. ..except, of course, that it was NOT UPS (or FedEx, or DHL. . . ) that promised the 2-day shipping. The MERCHANTS did. And that's who the medium-large can'o'whoop@ss should be opened on. . .
Actually one needs to consider the type of statistical universe used, not just the units used. Considering that planetary processes operate in timeframes of thousands of years and longer, one MIGHT consider a million years worth of data as the appropriate sample size. . .
Depending on the state, Loving an Android may be against the law, and if not, chances are, it will be by the end of the next legislative session . . ..(evil grin)
The problem is, that the Red/Blue State paradigm is flawed.
The REAL split is between the Cities and Not the Cities. And goes back quite a while, at least half a century.
The operating level of political difference is really at the County Level, not the State level.
Case in point, look at all the Secession movements: "Jefferson" (i.e. Northern California), the current Colorado secession efforts, even the fledgeling Maryland effort for the western-most counties. All are effectively de-franchised by the sheer numbers in other state districts, and have no poltical effect on the State at all
Technology allows Government to be more effective at the lower level: let it.
. . ..the older brothers and fathers of the young ladies "exposed" on the website would stop by and have a "chat" with the guy. The site would then go offline very soon thereafter. . . either because he was sufficiently scared, or he was laid up in the hospital, and couldn't pay the hosting bill. . .
Indeed. Let's look at the classic case, Alfred Nobel and Dynamite. The same exact substance both aids mining AND is used in weapons. . .
And then there is the flip side: weapons tech adapted to civilian use. Modern electronics come to mind, as do many of the techniques of trauma surgery, developed in war zones when dealing with wounded. . .
. . . I tend to build my PC's, and do incremental upgrades. And, as such, I have 8 year-old cases and 6-year-old power supplies and monitors on a boxes that just did a Motherboard and Video upgrade last year or two. And so my waste profile is close to throwing away a tablet, rather than the whole PC.
But I suspect I'm in the minority. . .
Not necessarily "Yay Canada". I live far enough away from a major metropolis that we still leave doors unlocked, and have never had a package disappear. I think it's really more like "Yay Low Population Density". . . .
It's actually a common argument for intractable moral problems. You see it all over, from personal arguments, to online flamewars, and even from Oprah. . .
. . ..but the default tendency of human goverments DOES seem to be the Empire, no matter what name you call it.
And even sadder, the usual life of a Republic is around 200 years. Which explains much of Modern America, which seems to be in transition to both a Police State AND an Empire. After all, we now seem to have both a de-facto permanent underclass and a self-sustaining de-facto aristocracy. . .
As for beef cattle. . . . I suspect they'll mostly be going away in 20 years or so. . . once they find a decent way to mass-produce vat-grown protein that replicates taste and mouth-feel of "real" meat, beef cattle will decline to a niche market. . .
Really. Pebble-beds. LFTRs, and other modern nuclear tech looks to be a viable solution. Save the petrochemicals for plastics and pharmaceutical feedstocks. . .
Now, burning natural gas, otoh, looks like a viable alternative to petroleum for vehicle use. . .
Actually, it's WORSE than that. My eldest daughter went to a TSA Hiring Event. She was told she scored TOO HIGH on the qualifying exam. . .

You're not REQUIRED to drive with your mother-in-law. . . . (evil grin)
No need, the gamma flux will light the match for you. That, and nearby planets as well. . .
. . . . the gang finds that it was Farmer Brown all the while !!!

You DO realize, by stating that you have no fear of being hacked, that you just painted a target on your forehead.
ANYONE can be hacked. It may not be easy, or cheap, but you can be hacked, and even worse, may get hacked and NEVER KNOW IT.

For that matter, I suspect that they'd be vulnerable to one of those hand-held "taser" high-voltage personal defense devices. . .
That's already developing in Fast Food, soon to become Automated Food.
Consider the "strike" today for fast food workers demanding a "living wage".
It's practically a prospectus for Momentum Machines, and their Automated Burger Machine. . .
Actually, if I wanted to defeat one of these, I'd build an EMP Pulse generator into something innocuous, and fry it from a distance.
Example (although likely too low-powered to disable a MallBot . . ):

You mean our current near-perma-incumbents who don't allow laws to apply to them don't ALREADY feel encumbered ???
