I think the biggest feature that's missing is sensible and logical language design. Two languages that take java to the cleaners in this respect are Sather and Beta. I'll bet the person who hatched java has never even heard of those -- although they've both been around a lot longer than the Sun changeling.
I guess I'm lucky. I get to choose what language I use.
The proposal has been put on ice -- where with any luck it will freeze to death.
I say that's good news. I don't care whether it dies of apathy or whether it dies because I signed the petition, as long as it kicks the bucket!
As you can clearly see from the screenshots, here is another example of how Microsoft's policy of constant innovation is changing the face of information technology. It's a brave company that does what Microsoft has done and risk losing customers by breaking away from the traditional look and feel of the WIMP GUI in order to provoke a real evolution in the way we use computers. You'll see: within two years we'll all come round to using an interface of the kind they've invented here. So come on, folks, stop knocking Microsoft and admit that when it comes to new ideas, they're the tops!
...and it annoys me even more when any product that faulty gets some sort of reverent praise.
I don't think anyone gave it reverent praise in this thread yet but I'm tempted to give it a try.
But it annoys the jeebus out of me when someone calls either of them a "word processor."
And it annoys the skin off my tongue when anyone calls anything a word processor. That's just one of a million examples of badly-thought-out inexact brain-dead IT terminology. Calling LaTeX a word processor is no less meaningful than calling computerized typewriters word processors since it's a meaningless term in the first place. LaTeX calls itself a document preparation system, which at least shows that Leslie Lamport speaks intelligent English. Anyway, why do I use LaTeX myself? Simply because the documents it produces look great and take less time to prepare than with a WYSIWYG productivity-inhibitor.
I'm a bit puzzled as to how anyone could hope to "take control of" open source software.
Also, I'm not sure what open-source software has to offer governments over and above what they've already taken from it.
And lastly, I'm not sure governments have anything to offer OSS. Seems to me it got this far on its own, so who needs governments? who needs IBM?
'Scuse me while I muse some more. I'm trying to figure out why this news might be important.
The last thing a decent operating system needs is to be branded with the Microsoft stigma!! How could anyone take Linux or the BSD's seriously again?
However, if IBM are so keen, why not an IBM-Linux. Now there's something you could sell to corporate bosses.
I'm surprised that Mr. Invoice Portcullises has called this "C#". Normally the bad boys from Redmond try to hide clapped out ideas behind nice new names.
It's also a relief to see that Mirfoscot can't come up with anything better. If they'd used a modern OOP structure, we'd all have had to worry about Mifcroost imposing yet another set of painful Redmond standards.
Has anyone noticed the number of "so what" comments Miscrotof stories are getting nowadays? Back in the old days, when Mircofost baiting was fun, before they had all their sins officially exposed, people felt like saying something. Now it would seem lots of people, myself included, are at last giving them the disdain they deserve. As for companies getting shafted, all I can say is serves them right. You jump into a pool of piranhas when no one told you about piranhas and it's really bad luck; you jump into the same pool when piranhas are the talk of the town...
Therefore let's apply a valid rule of logic: the using of invalid premises does not invalidate a claim. All it does is discredit the claimant. So Linux might be the worst operating system ever after all.
That's not a personal view: I'm just reminding you of the rules.
That's not SuSE's fault !!

SuSE 7.0

Hooooold on a minute - honour where honour is due. SuSE didn't jump on the Linux bandwagon like the others, they've been around a long, long time. If there are a godzillion Linux distributions out there then it's hardly their fault. Do you know what, what's great about unixlike systems is that quality still counts for something and marketing doesn't count for shit. Red Hack spend millions on marketing, SuSE spend millions on improving their distribution and making **real** innovations (not acquisitions: real home-bred innovations)... and I'm betting that SuSE get a lot further than Red Hack in this game. Why?
What relevance does this article have to anything at all? Has Slashdot mistaken itself for a marketing magazine? - ah wait a minute - yes, of course, it's that magic word Microsoft again: I guess that makes it relevant after all.
I'd be extremely surprised if Microsoft was the only company who'd done any work on this sort of system, which after all, we've been talking about in science fiction for decades. We all know that one day the user interface will become less mouse-centric -- newspapers and magazines have been stuffing our heads full of it since I was a little kid and that was a very long time ago. Voice recognition's been around a while now, and this is just another logical step in that direction. But of course, since it's Microsoft that's doing it, it gets headlines on Slashdot. Personally I'm sick of the site of Microsoft's name and I think Slashdot should put a one year ban on its use and burn the droid icon. All those in favour?
Oh hell - I'll have to burn my sig too if they do that!
Yes there's a conspiracy to create a demand for processors that are far faster than people need, and overclocking is a nice way of saying up yours to the bloat people. No, that's not the reason you're overclocking. You don't really need that extra power. You just want to brag about how fast you made your processor run. Processors-overclocked-to-1Ghz customers are not the same market as processors-claiming-to-be-1Ghz customers, so if you overclock, it's no skin off the manufacturer's nose. Of course, there's also another, very small, not too conscientious market that might be interested in overclocking processors; I'll leave you to figure out which market. But I can't believe the manufacturers are trying to close that one up - that would imply they're concerned about our well-being, and you're not going to make me swallow that!
We're working on rewriting an arcade game from the early 80s using Mozilla technologies. Has anyone noticed how what used to be called "methods", "ideas", "algorithms", or any one of a dozen other terms are now called technologies? - like push technology - that's probably the funniest. So what are we supposed to call real technology to avoid being ambiguous nowadays?
So the reason Microsoft never innovated is that they didn't feel free to do so... that explains everything! Come on now, what's all this innovation shit about? Compared with companies that have only a fraction of their resources, Microsoft don't innovate shit. They're a marketing company, no more, no less.
Hell, stop rerading me, I'm not telling you anything new!
Seems to me that TrollTech have the same right as everyone else to do what the hell they like with their software. Just like Sun or... oh, come on, let's do some overkill... like Microsoft. The only question for me is: is their software any good? If it's good, it's probably worth some money - though I can't see from here who's paying them any. Who are TrollTech's customers?
As the absolute total of newsgroup messages increases, so entropy rises, resulting in a rich cache of pat replies which can be invoked as incatations in place of arguments. In many forums, it is customary to accompany such incantations with insults, as these too are a valuable way of attacking whilst having nothing new to say. As this entropy reaches a maximum, the need for human involvement will decline below the level needed to sustain interest and people will revert to more traditional exchanges such as fist-fights and poison-pen letters.
Though there's probably some truth in what you say, bear in mind that Indians rarely seeing things through the same eyes as Westerners. No one can guess what's going through an Indian mind but an Indian (or a Pakistani, since whatever you put between them - religion, politics - they are and always will be the same people). I'd recommend your voyaging to India if you haven't already done so. You'll get to see a real civilization, as close to untainted by "ours" as you can get. To many eyes, India looks like a backward country. Until they go there, that is. Then they realize that they never even got their basic definition right. Did you ever read Tad Williams? Think of the Indians as the Sithi. Oh... and I'm not Indian myself and will joyously accept being shot down in flames by one if she finds I'm talking crap.

Apple Insider was just about the most stupid link I ever followed in Slashdot. Go ahead, visit Apple Insider and learn how to Suck this sort of crap into your machine at three times your normal speed.
I think Slashdot needs a holiday. In any case, I'm going to give them one.
