SF tends to use science in at least two (probably more) ways to explore the human condition.
One way explores modern issues in a different, usually future, setting to gain perspective. Star Trek did it with race and political issues. It is a good way to get some objectivity.
The second is to propose a technological change and explore what that might mean for humanity. This tends to be what Stross does, and does quite well in my opinion. It is a great way to explore the essentials of what it means to be human by thinking about how both individuals and societies might respond to changes.
I'd say both have their place, but I would think that the second way would be of more interest to science/tech geeks.
I'll never want to visit the South without my own personal surgeon.
Don't worry. From what I've seen in Atlanta, we seem to be importing them. I don't think I've had a doctor with a Southern accent since the Reagan administration.
You're assuming that patch for both systems is released at the same time which may not be the case.
One of the questions for comparing Linux and Windows security should be: "What is the average time between when a security exploit is known and when a patch is available?"
The US is the land of instant gratification. We want to know, and we want to know now. I agree, it could be bad for elections, but I don't think its going to be stopped.
While Bush has made mistakes (Iraq), there is no reason to suspect that he will repeat them.
I've heard similar statements to this several times. I simply don't understand it. There is every reason to think that he will repeat his mistakes. He is the same person elected four years ago, and I haven't seen any indication that he would do things any differently given the same situation.
>Spam is caused by sociopaths that want something for nothing
Your proving his point. If the resources to send spam, or the customers who read it, were scarce then they wouldn't be able to get something for nothing.
>alienating potential customers is never "good business practice."
Look at the products they are selling. Spammers aren't "alienating potential customers". They are alienating people who wouldn't have bought the products to begin with. My wife and my mother wouldn't have bought Viagra or a penis pump anyway.
It has been a long time since I watched the movie, but I did recently finish reading the book. What it came down to was that Dave listened to a lot of classical music because he was bored. *shrug* This might not change anything because I don't remember when the music plays in the movie.
I am using Plesk's Control Panel and its not bad. It a completely simple interface for setting up email accounts, web users, etc... I would prefer shell access, but oh well...
Yep, I've seen it and own a copy. Ok, well I saw it drunk after a sci-fi con, but still I've seen it. Damn that punch was good and the screwdrivers too...oh yeah the video.....it was just bad. I love star wars but this was just bad. I'm just glad I passed out from all the alcohol....
oh well. back to myth2 for linux and xbill, just can't play that enough. makes me feel better after having to work on windows NT (neanderthal technology) all day.

AT&T ... they aren't keeping a database of my URL lookups7.
Until the NSA asks them to. Let's not pretend that AT&T isn't evil.
Just run apt-get update && apt-get install acpi-support.
What? apt-get it yourself.
sudo apt-get update && apt-get install acpi-support.
Okay.
SBC already merged with AT&T. It is this AT&T that is now offering concessions to get the merger with BellSouth to go through.
Great timing. I'm reading Neuromancer again for the nth time.

Damn Grammar Nazi.
Or is that Dr. Grammar Nazi?
Do you think a terrorist group would rather say "We dirty bombed the Americans" or "We NUKED the Americans!!!"

Not at least until the private sector comes up with a vehicle that is capable of what the shuttle accomplished.
Which was... what? Not live up to the plans for it?

No Amidala?!?!? Blasphemy!!!
C'mon...she is worth keeping for any edition. Hell, she's worth dealing with Jar Jar...er..well...maybe.

At least you don't have to piss in a cup anymore.
I must be missing somthing. What is the difference between hearing free (as in beer) music via the radio and hearing free music via mp3s?
It seems that we have always been able to hear music for free. What is the difference now?

Its all about the standards. Maybe they shouldn't be called that--since nobody treats them as such.
/. was only viewable from linux...hey maybe thats an idea. just kidding.
Any thing used on the web should be open source. That's the only way it will work.
Although...If
