Brain cancer? Do you have references on this? I used to work occasionally in a vinyl chloride manufacturing facility, and was aware of cases of angiosarcoma of the liver, a rare form of liver cancer that was believed to be the result of exposure to vinyl chloride. I have never heard of vinyl chloride being linked to brain cancer.

I think that the number of class A chemical carcinogens, non-radiactive, non-biological substances (like vinyl chloride) that are accepted to be actual causitive agents for human cancers is quite small, perhaps 10.

My bet is that the cancers were caused by a biological agent, possibly viral. There are many known carcinogenic virii, and probably a lot more unknown.

Cancers due to ionizing radiation exposure are known to follow a linear model. So in this case the equivalence of a high dose for a short period vs. a low dose for a long time is pretty likely.

As far as SAR equivalence, remember that with a cell phone you are holding the transmitter right up against your skull. Even though the tower might be emitting a lot more radiation, it is also a lot further away.

Text as images has so many problems that there is no excuse for it. Anyone with any kind of disability has problems with it, the images are far slower to download, and making the text dynamic is nearly impossible.

The main culprit as far as I have seen is people working as web designers who started as print designers. They are used to having their design rendered exactly as they envisioned it, but that is not how html works so they try to force it to the detriment of all concrned.

Font size is the easiest thing there is for the end user to adjust to their preference if the page is designed correctly. My eyes are not at all good, but a couple of taps on ctrl+ made this page quite easy to view.

What REALLY ticks me off about working with some designers is when they want to place text on a page in the form of images so they can force the user to look at the design exactly the way they want it shown.

The reason to build your own PC is choice, not about saving money - you get to pick each and every component that goes into the machine, and you end up with exactly the machine you want, rather than having to select from a limited list of options. The result is a machine that meets your needs much more closely than a pre-built machine, and that translates to a machine that is a great value.

You can think of the process of communicating between the two parts of the system in terms of connection overhead, and data passing overhead. In most cases the process of communicating between two subsystems becomes inefficient when there are a lot of small messages rather than a smaller number of large messages. This is where I think a lot of the problems with microkernel architecture lie - insufficient attention to the connection overhead part of the process.
