  1. 10%=99% on How Does Your ISP Handle Top-Usage Customers? · · Score: 1

I work for a large cable internet provider. I bet you can all guess which one without me saying so.

The top 10% of our internet users use 99% of our bandwidth. We have to draw the line somewhere, since it's those users who can swamp a node so that everyone else connected to that node is trashed. We don't have set bandwidth limits because bandwidth varies between nodes. However, we have so much bandwidth available, any node that goes over 50% capacity is reviewed to see if someone is sucking it or if we need to upgrade the hardware.

Our office may suspend internet, sales may ask them if they want to upgrade to a higher level service, or the business office will call if someone is in the top 10%. You'd have to be in the top 10% or exceed the 50% capacity for a while for anyone to notice, by the way. If you don't want to upgrade then we ask you to cut down so that they're no longer affecting everyone else on the node. These are typically people running servers and/or up/downloading a huge amount (as a side note I talked to a customer last year who told me his server was slashdotted and we gave him a call the same day). If they refuse, and continue to suck all the bandwidth, we shut them off. We'd rather keep the other customers connected to that node happy than alienate one jerkoff who is inconveniencing the customers around him.

You are assuming that the amount of bandwidth available is static in all areas, and it's not. This is the reason why there's no set limit as to how much bandwidth you can or cannot use. The basic idea is, If you start topping the charts in bandwidth, you're sinking your own ship, as well as all the other ships around you.

A few notes about WoW items...

    1. In WoW, you cannot put anything on the ground for someone else to pick up. The only way for players to trade with each other is player to player through the trade window, through the mail, or buying from the action house.
    2. Auctions are not completely anonymous, your name is attached to the aution. I use an alt to post my auctions though, so for the most part it is anonymous, except that Blizzard can still trace the auction back to your account.
    3. All good quality (green and blue) items are bind on equip, and so they cannot be used by one player and then sold to another for them to use. Once you use it, it's bound to you forever, so if you don't want the item anymore, you must destroy/sell to a vendor/disenchant the item.
    4. Many good quality (green and blue) items are bind on pickup, but there are still a lot of items that are bind on equip, and can be sold. For example, 3 pieces of my Druid's Wildheart armor set are bind on equip, but the rest of the set, 5 pieces, are bind on equip. So, I bought the gloves, bracers, and belt on the auction house, but I have to farm for myself the rest of the set.

Blizzard and players are both concerned about farmers and their negative impact on the game economy. From the bannings, I can already see the prices on the auction house are going down on my server. Wildheart gloves for the past month have been going for a completely ludicrus 50 gold, and I bought them at their "normal" price off the auction house 3 days ago at 15 gold.

There is already a mechanism in World of Warcraft for buying and selling in-game items, it's called the Auction House, and there are three of them on each server. One of them is even neutral so that both Alliance and Horde can buy and sell to and from each other.

Outside (in the "real world") auction houses are not necessary, since players can use the in-game AH to keep the in-game economy moving. Outside auction houses do not keep the in-game economy moving. Outside auctions tend to bring people into the economy specifically in order to get real-world money out of it.
