im sure the slight camera angles make all the difference in the world ;)

Reminds me of an experiment I tried a couple years back. Hook up 2 webcams to your PC, place the cams about eye-distance apart, and then position the windows on your screen so they're side by side, and play with the horizontal gap between them. How cross your eyes, ala Magic Eye, and you get to see your head in 3d.

I wonder if it would be possible to find 2 tv networks whose cameras are just the right distance apart, put 2 tvs side by side and see the president in 3d :)

That does seem to solve that problem, but there is one more. I understand though that this is a problem with Outlook, and doesn't really pertain to migrating AWAY from outlook, but its still something I wanted to mention.

Outlook cannot import MBOX files. So if you're thinking of trying Thunderbird for a while, just be aware that you cannot import your mail back to outlook should you decide you like Outlook better.

Best bet is to tell Thunderbird not to delete messages from the server, and download them with outlook as well.

If you can tell me how to get years of archived email from Outlook's .pst files into whatever Thunderbird uses... I'll concider it. Also, convincing me that I will still be able to access that archived email several years from now helps and that the file formats won't be incompatible.

A story to explain my concern about future compatibility:
I used to use ICQ back in 'the day', and each new build had a different database structure, so I had to migrate my entire message history each time I installed. Of course now, I have some version of those logs, but it is impossible to find a version of ICQ that will open them.

In a deeper post on this thread you complain that PDF is overused by teachers/etc. I would like to point out that one HUGE reason teachers use PDF is because it is secure. Once they create the PDF, it is non-modifiable.

  11. Re:Using a new legit tech for piracy only hurts it on Shifting From P2P To Stream Ripping · · Score: 0

The big difference, atleast in the eyes of the artists:

Radio stations (real ones - AM/FM) PAY tons for the right to broadcast those songs. How many internet radio stations (the streamcast ones or whatever) have paid a license to broadcast each of those songs? Thats why radio stations have commercials, to pay for the right to play songs.

Now you listen to it for free, rip it, and probably throw it up on a P2P network. If you like the music so much, encourage the artist to produce more by buying it.

  12. Using a new legit tech for piracy only hurts it. on Shifting From P2P To Stream Ripping · · Score: 4, Insightful

You know why the RIAA is going after P2P? Because its used mostly for piracy. Sure, some legit. songs are being downloaded, but the majority of it is blatant piracy.

Now here we are saying Internet radio is good, legitimate fair use; and then we use it for piracy.

Just like how Apple tried to be relaxed with their AAC DRM, but people just had to crack it. Sure, ther e are valid reasons for this, but once again people will use a valid, legal technology for piracy and ruin it for the rest of us.

  14. I hate shuffle on The Joy of Random Shuffle · · Score: 2, Insightful

When I listen through an album, I absolutely hate shuffle. I like to know exactly what is next. Usually the album is on repeat too.

I think though, it has to do with my style of music as well. I like techno and classical quite a bit, both of which are highly repetative and predictable. I often use music as a way to keep my mind focused while working, and so it has to follow a steady pattern. If it were to jump around, I'd probably get distracted by it. Sometimes I even pick a single song and leave it on repeat for hours. Rarely ever do I create playlists with mixed artists or albums, its either 1 song on repeat, or a full album on repeat.
