could control all the movements with the CG character being essentially a mask. I'm thinking of a sort of vr situation, whith the results saved & edited. The role of actors would be changed, but the skills would still be needed.

  8. Re:War stories? on XOSL, an alternative to Lilo and Grub · · Score: 1

As others have noted, install 98, 2000, & then Linux. Grub does great; I use Mandrake at home in just this config, and the reason I used Grub in the first place was that a couple of years ago (it's probably changed now) LILO wouldn't boot to a partition beyond the first 8GB or so. Grub would, & I've been using it ever since. So I have a small 98 partition, a large NTFS one, & then a medium Linux install. On boot, you see grub & if you choose windows, you get the NT loader, where you can choose 98 or 2K.
