    On another note, PDA's are still pretty touchy most times. They do lock up occasionally, and someone who has never used it could get confused.

    Really? I can't remember the last time my Palm crashed on me. You may be right regarding CE (or PocketPC?) devices, I really don't know.

    I think GPS is going to be necessary. The Japanese number their buildings in the order they are built, not by where they are located relative to some location.

    I don't think that makes sense. Reading and posting to a slashdot article doesn't mean driving traffic to the linked articles. The slashdot articles are the only thing that links to the articles, postings in those threads doesn't necessarily mean more traffic for the linked sites.

    In a way, it is kind of a tax dodge. I think it is funny, especially when a lot of people buy DSL service (over a phone line), get phone service (VoIP) and basically get the same service with a phone number, 911, voice mail, caller ID, but is not taxable or regulated as a phone service.

    When you use a computer, you turn your mind on. When you watch TV, you turn your mind off. They two worlds are not compatible.

    Horse Hockey. I don't think Jobs has seen people use computers, maybe he hasn't used the Internet? For the most part, brain-dead TV watchers become become brain-dead computer users.

    A iTunes-like video store equivalent probably wouldn't work unless broadband is rolled out wider and faster. I know I wouldn't tolerate a one hour download to watch a half-hour show.

    Apple systems seem to hold their value too well, I don't think you want to know what that gets you.

    I would be wary of this rumor. It may be true, but the iPod mini was rumored to be as low as $99.

    If I can get a G5 based brick for $600 or so, I might consider it though, that's the difference between an iMac G5 and an Apple monitor of the same size.

    The X-bit article body says Netherlands, but the title says Holland. Holland is a sub-region of Netherlands. Maybe it really doesn't matter all that much to me, but there is a difference, and some people get picky about what their country is called, and this is a common mistake for Americans to make.

    All desktops, no, I doubt it, the average lifecycle is maybe three or so years and many 32 bit systems are still being sold, 64 bit is still an exception.

    But if you mean all new desktops, I can definitely see this happening.

    Not saying that it would be, but if left on continuously, a desktop consuming 50W total at idle would cost about $26 a year to operate. A desktop operating with a 200W idle power would cost about $105 a year to operate, a difference of about $79 a year.

    Really, most of the benefit in a desktop system would be in smaller, cooler and quieter operation.

    Reductions in air conditioning needs actually far outweigh reductions in power.

    The energy cost of cooling is usually less than the energy cost of making heat. Usually it is about 10:1 on a decent A/C system, it takes 10W of electrical power to remove 100W of heat.

    It ashould be completely adjustable. If you pick the most battery conserving mode, it probably wouldn't up the clock for the instantaneous bursts of CPU power needed for many tasks. If you were so inclined, you could set it for maximum clock even without the power cord, but usually somewhere inbetween is good for most people.

    For Windows XP, a utility called sswitchxp (short for speed step switch XP) allows the user to tweak a lot of these modes. I can't say much about Linux, I don't use Linux on my laptop.

    I was positively surprised, P4M excels in this area.

    It is not P4M. Aside from the FSB and the latest SSE version, Pentium M is not even remotely based on the Pentium 4 core.

    If you really looked, you'd find that the newest one comes in 533MHz FSB.

    I really don't know what operations require 800MHz and up for best performance (I/O intensive vs. compute intensive), but if East Fork is a reality, I bet that faster FSB speeds are in the works for a desktop version. The lower FSB was intended to minimize power consumption, which is a major priority on power sensitive laptops, but even if a higher bus speed means a couple extra watts, I doubt it would make a difference even in the fanless systems.

    No, there is more to it than that. The source being open doesn't mean you can modify it, and the software being free doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with it.

    There is a distinction between free as in cost, and as in freedom.

    The stigma really isn't so bad anymore, as another poster pointed out, there are emissions concerns with diesel, with nitrates, sulfates and particulates. I like the tech, but the environmental reasons do have merit.

    Except that Intel has already sold more x86 64bit processors than AMD.

    I am well aware that Intel still probably sells 4x as many CPUs as AMD does, but where did you get this?

    Sure, IIRC, Opteron's sales are just a small multiple of Itanium, but at least they can exploit the common die with Athlon64 (like Xeon relies on the same basic die), Itanium cannot.

    I agree with the grandparent post. Don't count your chickens before they hatch. You believe that someone owes you an undeserved $1M, but in reality, if the money wasn't yours, you can't count it as losses

    In terms of money, you can't lose what you don't have. These losses are only imaginary and calculated in such a way to overlystate these imaginary losses.

    This is somewhat like the budget cuts politicians use. For example, politicians raise the projected budget next year by 8% from this year (when only 2% is necessary), reduce it by 4% and claim they've cut the budget when spending is still rising excessively, while letting people believe that actual spending has gone down.

    While there is a lot of potential in iPods and similar devices, many of these potential uses seem to be far from optimal.

    I'm not sure why I'd read USENET postings on anything, much less an iPod. The thing was designed for music, for many people, their entire collections, thus it wasn't designed for handling a lot of text. I have a Palm too and I find it a chore to read on that too, despite having a much larger screen.

    IIRC, Pentium was always just a brand name.

    Pentium Pro, II, III and M are all basically sixth generation IA32, they have more or less the same core architecture.

    I would suggest Pentium IV to be seventh generation. because of Netburst. It had its place but also had its drawbacks.

    AMD's K series seemed to be about a number high for a while, this is because of AMD's lackluster K5, which they had to buy Nexgen to compete, starting with K6 I think. K5 really didn't compare well with Pentium, K6 didn't compare well with the 6th generation IA series but rather the 5th generation. K7 compares well with the 6th generation. K8 looks to be the king of the x86 hill for the moment in terms of overall performance.

    Is Linux even PIC developer friendly? Last I checked, the PIC software on Linux made the laughable Windows software look very good, and the Windows software always supported all the available PIC chips.

    I know some wiseguy could suggest that I could have written my own, but I needed to make money first. Pragmatism is a priority over ideology for me.

    Quite right. With a 2Gbps Fibrechannel link, that is about 111 hours, assuming link speed == data payload transfer speed.
