iPod batteries ARE replacible. There are several replacement kits out there, and most of them include tools to do it. Googling iPod battery shows lots of ads. A reputable dealer off the top of my head is Other World Computing, there are a few other reputable dealers.

I really don't think iPods are fragile. I dropped my U2 iPod four feet onto concrete TWICE and it's still working great. I've seen plenty of competitor's products that are broken just from sitting on the display shelves being handled by prospective customers.

I don't think it makes sense to switch to a new arch yet, or even add one. Developers for the Mac platform had had some rocky times, with plenty of them dropping in favor of PC.

I wouldn't want to emulate a program tuned for Gx processors.

Plenty of other Intel chips have potential in the Mac line. Heck, there is an AMD chip or two in the Power Mac G5s. Intel makes flash ROM chips, wireless and wired networking chips, lots of PCI-X stuff (one PCI-X hub chip is in Xserve G5), PCIe chips and so on. Also, Intel has a lot of fab technologies. Apple might possibly get the rights to have Intel fab G5s, if it is true that IBM's fab is having trouble supplying chips in volumes that Apple needs, or fab any other chip for that matter, including custom chips.

So more Intel chips could be in more Macs, and it doesn't have to be the CPU.

Xscale is Intel's ARM offering, used in Palm and Pocket PCs if I recall, which might make a good Newton re-entry or a specialized Tablet Mac, though I'd prefer a PPC chip and keep the ability to run current OS X software.

Many of my purchases were used or refurbished workstations and have been rock-solid reliable despite running Windows.

I bought my mini new, though the PowerMac is refurbed. Generally, the cost of used Macs isn't worth it, refurbs are better deals IMO. I've seen listings for 1GHz G4 iMacs for $800 or so. Sorry, not when I can get a refurbed G5 1.6 or 1.8GHz iMac with the latest OS, a warranty and such for slightly more.

I've read all the docs and specification PDFs that were released when BTX was announced. I still contend that the BTX form factor is unnecessary.

For one, it was designed such to accomodate Intel's excessively power wasteful chips that aren't proving to be worth the power they waste.

For another, most of the changes to accomodate these wasteful chips could have been done as simple tweaks of ATX, call it ATX 3.0. Without having to contend with nearly so much of a change, ATX 3.0 cases could still have housed ATX 2.0 boards. ATX 2.0 case designs would have only needed a few changes to work. Granted, ATX 3 boards might not work so well in ATX 2 cases because the older cases wouldn't have the necessary mount points to take the stress of the extra heatsink weight.

PicoBTX is nice but given the acceptance of the small form factor ATX systems, I don't see how picoBTX is different enough to be more accepted.
