  1. simple fix on Ask Slashdot: Protecting Home Computers From Guests? · · Score: 1

Some routers have guest accounts. Get one of those routers and not allow sharing under the guest account. If you do not have one of those routers, then make sure you have account passwords on all of your computers. This way you do not have to worry about them getting access to your computers. Finally make sure you have a good firewall.

I use mse and malwarebytes for all my security needs on my windows computers. In addition I use housecall for a second opinion. The biggie about mse is once you install, you can forget it. As you go about searching for a free antivirus, be sure to check their features. I have used most of them at one time or another. Watch out for the following issues.

    1. only allowed to install on one computer in a household
    2. popups wanting to sell the paid version
    3. ads in general
    4. have to manually update or scan
    5. heavy resource usage - especially on older computers

Is Michael Dell right??? Right now, if I were going to purchase new equipment for school, I would get a desktop or laptop (most likely a desktop - for home) and a tablet - no cell phone. I would get a tablet that is big enough to read etextbooks and with wifi so I could use skype. I said tablet but I really would get a phablet (something like the galaxy note) where you can take some notes, mark up text in the etextbooks with a stylus, and make phone calls.

That said, again I ask is Michael Dell right, IMO, he was about a year ago. I think he is a little out of date based on what is being announced at CES this week.

I remember years ago I went to a meeting, in my briefcase was an IPAQ, mp3 player, laptop, digital camera, cell phone and a couple other electronic gizmos of the time. Now all I have it my iphone and laptop, I honestly believe pretty soon it will be just a phablet. So Michael Dell watch what you say because just like Bill Gates and his never needing any more than 64k of ram comment, it can come back and haunt you for many, many years.

When my income tax money comes through, I will be purchasing a cheap computer to stream through. This way I could stream everything - no matter the site. I already have a computer on another tv and it paid for itself in 3 months after I had cable turned off. In the meantime, the wii works great but when it is replaced, who knows what will happen to it... I'm just not into gaming anymore. That is the life of a gaming console to me though sometimes I wished I still had the atari 2600 and non-tech games it had.

  16. bad law on Missouri Removes Teacher-Student Social Media Ban · · Score: 1

I am glad the law was overturn. It was an extremely bad one where parent could not be friends with their own kids. The same goes with grand kids, god children, family friends etc. The law was just too broad. The law of unintended consequences was in effect.

As far as the new one where they say let the school decide on policy, that will get interesting, though I think it is better since school policy can make exceptions and is more flexible than a state law.

They don't know the difference between libre and open office. and I can go on. They just pick a distro, install and use it. That is why I do not see how old arguments can put an end to linux desktops. What will end the linux desktop will be the actions of the popular distros,

One of the biggest problems with the linux community was all the different distros. It made things very confusing and if you picked the wrong one to install, it could either be a nightmare or make you a believer. Then came ubuntu. It was doing good and turned a lot of windows users into linux believers until the last update. The last update turned linux into a nightmare for many because of unity. It just plain did not work on a lot of computers. Then there were those who did an upgrade and lost their installed programs because the latest ubuntu decided to change default programs. IMO, when you do an upgrade, you leave the install programs alone and just install the os upgrades. Actions like this is what will turn users off from linux and this is what I believe will kill the linux desktop.

sorry but if I am paying for internet service why should I let others use it for free? Should I also leave my front door open so the homeless could have a place to stay - that would also be considered socially responsible.

then there is my reputation - In my own town there was a recent raid of a former police officers home for child porn. He was innocent, his neighbor, who was using his open network was guilty -and was shot and killed by the police. In the meantime, people are still wondering if the former pollice officer was also guilty and there was some sort of cover up. Why should I take the chance of being embarrassed of being handcuffed, roughed up with all my computers and data phones being confiscated and searched. I may not have anything illegal on my computers but I might have some files I would not want others to see or even know about.

finally if too many open wifis is being taken advantage of, then isps that don't have bandwidth caps may consider it.

That is not to say I would not help a neighbor for a temporary need, especially if she was a blonde or redhead with great..., but I would watch the router logs very carefully for my legal protection.

unfortunately you will not be able to watch it from the beginning. So many early shows have been lost. I started watching Doctor Who with Tom Baker and only seen a few of the earlier Doctors on Netflix. I recently got caught up with watching all the episodes of new series. Personally I found the new series not as entertaining as the old. It is not to say the newer ones are bad, they are actually pretty good in their own way but when compared to the older, they are lacking and much, much darker.

To answer your question, if you were going to try to addict someone with Doctor Who, start with Tom Baker. Once addicted then try to make them hard core by watching the black an white series that's available.
