I'm sure I can think up some excuse to go to london, only £30 in petrol. I'll be there if there is going to be a protest.
my letter: Dear Mr Ben Bradshaw,
I am extremely worried about the new amendment to the RIPA bill proposed, and due for debate on the 24th of this month. I can appreciate for organisations such as the police to gain access to my private email and data. Ho
wever this amendment is extremely worrying. It allows organisations such as the Post Office, The NHS, Department of transport and the environmental agency, among others. It is not legal for the post office/consignia/royal mail to steam open my letters, even though they have possession of them. Why should they be able to read my private email? I am very concerned about the potential abuse by such a large number of organisations. There is no judicial oversight to use these powers, and with no strict regulations affecting the 24 new departments, the potential for abuse is even higher then that of just the police, HM customs and excise, and the secret service. The original RIP bill threatens to put people in jail, for up to 2 years, if they forget passwords to encrypted email. Aside from being a violation of the most basic human right of being innocent until proven guilty, it also prevents you from telling anyone you are being investigated. The fact that the post office could investigate me if they see I'm investigating using DHL to deliver a parcel, and throw me in jail for 2 years, it shocking to the point of non-belief. All it takes is one corrupt official, or one cash payme
nt to one of thousands of people authorised to use the bill, and any of their 'enemies' could be investigated. I have encrypted many email in my time, and there is no way I can remember the password for each one. In addition one time encryption passwords - or keys - are gaining ground and used in more programs then you might think. You may not even realise that you have sent an encrypted email until agents from the department of the Office of Fair Trading knock on your door. Out of the 24 agencies that stand to gain powers under this amendment, I can not see the need for any of the agencies to have powers. As the bill is meant to combat serious crime (not, for example, doing 80 down the motorway), the co-operation of the secret service or the police is assured. If these agencies go through the proper channel they can investigate. RIPA is very dangerous. Putting it into the hands of departments and competitive organisations increases the number of weak points in the chain. I strongly suggest you use your full powers as an MP to oppose this bill. I am writing a letter to the University of Exeter's weekly newspaper - Exepose, I would appreciate a response so I can tell the students that their MP is working in their best interests. Thank you.
I actively campaigned against blair at the last election, didnt do much good though, we still got Ben Bradshaw in.
The sad part is he has brainwashed many in this country into believing whatever he says. Throw in "peadophile", "terroist" and "train crash" and you have the country begging him to enact more stringent rules.
I was in st ives, at cornwalls biggest new year party or something this year (hardly saying much, cornwall has a population of about 100,000 - spread over a 60mile by 30 mile county).
There were a few thousand people there, and as in most of cornwall I dont get a signal away from the a30, I figured I'd beat the crowds. at 11:55 I rang my parents and kept them on hold (the crowd were about 5 seconds behind the tv countdown too).
Tried ringing my sister at 12:05 and no luck.
plan: stay sober enough to not throw up and be able to think ahead
Well, provided it's not a British Rail train, that it is...
Inded, I have never been on a train that has travelled faster then 70mph over an entire journey. Hence I go by car.
I swore I'd never attempt to go by train again after I left the house for the 5:30 train from Exeter to London on a saturday morning. Got to station, parked car, paid £10 for parking, went to platform.
"CANCELED".
Next train was over 3 hours later, and invovled at least 2 changes - and we didnt have reserved seats there (the tickets were for this train only).
2*£26 tickets, 1*£10 parking, and I'd traveled 3 miles.
Hopped back in car, tore up the empty M5 at 85-90. Stopped for a cup of coffee at a service station (after 4 hours sleep it was essential). £2.
No problems along the M4, didnt stop between taunton service station and leaving the M4. Pulled into a garage, got a street atlas (£5), filled up car (£19). Carried on for a few miles, stopped in hammersmith (free parking) to get a shirt at 9AM.
9:20AM connection I would have caught arrives at paddington 9:40AM: Park next to hyde park. £6.50 for the weekend. Leave bags in car, go around london £20 for petrol on the way back.
£47 via car, £62 via train. Naturally I'm still waiting (since january) for my money back for the tickets, and car park.
Car took 20 minutes longer, including a stop for a shirt.
Even in the UK, where our public transport system is miles better then the U.S apparently, and with ~50p/litre fuel tax, its cheaper, more comfy, and quicker, to travel by car then train. And cars dont get canceled without notifying you when you have bought apex tickets.
having said that, the tube in zone 1 is great. 2 isnt bad either.
Theres many algorithms for finding shortest path, fromsimple bradth first/depth first through steepest ascent hill climbing, to ones that estimate remaining distance, to routing tables, and of course dijiska
Another good thing in Italy is that the older population does not drive. This gets rid of a good percentage of the people who should not be on the road in the first place.
Really? Ever driven the milan ring road at rush hour? 110 MILES per hour plus in the outside lane.
The charge is a bit annoying when you're making a one way trip through from the north to south though:) Better hen tolls though (/me fears the day the imaginativly and confusingly names "M6 Toll" opens in the UK)
