it was just an example, I'm not very imaginative :P. The real point I was trying to prove was that something like that holding a user back from switching an operating system no longer would hold them back from switching. The problem with that is that most people are using windows 90% of applications run on windows, people are used to it and don't need to switch. But if vista comes out and people are no longer used to it and someone says he linux is free easy and you can run simular apps between both platforms it becomes something of a decision where 3 years ago it wasn't. I don't think the majority of users will switch but I do think that users might consider it where they wouldn't have before. The point I'm making is that if bandwidth keeps increasing web services keep increasing, a computer will just be a gateway to their apps and files on the internet, leavingn the OS as just a way to get online(for most users I doubt that this would be for companies that don't want to put files on the internet).

But I hope you can see the the benifits of this type of system in the eyes of the people that are investing in it. Even though we know that it most likely won't be benifitial until it meets a more productive requirement of most users.

  3. Re:Is this new? on Challenging Microsoft on the Desktop · · Score: 2, Interesting

The reason its a threat to microsoft is that the applications are becomming web based(or multiplatform) and less OS dependent. Where 3 years ago you had to have the OS that the software was made for its now run on a server where the software is run on. So say word was web based you would be able to use word in OSX, Linux, Unix, Windows. This means big problems for Windows as an operating system if it caught on. I really doubt it would change the industry over night, but I can see why someone would be saying it might.

  4. Dell was probably working on it long ago. on Dell Battery Recall- Win for the Web · · Score: 1

on June 29th 2006 Dell said that they were looking into the burning laptop(according to engadget). This was most likely not because the web told them to. Then about 20 days later on July 18th I believe Dell was no longer selling the batteries. the time in between was probably in prep for a full recall and the time before that was probably going through sony and legal. First you have to get the stock in to cover over 4 million computers as well as sustain your current stock(your not wanting to shut down production because your using your current battery supply to replace bad ones). Then you have to setup the proceedure for the return and then setup the website and setup a call center or train your current ones to take the calls. Then you have to setup PR and all that before you let it go into the wild. This is most likely a long process going through lawyers and making sure you talk to sony which would also be a delay. I'm sure that Dell had this thought out long before the engadget and other sites jumped on it. I think they might have hurried the processes along a little more, but I don't think that would fit into their plan of attack on the issue.

I built my first computer about 4 years ago for my parents using an ECS board, at the time people on the review site said it was a decent board for a great price, I bought its and the thing is still working wonderfully, 3 years ago I bought one for myself, this time the reviews showed that the ECS boards were crap and that if you got a working one you should kiss the ground and clap your hands. Mines worked wonderfully for me, I'm about the replace the whole system(I've upgraded the cpu and ram since then but its getting old) and I don't think I would touch ECS again, I bought 3 boards for friends of mine. 2 of the three had to be taken back the next day because a slot wouldn't work or an on board componant like built in lan wouldn't work. And out of the three boards I think all had to be scraped after the warrenty. They were horrible. It was a nice board to have when it came out , had a 1.1 ghz duron in it, then upgraded to my current 2200+ XP processor.

Anyways now that I've trailed off topic long enough to get modded down, I do have to say something, I can see that laptops are picking up alot of steam. You can take them anywhere you can run almost anything on them even some with doom 3 if you want to spend the cash at a place like alien ware. They have wireless capabilities and with Hotels, Coffee shops and Air Ports sporting wireless services more and more as a standard feature to get people to come in it seems logical that people would want to take advantage of it. I mean I used to have an old 386 laptop(it was fun to play old BBS style game on and have people laugh at how bulky it was and the fact it had no battery) that couldn't be taken anywhere, no chance for upgrades and it ran even slower than a 286 at points. The advancement of laptops seems to have been a little slower, and now its gaining momentum. People want a computer with them when the are out of town, they don't want to use someone elses system that might be compromised or just not setup how they like.

I think that in the future people will end up having laptops and desktops will be confined to the small areas of server rooms and hard core gamers(if the console market doesn't stop that soon)

This I think would work better than searching the universe for signals. Sending some kind of ultra signal to different galaxies seems to be more likely to get a response to me.

The law as it stands in canada is that downloading music is okay so those people are not being sued. But people uploading music are doing something illegal by Canadian law. The CRIA if you were paying attention tried to change this at the begining of the year but as there was a levy and a previouse bill passed allowing the levy to cover the charge of downloading music, it was made legal so they CRIA could only going after the uploaders. So you could download all the music you wanted and take advantage of the CD levy(I can't remember but I do know at one time it only applied to certain types of recordable media such as blank tapes and cd-r's)

anyways my point is that I don't understand illegally playing it. If you can't make an illegal copy how could you illegaly play it in the first place. The thing I guess I don't like about these new programs where you download music online and now movies is that when it comes down to it I want to make copies to watch on other computers other devices and such that is still legal to do. i don't think it really matters in this case because penny-arcade is not going to profit from this comic. They get money for people who want to see over easy and want a free toy who join a special club or people who click on the banner not from people clicking on the comic. I agree. Look at the guys over at Penny-Arcade.com I think they have all their consoles modded but none of there games are pirated. They get some imported before they are released in the US and then some times buy them again. This is not illegal in my books though the DMCA makes it so that it is. There are also some games that are only released in Japan(remember FF for nintendo that wasn't released in US/Canada) people still want to play these games. Note that the guy from isonews.com was advertising to the pirating community because of the nature of the website. But that does not mean that all mod chips(playstation included) are not used for pirating so they should be a little less cranky about it.

It is quite possible because your not deliberatly sending files with these new p2p programs out there.

Also you might say(I thought you had when I first read your commment) that the person is making it advailable on the internet by ripping them. But you can't tell who's ripping them.

In the end its the p2p program that is finding the files off your computer to send. your not the one sending them so you are not the one that is shipping out illigal songs on purpose.

Now I only read the cnn artical and it didn't say how they knew he sent 600 songs(or in the cnn artical downloaded). Are they spying on everyone? this almost worries me as much as them wanting to know who this guy is.

well actually looking at the sun through a telescope would probably blind you. That is how Galileo eventually became blind because he was observing sun spots(not a good idea), but when you look at the total eclipse its not going to kill you. Here is an exert from one of my text books:

"If you are fortunate enough to see a solar eclipse, keep in mind that the only time when it is safe to look at the Sun is during totality, when the solar disk is blocked by the Moon and only the solar corona is visible. Viewing this magnificent spectacle cannot harm you in any way. But you must never look directly at the Sun when even a portion of its intensely brilliant disk is exposed. If you look directly at the Sun at any time without a special filter approved for solar viewing, you will suffer permanent eye damage or blindness."

Also I remember watching a video of people going to watch an eclipse. They brought big powerful telescopes to use. When totality occurred I think they took off their filters and watched it though I might be wrong. Especially when you think that looking at a full Moon will have enough light reflected from the Sun to cause damage to your eyes, so I'm probably wrong about the unfiltered telescopes.
