I created an entire social networking site in Perl, called World of Anime, using the Catalyst Web Framework. I'd consider it serious, at least for me, and have been maintaining it for way more than a few weeks.

I've been a subscriber to Vonage for a few years now. Although I am happy with their service, I don't use the phone that much, so SunRocket's package that was something like $9.99/month for 200 minutes was very attractive to me and for the past couple of months I have been meaning to change my service to them. Every week I keep telling myself, "Ok, this week I will move from Vonage to SunRocket", but the procrastinator in me kept putting it off. Now I'm glad I didn't change.

Moral of the story: Procrastination pays off.

  6. NES Max! on What is the Best Console Controller of All Time? · · Score: 1

The NES Max was by far my favorite controller of all time. It was super comfortable. It fit my hands perfectly, the buttons were all in the perfect place (including turbo buttons for A and B), and the cycloid for the thumb made controlling games super easy for me. I used the NES Advantage on several occasions, and never did like it. I didn't like the oversized buttons, and hated controlling games with the joystick (although I grew up on the Atari 2600 joystick, so its not like I had something against joysticks).

I felt so bad when, in 1997, my cat chewed through the cord of my NES Max. The controller was in perfect condition, despite thousands of hours of play (I always wash my hands before playing and never eat sticky snack foods when playing; I see so many controllers where the buttons are all stuck and the controller sticks won't move in certain directions and it really bugs me). Anyway, I was fortunate enough to find a used NES Max at a video game retailer. The controller itself was in bad condition, but I bought it anyway for something like $1.99, opened it up, removed the cord, opened up my NES Max, and replaced the chewed through cord with the one from the used one, put it back together and it was good as new. It still works perfectly as of the last time I hooked up my NES, which was about a year ago. I've played with most controllers on most system since then, and I've never found a controller I love as much as the NES Max.

I just wanted to say that I just bought one of the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrids 2 days ago, and I love it!

Its so much fun to drive. It's almost like a game trying to drive in such a way as to get the best gas mileage out of it. It shows when you are the recharging the battery, when you are using the battery, and to what extent. There is a gauge that constantly shows your current mpg, ranging from 0 - 120. There are also 2 'trip meters' that measure distance travelled, and average mpgs over that range. I plan on using 1 to measure my progress with each tank of gasoline, and 1 as a 'life of the car' gauge. There is also an 'economy mode' which will turn the engine and AC off when you come to a stop, to conserve more gasoline. My weekly trip to the gas station will be a thing of the past now!

By the way, if anyone is considering one of these cars, and has any questions about it, please e-mail me. I will answer as best as I can. You can also check out the excellent Yahoo! Group for the Civic Hybrid here:

I've got to give a big thumbs up for Earthlink tech support.

About a year and a half ago when my brother got his cable modem, I helped him setup a Linux server (Red Hat 6.2) + IP Masquerading for his home network. This was fairly straightforward, and required no tech support help, and has run fine ever since.

Well, this weekend he switched to Earthlink DSL. I wanted to make the switch as easy as possible for him, without having to re-install anything. Unfortunately, I could not get it to work as easily as the cable modem had, and so we called Earthlink tech support. After trying to ask for help without revealing which OS we were using, it was becoming quite obvious we couldn't. The person asked what OS we are using, and we told him Red Hat Linux 6.2 We were expecting to hear something like "We're sorry, that is not supported", but instead he told us we need a PPPoE in order to connect. He then told us about a program called Roaring Penguin, and where to go to download it. He then helped us configure it and get us connected. We were both quite impressed.

I also remember a time about 4 or 5 years ago when I had Earthlink dial-up, and I was using something like Red Hat 5.0 or maybe even 4.x Anyway, it was in the earlier days before establishing an Internet connection in Linux was easy (at least for me), and I was having trouble getting connected (editing ppp scripts and such, all from the CL), so just for fun I decided to give Earthlink tech support a call. To my surprise, the person walked me through the editing of the scripts, and they worked perfectly, and I was connected.

For the longest time, Hero's Quest (which is the original name, and what I still call it) was my favorite game series. The original 16 color part 1, and part 2 were the absolute best. I even met Lori and Corey Cole, the creators of the series, when I was given a tour of the Sierra Headquarters in California sometime around 1992 or 1993, and I got them to autograph my copy of Interaction (or whatever it was called then), right on the page with an article about the VGA remake of HQ1:SYWTBAH. I thought that was the most absolute coolest thing in the world back then. I've still got the magazine, in mint condition.

Anyway, I haven't heard about it lately, but I seem to remember reading a year or so ago that Lori and Corey do want to continue the series, however they have both left Sierra, and Sierra will not give them the rights to continue the series.

Hopefully something will get resolved, and they will be allowed to continue making games in this wonderful series.
