This is the problem with the press. Dean Kamen gets credit for "inventing" the Segway and other items, but, like Edison, he had an army of engineers actually designing and solving the problems in the thing. Since all those folks were in his employ, his name goes on the patents, not theirs. He's more of a manager and financier than an inventor. The stupid press wants to say Kamen invented it because naming one person perpetuates the myth of the mad genius inventor toiling away day and night in a garage or basement, which is how stupid people think invention is done.
If you consider the panic and chaos that would ensue from an announcement of an extinction level event, yeah, it is probably better for them to say nothing or lie about it. Seriously, what would people do if there were a credible statement that the world would end on Feb 15th? A lot of people would take it as a license to do anything they please to anyone they choose.
I would prefer to live out my last days peacefully, oblivious of impending doom.
You're forgetting the software compatibility issue- THAT is what has kept MS on top for so long in spite of security and other issues, and it's why MS changes file formats every couple years. You want to be able to access MS Office files? You gotta pay MS for the OS and the Office "upgrades". MS has a lot of momentum that isn't going to disappear over night.
It's a little hard to believe that the company that has kept the worst browser in existence alive through 10 generations of crap is ready to throw in the towel on Win 8 only a few months after its release.
They'll just have to do what they've done in the past- load Win 7 up with so many "updates" that break it, or cause reboots every 20 minutes, that people will switch to Win 8 in desperation.
The H1B visa only allows a foreigner to work in the US for the company that sponsors their visa, therefore, H1B visa slaves must accept any working conditions and pay that they are given. If they don't like the work situation their only choice is to go back to where they came from.
is further destruction of the middle class. By replacing American tech workers with H1B slaves, they drive down the wages of the Americans who still have jobs.
Once the rich have taken everything away from the middle, they'll have to turn on each other. That will be fun to watch.
The NRA is quick to jump up and say "don't ban the gun. Prevent people with mental problems from getting them", but they also say "if you take away people's guns, only criminals will have them." So which is it? You CAN control who gets guns or you CAN'T? Do you think someone who is suffering mental problems is going to have any more trouble getting guns than a criminal?
Since, as the NRA says, you can't control who gets guns, you have to eliminate the guns.
A couple of my coworkers came to work sick over the last two weeks. I asked them why they come to work when they are sick- they are dentists at a public heath clinic, and should now better, but they come to work any way. Their response: they feel like they have to be there. Starting their own mini epidemic among patients and coworkers...
Maybe the problem is that unused sick time can be rolled into vacation time.
Auto vs gun deaths: automobiles are used by so many people, so much more than guns, to do so much that is beneficial, it is to be expected that there will be some number of fatalities, possibly even higher than gun related deaths. If you calculated the number of deaths per hour of operation -i.e. the RATE, you'd probably find that the rate of gun deaths is MUCH higher than the rate of auto related deaths. Considering the fact that cars are designed to move people safely from one place to another and that hand guns are specifically designed to kill people, as are many rifles, you would expect that the RATE of death is much higher for guns, or they'd have to be pretty poorly designed tools.
Hammers and clubs vs rifles: How many cases of multiple deaths are caused by hammers or clubs vs multiple deaths by rifle shot? Are there any incidents of a hammer being used to kill more than 1 or 2 people at a time? Hammers have an intended use other than killing people. Rifles, not so much, while hand guns have virtually no use other than shooting people.
If you're going to compare things, you have to compare them in a sensible way.
"Society works best when all types of power are distributed and not concentrated in just a few areas or restricted to just a few people or groups."
Can you cite and references to support this claim? More specifically, can you cite any references that would indicate that this is true of gun ownership? What I see on the news every day tells me that easy access to guns has done the opposite in the US.
"...and I sure don't support laws that say only the military and police can have the most powerful weapons. That puts the balance of power away from the people."
The military has nukes. Are you suggesting that private citizens be allowed to own nukes in order to balance the power against the government?
a stupid decision and what rock have they been living under that they have no personal knowledge of Windows and its shortcomings? Why would anyone with ANY windows experience think that it would be a good idea for our military to be using it?
We deserve the government we get because we are stupid and vote for idiots.
California has been playing this game for so long their public schools have turned to crap because there's no tax money to pay for them. Every time a state cuts a corporate welfare deal or tax break someone else gets screwed, usually kids and/or the poor.
Including a stereo in every car killed the theft. Once everyone had stereo in their car, there was no one who needed to buy stolen units.
I'll never understand the appeal of iPhones. My wife had one (a 3GS) for three years on AT&T. It didn't work for phone calls most of the time, and data was so slow it was almost useless. She recently changed to Verizon and got an iPhone 5. Doh! The iPhone 5 can't understand her speech input (she has a slight Japanese accent), when she got it google maps was gone and the Apple maps thing was crap. Every time she called me with the 3GS (when it worked), there was about a 3 or 4 second delay before my audio would get through to her. I'd answer, say hello, and wait, and wait, and wait, until eventually she'd hear me and start talking. I'm not sure if the 5 has the same problem.
What is it about iPhones that keeps people buying them even when they have so many problems? It's as if Apple keeps sending out alpha or beta test stuff and people happily pay through the nose to find out what works and what doesn't this time around.

Cell phone carriers or cable TV companies.

I believe it was Ricky Bobby's dad who said it best: "If you're not first, you're last."
Going from 25th to 10th at anything is nothing to brag about.
A: acceptable
B: bad
C: crap
D: don't come home with one of these
F: you are a f**kin idiot

Somehow I just KNEW it had to be an iPhone problem.
Pffft!
If the right person's phone has gone missing they do.
"Or does our government and the electorate who put them there have a right to know what's really going on?'"
Last time I looked the electorate was the oil companies and they know exactly what is going on.
Nothing to see here, even less to "invest" in.
Gus Fring's chicken farm.
Meh, and double meh.

Doh!
He had no choice as in someone put a gun to his head and told him to start DLing or die? That's hard to believe.

corporate welfare to me, the cost of which is borne by the tax payers.
If the business can't generate enough cash flow to pay the liability insurance bill, maybe the business shouldn't exist.
