    When I was a graduate student at Yale my advisor was a dude by the name of John Fenn. Very energetic and not at all ready to retire at 70. However he was forced into retirement and smaller lab spaces because of ageist university policies. At 70 or so he completed work on a GC-MS technique that won him a share of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

    That technique was key to the development of protease inhibitors.

    In my previous job I had customers who were deathly afraid of GPL to the point where they would not allow me as their supplier to use any open source code in the products I supplied regardless of what the license was or if it saved money.

    For these people anyway GPL was a real impediment to the acceptance of open source.

    HMS Sheffield - not a carrier
    HMS Coventry - not a carrier
    HMS Ardent - not a carrier
    HMS Antelope - not a carrier
    MV Atlantic Conveyer - not even a warship

    Basically these were ships operating in reach of shore airbases without proper air defenses. Something a carrier is unlikely to do.

    600 gallons over the state of Texas is an absolutely trivial amount of napthalene considering the volumes of other sources of this material.

    US consumption of napthalenes in just the form of pthalic anhydrides and naptalene sulfonate is on the order of 200 million pounds per year. 600 gallons is about 4000 pounds.

    And this doesn't count the legions of other sources of this class of materials.

    Ludicrous.

    Lead and napthalene are present in everything including mother's milk and rainwater as minor ingredients.

    It really IS necessary to look at what the actual concentrations are rather than just spouting off 'oh my it contains xyz which is toxic.'

    Otherwise you are just spouting nonsense.

    I agree that the shows that you are citing are undiluted crap. However in the context of current TV where there are hundreds of channels of alternatives many of which are not anywhere as bad, plus the availability of the internet do a great deal to ameliorate the situation.

    Imagine a time where there was no internet and there were ONLY three channels, all belonging to the national networks.

    Basically the value of a share of stock is determined from a discounted cash flow analysis of future earnings of the company in question. Since this analysis includes an estimate of the growth of the company any change in the growth outlook must then in fact affect the value of the stock.

    1989 Camry LE ECU failure - relay contacts would weld shut damaging the door solenoids. There were no cases where all 4 solenoids failed and the windows were still functional.

    There was a recall in 1992 for this.

    I am 60 years old so I grew up in the era of there being only 3 TV channels and a educational TV station showing classroom style programming. The message of consumerism was far stronger and less diluted then than it is now.

    This was far less diverse than what is available today, and yet when the time came we were ready to rise up in protest.

    I really don't see an issue with the media today. The breath of opinion and education available is staggering in comparison to what is was.

    Many trades require licensing IF the person involved is going to offer their services to the general public.

    Licensing provisions do not apply anywhere as often if the person is going to practice the trade as an employee.
