Up until about '98/'99 I was an avid follower of quite a few news groups, particularly uk.media.tv.sf.startrek. Not anymore - theres more ontopic posts on buliten boards now, as the number of net newbies increases.
Having said that, my dad used to post regularly to several travel newsgroups via deja and later google - mainly because of the lack of decent discussion bars. Now of course he runs his own bar for 17 hours a day in the summer, so doesnt have time.
Most new people dont know about usenet though, and most old timers migrate away, hence dwindling population.
On the other hand, if they have the contact info as part of some hare-brained Javascript mouseover or popup that relies on IE's implementation of Javascript, then I guess you're screwed.
I'd mod you up but i lost my powers after that post.

Slashdot editors once again continue their campaign of censorship. It has come to Egg
Troll's attention that Jamie "Security Through Obscurity" McCarthy has sent a Cease and
Desist order to our beloved Trollaxor for a diary
entry posted on his website that detailed a javascript exploit to Slashcode.
The hypocracy in doing this is incredible. For a site that routinely condems companies that
attempt such heavy-handed tactics shows that Slashdot is almost as morally bankrupt as
VA/Systems soon will be. I would expect such tactics from the Church of Scientology or a
Fortune 500 company. I guess Slashdot has learned: "If you can't beat them, join them!"
Is the imminent collapse of their parent company causing them all this stress? Or maybe its
years of using that substandard open source software. Whatever the case, this is one of the
slimiest things Slashdot has done since the First Troll Post Investigation.
For those wondering the code in question can be found here
Someone writes something in a newspaper, its printed on 1/1/2001. Some 3/3/2002, its 14 months old. Someone buys a copy of the paper off a friend that has kept it, and reads it.
Thats right, write out a letter, stick a stamp on it and mail to your senator with your worries.
Then when you've done that mail your local journalist, your radio station, your dog. If it gets desperate say that you worry your inability to control hardware that you have bought in your own home is extremely dangerous and could allow terroists to gain hold of it - that'll work. Failing that say that without control over your own products, your children will be able to access all sorts of illegal information and get into trouble. Dont bother putting in methdos, politicions dont care about them!
A striking somewhat-related fact: More Americans are killed in abortion clinics every day than were killed in the Twin Towers Attack. Check it out for yourself - it's true.
Oooh look, a troll attached to an otherwise sensible post
A hard drive is not a safe backup medium. Hard drives fail.
Ye the do, hence you back them up. The chances of 2 hard drives failing at the same time are minimal though. You're really irreplacable, important stuff you can put on a CD. Your less important stuff (mp3's, divx etc) can be just copied to the hdd.
Check the backup hdd every couple of weeks (well, when you do a backup). No problem. Keep it in a fire proof case, antistattic bag, soft padding and unplugged. OK an alien spaceship might disintergrate the house, but if you're worried about that....
CD's arent that great either, ever scratch one?
For a small company offsite backups are important too. Look at the USCG data that was lost inthe WTC with an offsite backup apparently in the other tower. If you are paranoid send of the hdd to your mother in arkansas.
For most people a couple of mirrored, removable 100gb drive will protect against lightning strikes, theft, fire and rm -Rf / - need more, then you are sad.
In greece, to run a net cafe, as well as have conform to strict regulations (or send certain "incentives" like 300 euros to the mayor), and pay 75 euros a year per computer. Something to do with online gambling laws.
I have complained nicely before about the crapness of the odeon's website here in the uk not working with konq 2.2.1. Didnt work
Last night I sent a very rude email saying that as I cant find any information about the film, I couldnt go and I'm off to their competitior. No luck there either.
It'd be c-hash. c-pound would be "c£"

This is all excluding spam of course!
I actually went there to find out what time a film started at my local cinema.
Funny thing is it doesnt seem to work in internet explorer either (last time I checked).

www.odeon.co.uk
Guess it only works with cookies. I clicked and the page just reloaded.
Want to help screw stats? Set your company or home proxy server to rewrite the user agent to something other than IE
No, do do it on your companys proxy, tick people off, and they all moan at the discrimatory sites.
the good-old "contact us" generic mailto might be worth a shot.
But if the site doesnt work, how do you get to the contact us page?
Dont google license their engine (which reads word, powerpoint etc?)
Wernet IC's inventerd in the late 40's?
Supposing it could be done, but it would take 5% of the world's GDP for 10 years
How much cash does Bill Gates - thats one man - have?

To make matters extra special, Jamie updated Slashdot's Slashcode, yet didn't release details of this exploit to other sites running Slashcode. Guess its only important for Slashdot to look out for number one!

Does that change the date of publication?
I sent a fax to my MP (Ben Bradshaw, MP for Exeter, UK), using an online service. Got a reply a few days later.
Easy way to disable sleep key: knife under, lift up. A hammer might be too damaging to other keys.
or is karma whoring getting easier?

Anyone seen any bond movie where he sticks a hair over the door to see if was later opened? I guess not. Dibs on patent!
One of the major reasons we need the queen and close (heir to thone etc) family is because of this last ditch veto. Sort of like a safety check.
Of course the added income from tourism pays for at the very least the queen, phillip, charles, harry and will's upkeep.
