Then extrapolate down the road to when we have 12 core machines, and 8 are CPU and 4 or GPU..... This is going to help a lot in the graphics department, and at lower cost/heat/watts than the current market.

Besides not really being the brains behind any of Apple's success (frankly, I'd credit Woz and others), he has clearly failed to learn from past mistakes.

The original Mac was YEARS ahead of any PC at the time. Literally, vastly superior. But by pricing them too high, and locking in control over the OS and over the ability of devs to write for it, the PC inevitably surpassed it in sales almost over night.

Fast forward a decade, and the same battle is happening again in the smart phone market. Besides being locked to AT&T, arguably the WORST cell provider in the nation, his hardware is over priced, and again, he's stuck with this outdated idea that vendor lock in is somehow going to guarantee Apple's success. There is literally no chance of that, and in fact, iPhone et al are doomed to failure absolutely by not providing a free and open platform for other vendors to write apps for. Android is clearly going to continue to dominate sales, and inevitably win the over all battle, just like Windows did last time.

Why does anybody even listen to Steve any more? Just because he's first to market? It's not like 8,000 other monkeys didn't have the idea for the iPhone before he did. He just got it to market first. BIG DEAL.

Steve is clearly too arrogant to grasp even the mildest of fundamental truths about human nature, particularly as it relates to sales and market share. Even the Mac Fanboys are getting sick of his blatant stupidity and selfish draconian lock in attempts, that will of course only serve to ensure that Apple fails, long term.

  14. A promising start to what end? on VirtualBox Beta Supports OS X As Guest OS On Macs · · Score: 1

This is a promising start, but to what end? Everything I'd do on a Mac is done much better on either Windows or Linux. I triple boot on a Dell Mini10v, and I never boot into mac anymore. Recording Music and Editing Video are way better in Linux Mint (and faster, and easier). And games are all obviously better and easier and faster on Windows. I have Firefox on all 3 platforms, but it still seems to run best on Windows. Frequently I actually run Firefox on a VDI of MicroXP, just so I can have all my bookmarks and passwords on all 3 OSes.

Can somebody explain to me what the killer App is of OS X? I've tried iLife and some other stuff, and really come away thinking that OpenShot and Kompozer are better, easier, cheaper, and faster.

  15. ...and why Apple is doomed to failure AGAIN. on The End of the PC Era and Apple's Plan To Survive · · Score: 1

Remember when the Mac was way better than any other computer on the market? I do. It had a mouse, a windowed desktop environment, was an all in one idiot proof box, and even talked to you in your language. But, attempting to control their software stack from the bottom to the top, Apple did not allow developers enough room to make good software for their computer, and Mac lost to DOS, and then Windows in rapid succession.

They are doing the exact same thing now on iPhone/iPad. Without the killer app, their platform will die, and they don't have the killer app. Firefox easily beats Safari in every usage scenario I've seen, and that alone is enough to thwart serious users from using their platform. Nix YouTube, and other Adobe sites.....

As usual Apple is first to market, with a vastly superior product, but by trying to control the whole enchilada, they will be relegated to an also ran in no time.

Not to mention that the latest Ubuntus and derivatives (specifically Mint) are better OSes, with better apps included out of the box, free, and ludicrously easy to install, EVEN ON A MAC. You think some hackers won't port a killer touch Ubuntu over and make an iPad no better than other cheaper competing slates? Think again. By the end of this year there will be competing pads that are adequate, and with a superior OS a la Linux, or perhaps android.

And in the phone market, Apple has already lost to Android. The writing is on the wall, give it 2 years.

  16. LOL. The Future is Obvious. on Steve Jobs Publishes Some "Thoughts On Flash" · · Score: 1

They are BOTH right (Steve Jobs and the less charismatic Adobe CEO). Yes, Apple is overly draconian, and despite being first to market with the iPhone (just like they were with the mouse on the original Mac!), they will soon be replaced by open alternatives. However, Jobs is definitely right about Flash, too: It's dated, it sucks, and it's irrelevant now with the ratification of HTML 5.

