When I start thinking about the data sent to things like my monitor and speakers, I'd think you'd quickly run into bandwidth issues.

The summary makes the point that Apple have managed to solve this problem by building the monitor and speakers into the computer. They even have the airport express solution if you want wireless hi-fi sound.

The monster laptops that are being produced are testament to this: some people don't care about ultimate portability, they just like the monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse and (temporary) power supply to be build into the computer, which avoids lots of wires.

  3. Resolution independent toolkits and window manager on Fedora's OpenGL Composite Desktop · · Score: 1

If the open source desktops want to really steal a march on the Mac and Windows platforms we should design and build an entirely resolution independent environment.

If all UI elements were made from vector graphics you would just be able to set a level of 'zoom' on your display and choose to balance the amount of information on the screen with the sharpness of it's rendering.

Being able to dynamically change the level of zoom and manipulate relative window sizes would have the potential to make Mac OS X look like Windows 3.1.

Why have zoom tools in the applications when it could be in the OS and for every application?

Lister: Well, you just move your head closer to the object.
Kryten: I see. Move your head ... closer, hmm, to the object. All right, okay. Well, what about other optical effects, like split screen, slow motion, Quantel(tm)?

I look at the current price advantages of VOIP as merely an insentive that will speed up uptake.

The real advantage, from my perspective, of VOIP is the flexable nature of the network and the new sorts of phone systems that can be set up. Systems that are functionally equivalent to todays office switchboards can be deployed over distributed locations and you can control all of the routing directly using your own server. There's no need to ask the phone company to add another extention. This is, of course, just one example.

Yes, prices will go up, but we will be able to get a more sophisticated service for the same cost.

Some things I can't say were related to these displays... There were at least 3 (nda) sessions I attended where I kept thinking mentally. "It's about time. I wonder if the 30" displays made the engineering teams decide to finally add this to Mac OS X". The Mac has always said that they have a well engineered foundation for graphics, but I think making these displays a reality will be a nice impetus for getting some of those ideas out of the realm of theory and into reality as well :-)

These displays are a great thing that will benefit Mac users even if you don't have a 30" display.

I'm guessing that you're talking about resolution independant graphics for GUI elements - Menu bars, buttons, scroll bars... perhaps even icons.

I'm only guessing this because I was bitching to a coworker yesterday that this is a feature that Windows and Mac OS X should have had from the beginning. If I'm right, it's the start of a new age in GUI technology... And it will allow Apple to use super hi-res displays on their laptops without making the OS look stupid (something Sony and Dell don't seem to mind)

  13. I've got one on Apple Starts Logic Board Repair Program · · Score: 4, Interesting

I've got a 700MHz iBook which started demonstrating the problems when it was 2 months over it's 1 year standard cover. I cursed myself for not extending the applecare and had to buy an eMac in order to get working again.

At this stage I had no idea that it was a common problem - I simply counted it as bad luck.

I was aware the problem could be temporarily aleviated by squeezing on certain parts of the case so I diagnosed it as a loose connection or something shorting out. With nothing to loose I took the whole thing apart and started experimenting with putting presure on the logic board at different places.

I discovered that placing a bit of cork to keep the graphics chip in place I could get the machine to be as solid as a rock. I'm writing from it now - it's just the logic board screwed to a bit of wood with the screen standing in an easel. It's been on and working since Christmas with no crashes. I only need to restart for security patches.

What I've done would have voided my warranty - but I didn't have one any more when I started taking it apart. The wording on Apple's page seems to imply this has nothing to do with the warranty anyway.

I feel that I am due some sort of compensation from Apple but I don't really know how to approach them. Should I ask for a new logic board? A new iBook? Cash? It is their fault that I had to butcher my iBook - so I feel justified that I am due something.

What do you guys think I should do?
