Finally, we can make a more effective spam filter:
"hmm, the user is male, and judging from the emails his wife's journal entries... I don't think he needs this penis enlargement, or these breast enlargement pills"
I predict that if/when such a technology becomes prevalent, it will greatly reduce the human ability to make decisions.
Take for example any simple video game, how about MahJong (the stack of tiles that you have to match pairs on to remove them).
If you play it without the computer's aid, you develop a good eye for it and can do quite well. However, if you constantly hit the 'help' or 'hint' button, you become dependant on it showing you the next move, and never develop the skill for yourself.
To put it in context with other situations: How many of you need a calculator to find a 10, 15, or 20% tip amount? Worse, how many of you need a calculator to add that extra 3.25 onto your 21.75 bill? I admit, it takes a great bit of effort for me to add simple numbers in my head simply because I don't exersize that ability enough.
GAH! That's why it's a good idea to save power - I spend roughly $30/mo on power and that's in the heat of the summer.
If I had to pay $180-200/mo for power... you'd better believe i'd be turning a few things off.
And THANK YOU for mentioning water conservation as a good thing. I live in Colorado and I'm sure you heard about the wildfires last summer due to severe drought... it really is a big issue here and everywhere else. PLEASE CONSERVE WATER everyone!
I think I should point out to people interested in this that it cannot be produced with one camera, atleast not for moving objects.
Think of the girl diving into a pool.. How are you going to move to the side a few degrees and take a picture fast enough for none of the water to move at all between shots?
This is similar to the still-3d effects in the Matrix movies, where they have a series of 10's or 100's of cameras around an object and all take one picture at the exact same time. then to make the movie you progress through cameras, rather than frames.
These simple 3d animations are 2 cameras side by side taking the same picture at the same time.
If you want to do this at home with one camera, it must be a non-moving object (still cool though)
1. As other people have pointed out... the safety of using such dietary supplements is not known. go read their posts for more info.
2. Creatine is intended to help bulk muscles. It is intended to be used with a rigorous exersize routine. Chances are if you eat this stuff just for the brain effects it may make you even fatter.
I think America's fixation with solving our problems other ways is a big problem in itself. If you have a bad memory, it's probably just because you never pay attention (that's my problem anyway). If you have "A.D.D", you probably just don't have any self control, that's my problem. If you're overweight, it's because you don't regulate what you eat, and you don't exersize. I changed my diet and workout regularly and am getting in great shape pretty quickly.
Before you go out and buy pills or pay a doctor to diagnose your behavior or something, or even buy the "natural" cure (those pills filled with some sort of grain or something), just try altering your own behavior first.
If people lived 200+ years, and were in good shape, would we all not just have sex like bunnies? Women hit menopause at ~50... that leaves 150 years of pregnancy-free, disease free (by medicine) sex.
(disclaimer: i've never used Gentoo, this is all just from what i've read about it)
Isn't Gentoo compiled specifically for your machine, with all sorts of optomizations and such? Doesn't that contradict the concept of burning a cd that can run on (almost) any system?
Is that really a good thing? Concidering most people don't know what Linux is, I doubt being the defendant of a case like this makes a good impression - regardless of whether or not it's innocent.
I am in the process of applying for MS jobs (I know, flame bait - hear me out, I just wanna know if I'm good enough for them, I don't know if I'd accept the job)... anyway:
I read on their site that they spend over $5,000,000 (thats right, 5mil) per DAY on R&D. Yes they have the money in the bank, but it also means that's money that ISNT funding 104 days of research.
It seems to me that there is a trend going about for high wattage PSUs. Don't most systems (even high end Athlon XP's) idle at something like 150w with a hard drive and cdrom, and video card in?
Don't these systems peak at something like 200-250w (with 3d card suckin juice, and 100% cpu usage, etc).
Why the hell would you pay $150 or so for a 450 or 500w (or more!) system? Unless you're running multiple CPUs or some sort of file server with a whole bunch of drives... I just don't see the point, it's just gonna run up your electric bill and add more heat (and therefore fan noise) to the system.
First: I look at some businesses that do hard drive recovery - the prices are exhorbitant! I could buy 2 replacement drives for those prices.
then... So I go get a replacement hard drive ....(this drive doesnt fix it)....
So I ring around some places and besides having to deal with some hopelessly non-tech sales people I actually find a shop that goes to the effort of looking on the drive for me and it's the right firmware! Cool! I go and buy this one.
So he doesn't want to have the data recovered cuz it costs the same as 2 new drives... but he buys 2 new drives to recover this hard drive?
from the article: One of my favourites - put the hard drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer - cooling it down shrinks the parts and may enable the drive to spin up properly. I actually try this and get lots of funny looks from my wife. Still, it doesn't work.
RFID tags cannot be reporgrammed. and they do send out signals (on request from scanner).
RFID tags have a very small amount of READ ONLY memory on board, which is used to store their unique ID. Furthermore, the devices to not have the functionality to write to the memory, even if it was writable. So you can be sure no one will ever buy a RFID reporgrammer on Ebay, well... maybe they will, but you can be sure it's a hoax and they got ripped off.
Secondly, they DO send out the signal. barcodes need a clear direct line of site to a scanner to be recognized. RFID tags work in a much different manner. A scanner could be put in every light post in a city to monitor the RFID tags planted in tires, and track individual cars (or general traffic patterns). Worse, due to the nature of the technology a directional antanne could be used to read an RFID tag from large distances.

Anyone else notice the web seems a lot faster without all those eastcoasters takin all the bandwidth? ;)
This has been happening more and more lately.. seems like half the stories on HardOCP show up on slashdot just a few hours later.
:p
I wonder if a few readers discovered the [H]ardOCP slashbox and decided to just submit everything they saw
On second thought, no..
we've always been at war with the middle east
Seriously, if this works... it marks a very sad point in our development as a society (obviously).
If someone in power can just declare something so obsurd, and have it accepted as the truth, then what's next? We've always been at war with Eurasia.

Soon, SCO jokes will be treated with the same loathing as "All your base", "In Soviet Russia", and "Imagine a beowolf of..."
I believe the assumption is based on the following...
There are 2 ways to look at "medically prolonged life": Canceling the cause of aging, and fixing things when they go wrong.
If you cancel aging, then your body should be able to keep itself in the state it is in at the time aging is stopped.
If you just fix things as they go bad... then yes, there's gonna be a lot of old farts around, and I don't want to be one of them.
If people lived 200+ years, and were in good shape, would we all not just have sex like bunnies? Women hit menopause at ~50... that leaves 150 years of pregnancy-free, disease free (by medicine) sex.
Woo!
I disagree... I think atleast 2 different outcomes are more common:
1. People get bored with their jobs, and move on to another field.
2. Over that span of time societal needs will change and jobs will be eliminated while new ones rise.
Either way, throughout a person's life they would work in a wide variety of fields.
And that still doesn't cover where they live and what they eat. I think we have too many people right now as is.
I rather enjoy the thought of hostile operating systems that take what they want and give nothing in return.
Here ya go!

In conclusion, your comment is crap.
This has always been an annoyance to me, that I cannot scroll horizontally easily.
I quickly figured out an easy remidy though... set your middle-click to pan around.
So, while this is kinda neat... it's not a necessity.
* This is vaporware, the patent system is worthless, rah rah rah!
* Yey! Finally [fill in reference to movie like Minority Report or Final Fantasy Spirits Within]
* Something funny
Did anyone else shudder at the thought of 5 Rush Limbaugh CDs?
Take your pick at E-Baum's World. SimGirl is one of my favorites.
Soldat is great multiplayer fun
