2. Counter the increased price of oil by lowering income taxes proportional to amount of tax on imported oil. I.e. consumers are overall no worse off. Maybe overall consumers are no worse off, but this would be a very regressive form of taxation, since poor people spend a greater percentage of their income on basics like oil.

I got bit by this one too - a user has one at home, & I couldn't get the drivers to install for a pcAnywhere printer. Pain in the butt.
Haven't you seen the cheap MP3 Discman type units? They're about $60 at Target. The marins on those things have to be tight, 75c is going to be significant.
I always assumed that if I set my DVD player's default language to Spanish or French that I would then get the Spanish or French soundtrack if one exists on the disk. Am I wrong? Guess I'll have to try it tonight.
I have a GX150 too & I was looking around for a low profile modem without much success. I just ended up with a standard modem in which the pcb was small enough to fit & I cut & bent the bracket. The case doesn't need screws to hod the card in place so you don't have to do anything fancy.
I was talking to an off-duty PG County MD cop one time & he was telling me about getting a ticket on the Jersey turnpike because they calculated the speed between entry & exit. He wasn't happy that they didn't let off a cop... though he apparently did get let off after wheelying his bike, drunk, in front of the Capitol & crashing.
I used to be a teacher & you have to go get your fingerprints taken & a check run before you can begin. I think this is a good thing. The thing I thought was funny was when the report comes back, instead of just saying "We found no convictions" or something, it goes down a long list of infractions saying "So-and-so has never been convicted of running a house of ill repute" etc. There were about 4 pages of these, some of which sounded pretty obscure.
It's always been my impression that one of the advantages of dealing with Dell or Compaq if you're a large corp is that they'll guarantee the platform for a certain length of time. That's important if you've got a corporate Ghost imagethat you're not going to want to change all the time. Sure, the local store will get you a replacement sound card, but will it be the exact same chip? Same with motherboards etc. Even if it's newer/better, if you're managing a ton of desktops having them all be the same makes life easier.
At my first job in retail the manager had a $100 bill pinned to the wall. One day I asked if it was from the first sale or something. He said, no, check it out. I look again, no big deal. I look once more and notice that it's really the center two fifths of a one with the ends from a hundred crudely stuck on with tape. The cashier hadn't had enough change to break it & had given it to the manager, who hadn't noticed either. The printing is right, the paper feels right, it all looks fine. This scam works because as long as 50% or more of the bill is intact it's still legal, so you can cut the ends off a hundred & still deposit it or cash it at a bank. This would be much harder to pull off if the bills were different colors.
I've started using staples or officemax for monitors, since they ship free over $50, usually next day. If you're not too picky you can get a decent 17" with some soft of rebate for under $150 easy.
Sure, you can store 14 DVDs today, but in 10 years you'll be trying to store HD-DVDs which will each be many times larger... and hopefully you'll have Blockbuster's entire collection on there;o) I know I'd like to have enough space that I could store a copy of every DVD my friends own or I rent, just 'cuz. It'll happen in a few years, probably not even 10.
I remember reading this story years ago & it was the first thing that popped into my head when the news of the 'dirty bomber' came out. This kid managed to piece together a decent amount of radioactive material. Since the real point of a dirty bomb is fear, the actual amount of material doen't have to be that great to achieve the desired effect ie. closing down a large section of a major metropolitan area for cleanup & causing mass panic. If a boy scout can gather this much material, then any dedicated individual can.
I'm going to have to go listen to one I guess. So far of course, 'silent' PCs really aren't; they mostly all have a fan on the psu & unless you're using a C3 chip most have fans on the coolers. Maybe I'll end up waiting for the Via Edens to take off, that seems like it's really what I want. If the C3 at 1ghz+ can decode DivXs without jumping then it would be ideal, and more flexible for someone like me who doesn't care about games but would like to run educational software etc in the living room.
As it happens, I've been looking into small form factor / silent pcs for playing DivXs, and I can't justify the cost. The K6/500 I'm using now is maxed out, a bit too noisy, and won't play all the movies I have. Plus it won't fit in the armoire. If I can get a $200 box to do what I want (with a modchip, ok), that'll fit in with the other stuff & not have a bunch of fan noise, I'll get it. If I can play games on it that's fine too, but I really don't care about games too much. Maybe my daughter will like it when she's a bit older.
I second that. Even though I run 'lite' iMesh & Kazaa I still only do it in a virtual machine & then copy the files, or on a machine I only use for watching movies on. I know this isn't going to be what most people do, but even though it's a pain sometimes it's comforting to know your main box isn't going to get messed up.
Since he mentions recurring billing, I would guess that they're providing a service for which one might be charged a monthly fee (such as an ISP) & people let them charge each month automagically. I do that with my home ISP.
I have never used Exchange, but a friend of mine admins a large (50,000+ users) Exchange system. Even a few years ago, running on NT4, their servers did NOT go down, ever. They scheduled a reboot for patches etc every 6 months, that's it. I have had lots of Netware boxes up for over a year, but not Netware 5 running mail. I inherited such a box & it needed to be rebooted every month or two. Now I've replaced it with a Linux based mail server & I'm much happier. Still have a 4.11 box cranking along happily, even happier since the 5 box is no longer giving annoying messages about it's licences. And my 2000 Server has been up for coming up on a year with no problems.
For most people, myself included, I think that mp3s are fine. I have a decent stereo setup, and I can't really tell the difference between a properly ripped 128 mp3 playing through my Apex DVD/MP3 player and the cd I ripped it from when I flip back & forth on the same system. It's fine for my needs. Certainly there are lots of improperly ripped mp3s out there if you're downloading stuff, but if you rip your own cds carefully there's not much of a sacrifice.
I would certainly pay 25c per song for most MP3s - it'd be worth it for consistent quality. I might not get everything that way, but if it was something I really liked, I'd go that route first.
That's kind of a lame argument, since much (most?) crime is directed towards poor people, auto theft included. In fact, car theft is probably less of a concern to 'boardmembers' than to the general population.
Friends of mine race 600cc motorcycles & they use an aftermarket programmable ignition/injection box. The cool thing is that this box can talk to a dyno through its serial port. This means that you can put the bike on the dyno & let the dyno try different settings until your curves are optimized. Used to take 8 hours of someone sitting there revving it, now you can go drink coffee for an hour & you're done. (Of course, building the engine still takes a lot of time, money & knowledge.)
I've taken a couple of computer related classes at University of Maryland University College - the continuing ed part of UM. There are a bunch of classes, & I've been happy with them. They're the same classes, for the same fee, as you'd get on campus. Last class I took there were people from all over the US & at least one in Europe...

Cyberguys has a light like you describe for $9.95 - they call it the Inova Microlight.

Or you could run it into one of those little desktop rock fountains you can get - hell, they even have a pump & are designed to run 24/7. Hmmm...
