Now we have an internet built around open standards, and with HTML5, the services we use will be less dependent on the use of any particular company's platform. I think Ballmer's use of the term "devices and services" is an accurate description of where everybody's head is at now. If I just want to use a computer for light work and communications, who cares whose platform I use? I went back and read Negroponte's "Being Digital" recently to see what was in it. I am going to start doing this more because I'm amused by tech prognostication and guruism. One comment in there stayed with me, however, to the effect of , one company can leverage a proprietary technology or standard for a while, but sooner or later, open standards catch up with them. In 2000 I was using IE to use the web. Now there is a range of browsers, iOS, and Android, and they all seem to function well enough or better for most peoples needs.
Unfortunately the AI also lied that it had completed its arithmetic assignment so that it could go out to recess early. It is also suspected of taking an extra snack at snack time, and caused a disturbance during nap time.
Next they will contact the Harvard astrophysicist who asserted that all the gold on earth was formed from 2 dead stars colliding. Imagine how wealthy they could become, we could return to the gold standard.
Not that I'm promoting it as effective virus protection, but MSE has a light effect on my Windows partition. Seldom using Windows, but I surf on it ocassionally. Don't know if MS will continue to support it after XP dies, but looking at my parents computer and the 4 websites they visit, I really wonder how robust an anti-virus program someone who is elderly actually needs. Good experiment for somebody: use XP with NO virus protection for a month, visit the same websites these people visit, use a modern web browser (not IE 8), and see at the end of that period if you are actually infected.

Since the PC makers have now given early signs of freaking out about the tablet, can we expect more Frankenstein 8 pound, Mac monitor shaped, Frankenstein, 20 inch screen, Frankenstein, detachable flexi-keyboard, Frankenstein, rubberized to protect damage, Frankenstein, Windows 8, Frankenstein computers that cost $1200 and have an appeal to the consumer that Gasohol did in the 1970s as a replacment for Gasoline?
Not a lawyer, but doesn't this go under the banner of "conflict of interest"? If Apple has a strong relationship with this law firm, how does having a lawyer at that firm involved in a patent lawsuit against a company he may have represented in the past effect this? I'm sure this guy has probably thought that aspect of this patent fight through, but isn't that an obvious avenue of attack for Apple?

The writer claims that Amazon's model is unsustainable and equivalent to the Standard Oil play of selling at a loss to drive competitors out of business. In his opinion, Apple should be commended for raising prices by a few dollars per book? What say you Slashdot? What I have trouble determining in this shift from physical media to digital is how the artists are making out in this brave new world.

I think he left out a third category of cheating: cheating that transcends the sport and becomes an object of admiration among fans. The textbook example would be Gaylord Perry. One of the more interesting sports interviews I've heard involved Perry describing his elaborate routines to keep the opposition guessing where he had hidden a gob of vaseline. Apparently there were people on the opposing team whose job it was to watch him during the game and try to catch him cheating. The vaseline, of course, moved from his pant leg, to his cap, to the back of his neck, which he rubbed to loosen up... etc. I agree with a previous post that the economic rewards are too large to stop it, but I admire the author of this article of refusing to take part. It is possible, I think, however, for people to become so accustomed to cheating that they accept some forms of it as part of the game. I read this same kind of analysis for the PS4. Does shifting more to the server side improve/decrease performance? Depends on your internet connection and network? An article I looked at emphasized the speed of the GDDR5 RAM Sony had used, how this indicated a shift towards network gaming. Is this part of the strategy of moving to a constant internet connection?
