I have the opposite reaction to splash screens. To me, they are like the wrapping on a Christmas present. Atleast, for the first bootup of a game. Of course by the 50th time you start it, it does get a little old. But those first fiew times always build the anticipation:)
Executive summary: I'm 23, and I have pretty much stopped gaming. I still play a few games now and then.
Things that seem to make a game enjoyable for me: - Good for parties/friends
- fun to watch someone play
- fun to play together - small time commitment (15 minute session vs several hours) - Smooth flow
- Very little searching for items, large travel times - things that make me feel like I'm wasting time
For example: Max Payne 2 and Metroid Prime. Both are excellent games, but Max just didn't keep my attention well enough for me to finish it, or took too long. Metroid was too much of "oh I forgot this item, I have to go look for it over there -- a 15 minute travel. Ooops, I need this to get over there, which is back where I came from"
a couple games I DO enjoy and why: Super Monkey Ball (and #2) - packed full of fun mini games. You can play for 15 minutes and quit -- no huge time commitment. Great for mini parties. Mario Kart 64 - same as SMB.
I work at YDL, and we are in the process of doing internal tests on 4.0. We began the testing process Thursday last week, and have already gone through 3 Alpha versions. We hope to have 4.0 ready for release by end of next week. (~Aug 1).
Get some decent computer vision going, and since your hand can be overlayed on the screen, just use your hand as a mouse. much like tom cruise's setup in minority report.
*yawn* typical slashdot comment. Just because things work a certain way for you does not mean they work the same for everyone else.
The sad thing, I just realized, is that a lot of us are computer scientists, who should know better.
To counter your arguments: I currently have 11 programs open, 7 of which use the task bar, 4 of which use the system tray. That is a light load. Oh, and 2 of those have about 20 subwindows each. Keep track of that in your head, sure.
Think everyone likes leaving sounds enabled? How about even being in an environment that allows sounds (an office, library, lecture hall..)
Alt tab: Yeah, I use it, most experienced users do, but most people don't even know keyboard shortcuts exist.
Anyone read the short novel he Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect? Near the end the main character, Caroline, rows across a huge ocean (on another planet) to reach someone.
Wrong. Actually he was referring to the hilarious cartoon: End of the World

I assume your obvious reasons being she was hot and female... but I disagree, I never thought she was all that hot. I thought she was mostly annoying... "Captain, I'm sensing a lot of distress" (well no shit, the ship is in a battle).
The 4155 can be obtained from newegg for $400, and the Zaurus has a list price of $700 (almost 2x the price), and the only extra thing the zaurus offers feature-wise is a VGA screen. Also, the 4155 is the 2nd-smallest PocketPC right now (with the 19xx series being 1st), small enough to keep it in my pocket all day without it being annoying.
No. "Time shifting" (much as the name implies) is "shifting" the ability to watch something to another "time". Timeshifting has nothing to do with rewatching or editing.
However, I do think we should have the right to record/rewatch/keep for personal use anything that has been broadcast - be it music, movies, or tv shows.
And just how do you propose they pay for the thousands of dollars per month in bandwidth, manhours to maintain the site, not to mention content generation?
Either you PAY to use the site, or you view the ads that other people PAID to have displayed.
Nothin is free (as in beer) buddy, get used to it.
and i'm saying graphic style shouldn't matter so much. Personally, I thought Wind Waker felt a lot more like "Zelda" than the n64 games (especially Majora's Mask).

He's got a 2 digit ID!
Not zero compression, but loss-less compression like PNG.

What would be better is hand gestures.

I was about to JAR up a homework assignment to turn in, which consisted of say: ...
A.java
B.Java
C.java
I typed jar cvf *
Proper usage is jar cvf myjar.jar *
The shell interpreted * to be 'A.java B.java C.java...' and jar overwrote A.java.

Isn't that why we have used books? Ebay, Amazon, Half.com. I'm sure somewhere you can find a book for an older version of a piece of software.
Did I just miss it, or is it that no where on their site do they give a demo/screenshot/preview of what the font looks like?
I just use 2 computers :)

I gotta ask....
;)
how do you point the flash at the ceiling, but keep the camera pointed at the subject?
Most of us don't have fancy enough cameras for them to be separately movable.
Actually that's an Emacs control sequence.
Bash uses emacs control sequences by default, but can easily be set with either of 2 ways...
1. set environment variable EDITOR=vi
2. at prompt, type: set -o vi
then bash will act just like vi
Oops....
same guys, but I meant to link to This cartoon ("Mario Twins")

I'm probably going to be modded troll for this, or just ignored, but it's gotta be said.
Compare this: set of pictures of a HP iPAQ 4155/4150
with this (the article) set of pictures.

Yes, i own a 4155.

nonono, they'd never release new features in a service pack.
;) They just add a new theme, and move menu items around.
Oh, wait... what new version of windows has really offered new features anyway?
And just how do you propose they pay for the thousands of dollars per month in bandwidth, manhours to maintain the site, not to mention content generation?

This guy is just another guy blabbing about how *he* doesnt like the visual effects of a particular game.
Tons of people (myself included) lived the look of Wind Waker, and besides, the game isn't about the graphics, its about the fucking GAME.
quit trolling.
previous article only showed one picture of the DS
this has screenshots for zelda (WOW!), a trailer for for a new mario game, and an initial game list for the DS, plus more I probably missed.
Just because it's on the same topic doesn't mean its a dupe. This article has way more info than the 1st.
