not going to happen unless that kiddie is well versed in spoofing the source of the rom. for most cable and dsl providers, they send the rom's down to the modem on the initial handshake, and it is from a specific source (server). in order to deliver a dummy rom, that server must be spoofed. (man in the middle attack). SO, that said, the likelihood of a mass DoS attack is slim. it may be POSSIBLE, just not likely.

  4. no tradecrafts? skill trees? character dev. ?! on Metaverse Launched? · · Score: 0

one element that is normally present in an MMORPG, and which is EXTREMELY popular, is the ability to not just be "somebody" else, but also to be "something" else.

The article touches on the ability to "create" content, and also mentions that only humans and pets will be present. ok, fine.

But what about DEVELOPING your avatar? will changing hoverboard colors and clothing styles be enough "growth" for long periods of real time? Or will people simply get bored with it and return to pure text-chat hell?...

Im not suggesting that There (btw - i hate the name. using "There" in a sentence as a Proper Noun is ANNOYING!) center the entire idea around skills trees and character growth, but it WOULD attract more folks. The Wal-mart Mom's wont be enough to support the business, so gamers and such need SOMETHING more added to be drawn in.

Example: In EQ, when i DO actually go on to "just chat", it's MUCH more rewarding and justifiable to me when i sit there Fletching (creating bows and arrows for those of you who have a life...) while i chat. I get a RETURN on my investment of TIME, which keeps me online longer... I am also REWARDED for spending more time online.

This is perhaps the #1 issue and is constantly being discussed by developers of MMORPG's... they know they need to REWARD the user in some way for their investment. They need to give players a sense of accomplishment. SOMETHING TO STRIVE FOR!

In THERE (uhg!), it will simply get flat and boring... and if i wanted that kind of boredom, id just download IM... new emoticons? woohoo! lol..uhg.

"I find it disturbing that people accept and praise the idea of "Virutal" relationships, "Virtual" friends, and a "Virtual" life. I find it sick that people consider this online funeral "a great showing of compassion" If that were the case they should have sprang a few hundred bucks (or pooled their money so those players that couldn't afford it), flew out to the REAL funeral and made a REAL heart to honor a REAL friend. When a friend of mine from UO died I popped $450 for the plane ticket and wen't to the the funeral. REAL PEOPLE DESERVE A REAL FUNERAL AND IF YOU ARE A REAL FRIEND YOU BETTER DO SOMETHING REAL. Here is the problem, if you identify that these VIRTUAL lives you live have value you open a can of worms the like that has never been seen. If these VIRTUAL activities are EQUAL to real activities in merit and value and you hold them as EQUAL then don't be suprised if someone charges you with VIRTUAL theft, infidelity, emotinal damages, or murder. I refuse to honor such a foolish act. It is no better than those who "wept" and "sobbed" when JFK Jr. died. Sorry YOU NEVER MET HIM AND MOURNING HIM WITH SUCH A PATHETIC DISPLAY ONLY DIMINISHED THE "REAL" GRIEF OF THE FAMILY. Has society slipped to far that the the lines between reality and fiction have slipped so far? If he was a "REAL" friend you should have done something "REAL" to honor him. Next thing you'll be doing is emailing bad news like ,"Sorry Mrs. Doe, your husband died during the sugery. :( ""