I agree, better then france (partly the reason we are going down through germany) Generally intra-EU border checks are pretty infrequent though, from what I've heard and experienced.
err, no? How can WALES be part of ENGLAND? Thats like saying NEW YORK is part of WASHINGTON.
South west england is, IMO, everything south/west of a line connecting bristol and weymouth. Basically Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset. Some people include as far high as cheltman.
Not totally true: some of the big stuff (sex and the city for example sometimes is here only a few week after the US. Some channels are even running subtitled english versions of sitcoms (rare, but notable...)
Indeed, here in the UK we had the end of stargate season 5 a few months before the U.S.:)
But even so dont expect to be able to watch a baseball game on prime time tv. You might also want to look into getting a semi-legal sky system, which carries enlgish programming. You cant get it outside the UK or ireland, well, officially. CNN and MTV broadcast unencrypted on satelites though.
Watch swis motorways too, they charge you (40 euros or pounds, or franks I forget) to drive them They dont have tolls though:). Problem is when you're just passing through north to south for 3 hours, very expensive;)
The dinousaur one was at the K-T Boundry (Cretaceous - Tertiary), end of the mesozoic IIRC. The other big one (trilobites and about 90% of the earth - I think, its been a few years) was this one, and at the start of the mesozoic (Permian - Triassic)
Jobs schmobs, I'd be more worried about things like 1) The massive delay in TV bebtween the US and europe. 6 months plud before it even appears on some channels. Some countries dont have voyager 6 or 7 yet! 2) The language barrier. Can you speak French? 3) Visas (naturally) 4) Internet access - you Will need broadband, you'll go insane with 12 channels of porn (Well, my experience in TV in that part of europe suggests this) 5) Laws - We dont have a DMCA, and Switzerland is usually OK, not even being a UN member I believe. 6) What about your possesions. Moving permanemtly, or for a year? Sell house/car? Ship car over?
Remember theres a lot to think about. If your fiances moving, shes moving, and so are you. Regardless of the job. My parents have just moved from the UK to greece. Nightmare. And those are two EU countries, and it isnt a permement move.
As for the actual job: in the UK theres lots of adverts about for tech jobs in the trade papers, and I know a few graduates that already have a job, as long as they get certain grades.
However in the south west of england especially, advice I've heard is to stick in your job for another 6 months - a year, there should be an upturn from christmas onwards.
Besides you can always take a year off and work on an OSS project;)
I've seen quite a few professionals with SX, including (the only) regional ITV news station I've seen (ITV is a large network in the UK, the commercial version of the BBC in some ways)
Digital Betacam is used much more.
Of course here at our student tv station we use SVHS!!!
at $250 you're still talking more expensive then places like the Hilton, Paddington, London.
Surely it doesnt matter, most cities have some kind of cheap hotels within half hours walk, or a short tube/metro/subway journey. After 5 minutes search I found a double room for $70 near central park. Does it matter if the convention is at the ritz just down the road? how much do taxis cost in new york?
Most conventions I read about are less then $150 for a 3 day bash. I guess some guests are greedier then others.
Doesnt the U.S. have low cost airlines? Out of the holiday season I can fly across europe (to greece) for about $150. Get the right deal and you can fly for about $10-15 each way plus airport taxes (another $20).
or at least near reasonably-priced hotels (like $100/night or less). Pick a city that's an airport hub, and central to the U.S. In short, do this so that the great unemployed can afford to go
So, american unemplyed can afford to fly half way across a continent and stay in a $100 a night hotel?
I thought I was a well off student because I can afford a $60 a night hotel once a term (work hard to afford that at about $300pw in holidays)
I dont know about in america, but in the uk unemplyment benefit is designed to keep you with a roof over your head and food in your belly. And it barely does that. What kind of a pinko lefty place is America when you can blow 2 weeks benifit on a slashdot convention?
When I was a kid I'd come up with wonderful excuses to mss gym, then I went home and played doom. Whats the difference?
I'm sure I can think up some excuse to go to london, only £30 in petrol. I'll be there if there is going to be a protest.

For every MS goof, there is an equal goof in the OS community
I dont pay members of the open source community $500 for a copy of their work. I do pay microsoft. I expect that $500 to buy me what is advertised.

Then they would have to digitally chop out the chopped up people.
Its amazing what CGI can do

Doesnt that annoy heisenberg?
but as he said, you need an insanely high powered "torch", which would destroy what you were measuring (well change it anyway)
I installed a network point in the bathroom ... everything is patched up
Certainly, you wouldnt want a network point there and not have it plugged in - thats pointless.
Seriously though, wireless is the way togo
but wouldn't it be cool to perform some sort of sexual act while sitting in Captain Kirk's chair?
Most slashdot readers would think it would be cool to perform some sort of sexual act Full Stop.
but doesn't anybody else feel uneasy about the celebration of this sort of thing?
No.
congratulations on your 4 mod points, moderators must be a bit loopy today
Hers my opinion: I demand a +5 informative, after all I am informing you, just of my opinion
Best 3 Sci Fi shows are

Stargate SG1!!!!
Admitably I only started watching it when sky one prepeated season 1 2 and 3, every day, at the end of season 3 in the UK. (2 years ago). Sue me.
OK, thats my non-outstanding opinion. I'll have karma with a side order of goatse. No tip. Thanks!