Granted, both of these truths will take time to play out in reality. But Android is definitely going to kill iPhone the same way Windows killed Mac, but faster, and more completely because Android is much more open than Windows was. Likewise, right now YouTube and FaceSpace and all the other stupid web 2.0 stuff is still running flash, but users are finicky, and the second there is a better alternative run on standards based computing..... Well, you get the idea.

Best of All: Google owns YouTube, pretty much the only thing 60+% of web users use Flash for. I'm quite sure they will switch the entire library to html 5 and Theora at some point, which will signal pretty much immediately the death knell for Flash. Not that Steve Jobs will do much celebrating when everyone owns an android.

Give it 5 years. Call me back then and congratulate me on my foresight of the obvious.

    Linux (for serious work)
    Firefox
    VLC

If there are other examples of proprietary still being a hegemony, that is just a matter of time. I fully expect Windows and Mac to lose to Linux, or another FOSS OS, but hegemony takes TIME to defeat. I think in 2020, or 2030, my statements will prove all the more true across every aspect of software and hardware development except MAYBE in a few commercial games. That's what I meant by long term. Linux is still gaining in market share every year at the expense of Windows and Mac. Once it reaches a parity, the switch will happen exponentially faster.

I'm much more upset about the lack of innovation in the way that people interact with computers. I know, Rome wasn't built in a day, but it seems like our OS could at least have the graphic appeal of say, Quake 2. Our Desktop is still so flat and limiting, and online collaboration is still so hokey and primitive. All this could be fixed, and largely for free if based on currently available FOSS. Instead we're cloning Windows XP with a prettier menu shade. WTF?

I'd like a 3d online space where my avatar can stand in the rustling grass of a windy prairie. In this environment, are a variety of nearby locations: A Desk, a Chess board, a poker table, a coffee table, a doorway, and a Super Nintendo. This environment could then be populated real time with the avatar of anyone else online at that time, with instant VOIP in 3d positional audio. In addition, the face of their avatar could be exactly modeled real time from a webcam image of the actual user's face. In this environment, either avatar can then interact with any of the aforementioned locations. Choosing to interact with the Desk would bring up an Windows XP clone, or a Windows XP Virtual Machine. Both Avatar's could use the desktop at the same time (by password invite, for avatar's from a separate IP as the host), real time, and continue their VOIP, and also have an optional skype cam pic up real time, directly from the 3d world. A simple key press would then exit back into the 3d environment and leave the other options (ESC). The Chess Board would work as a regular chess game, online, and with your opponent either being their webcam image, or their avatar with webcam mimicked facial expressions and jaw movement. The Poker Table would act much the same way, and any card game would be possible, complete with rules, and chips, etc.. The Coffee Table would have Digital Publications, Blogs, and other News and Information sources, directly updated real time from the Internet. The Super Nintendo would open an emulator locally and remotely, so both avatar's could play a multiplayer Super Nintendo game online, again, possibly with webcam images up simultaneously. The doorway would open an FPS as preferred by the local host, and I would have mine set to a customized Urban Terror, complete with 3d positional VOIP with whatever Avatar I walked into the doorway with.

This "Dream OS" would also optionally backup it's user files and information on several different computers real time over the internet, maintaining a backup of all your files and information on a distant machine, like your brother's, or cousin's. This would ensure that no matter you logged in, in the world, provided one of the machines was online with your backup information, you could get online and use your computer as normal from any computer in the world, including newer cell phones.

While we're at it, my dream cell phone would run this OS, and have an android mode for on the go travel, but when plugged into a USB charger, it would automatically work with a USB mouse, keyboard, speakers and Monitor, and then act as a regular computer. This cell phone would also have a front facing camera, for Skype like chat on the go, provided there's nearby wifi, or enough bandwidth. While on the road, this cell phone would act pretty much line a Droid, or a MyTouch, or a Nexus One.

Somebody build a few of these and send me one.
