    Actually one needs to consider the type of statistical universe used, not just the units used. Considering that planetary processes operate in timeframes of thousands of years and longer, one MIGHT consider a million years worth of data as the appropriate sample size. . .

    The problem is, that the Red/Blue State paradigm is flawed.

    The REAL split is between the Cities and Not the Cities. And goes back quite a while, at least half a century.

    The operating level of political difference is really at the County Level, not the State level.

    Case in point, look at all the Secession movements: "Jefferson" (i.e. Northern California), the current Colorado secession efforts, even the fledgeling Maryland effort for the western-most counties. All are effectively de-franchised by the sheer numbers in other state districts, and have no poltical effect on the State at all

    Technology allows Government to be more effective at the lower level: let it.

    You DO realize, by stating that you have no fear of being hacked, that you just painted a target on your forehead.

    ANYONE can be hacked. It may not be easy, or cheap, but you can be hacked, and even worse, may get hacked and NEVER KNOW IT.

    And then there is the flip side: weapons tech adapted to civilian use. Modern electronics come to mind, as do many of the techniques of trauma surgery, developed in war zones when dealing with wounded. . .

    . . . I tend to build my PC's, and do incremental upgrades. And, as such, I have 8 year-old cases and 6-year-old power supplies and monitors on a boxes that just did a Motherboard and Video upgrade last year or two. And so my waste profile is close to throwing away a tablet, rather than the whole PC. But I suspect I'm in the minority. . .

    And even sadder, the usual life of a Republic is around 200 years. Which explains much of Modern America, which seems to be in transition to both a Police State AND an Empire. After all, we now seem to have both a de-facto permanent underclass and a self-sustaining de-facto aristocracy. . .

    As for beef cattle. . . . I suspect they'll mostly be going away in 20 years or so. . . once they find a decent way to mass-produce vat-grown protein that replicates taste and mouth-feel of "real" meat, beef cattle will decline to a niche market. . .

    Really. Pebble-beds. LFTRs, and other modern nuclear tech looks to be a viable solution. Save the petrochemicals for plastics and pharmaceutical feedstocks. . .

    Now, burning natural gas, otoh, looks like a viable alternative to petroleum for vehicle use. . .
