Even better, let's make sure wikipedia has a note somewhere on the front page that links to something about BASIC INFORMATION THEORY. Unless they do already. People should be easily notified that double checking facts in life is always a good idea! Apparently they need it more than their getting it!
Seriously. Wikipedia is going to have growing pains like any other online medium where public input is involved. To pretend that a couple of sources are misleading in anyway is a little silly. 98% of Wikipedia by these standards is an OK source. Most likely, verifiably. Seems like a good working system, and I know it is already, because I USE IT. Now if I want to double check facts, an extra source is never a bad idea, which is why I'm so into project gutenberg (sp?) and other sites like that as well. The more information we have immediately available, the better. Everyone should double check all of their facts anyway if it's about anything really important!
Wikipedia is a free and open source of information for all people. I'm all for it if they get decent data off of somewhere else. I'd like it if it was more properly bibliographized or whatever, but that seems like small potatoes over the background of what it is that wikipedia is attempting to be for the world.
What stupid text book industry shill came up with this crack pot survey? And as somebody else pointed out ~1% of plagiarism isn't exactly high in my opinion.
Stop being an asshole, and if you DO find plagiarism, label it as such, and give us a better footnote as to where the original information came from.
Seriously, Saddam is a mass murderer with a proven track record. Now if only we could get the death sentence for all the henchmen who funded him and were in cahoots with him from the beginning:
George Bush Sr. Donald Rumsfeld Henry Kissinger
I'm sure there's a list of about 20 American politicians with an equally appalling record of murder and mayhem that were at one time supporting his regime. Let's go ahead and have a little barbie trial for all of them too, right before an election.
I for one welcome our new mass murdering mass murderer murderer overlords.
Obviously, implementation of this one is difficult, but I read an article about fish farming in huge warehouses in urban environments. There were actually a lot of benefits, including separation of fish and less occurance of disease. I'm not a fish farmer, but perhaps a mechanized urban fish farm in every city would solve all this. Help us plan better for off planet living, too....
Well you're right, ET is a great game. But you completely glossed over the fact that the Linux interface is less than convenient for the majority of first time users. I mean, Let me be the first to shout at all you zealots out there, and MS too, for that matter: How bout just KILWUTB. Keep it Like Windows Used to Be. A desktop, easy menus, easy control panel, easy driver installation.... What the linux crowd doesn't realize is that most people just want it to work first. Security is a nice Second. What the Mac and MS crew don't realize is that shine and gloss are not as cool as stuff that "just works", although to be fair, I have been jealous of some mac heads on a few things lately: Namely iChat and the security of a Solid Unix based Platform. And it IS nice the MS is finally offloading appropriate functions to the graphics card, which will improve a lot of peoples user experience (eventually, I expect a lot of unforeseen issues at release, you heard it here first, ha ha).
But if there was a FOSS drop-in windows replacement. Maybe with an online San Andreas Multi-Player Online chat pre installed and Open Office..... A whole lot of people would never look back to windows, mac, or any other OS. It'll happen eventually. The corporate interests have already lost and are conceding with "shared source" and the like, but face it, People will pay for unDRMed music and movies over DRMed ones any day, and as long as both options are available, and eventually my imaginary drop in windows replacement WILL exist, complete with WINE, a FOSS skype alternative and FOSS online 3d chess, people will choose the easy path, and then the free one.
The free one just isn't good enough yet. I feel like Cartman. Freeze me and wake me up when it is....
..isn't hardware support. Even n00bs can find a driver (sometimes!). The main problem is how arcane the entire file structure is, and how the menus don't behave properly. How Wine doesn't come pre-isntalled in most distros. How there are stupid little religious wars over gnome and kde, even though they both kinda suck. How different distros are addicted to random non-standard apps that aren't as cool as firefox. the default of not being root, and then having to logout and log back in and problems relating to this.... Not one decent native game (I'm picky!). No emulators. Winamp is still the best audio program, but that goes back to Wine not being preinstalled again. The ugly shit-brown of Ubuntu. Trying to figure out the Linux partition manager. Everything to do with gaming: Video drivers, audio drivers, etc.
But yeah, while you're fixing all that stuff including better hardware support would also be a plus I suppose.
Really the only advantage to Linux is philosophical at this point, and the fact that Redmond is a bunch of fuck ups who couldn't code their way out of a wet paper bag. And the fact that macs cost too much, and aren't really geared towards enthusiasts and gamers, who drive a significant portion of the market.
LOL. I was TRYING to be funny. Cry-babies. It's funny that the quote at the bottom of hate comments and such said, "Laugh and the world thinks you're an idiot." Serendipitous, anyway.
Seriously, most fags have cleaner asses, due to their preference of the ass as a sexual conduit. I mean, if you mean dirty in the conventional sense. Now if you meant dirty as in STD ridden, well then, yeah, statistically a fags ass IS more likely to be dirty, probably. You'd have to ask a fag proctologist, anyone here know a good one?
This is/., so I wanted to go ahead and put on my technical writing editorial hat for a second.....
rhY
PS I spelled proctologist correctly, but Firefox 2.0 is still marking it as a mis-spell. Someone care to submit that word to whatever dictionary they are using? Proctology comes up all the time on/., or at least it should since there is so much political discussion, and we all know all politicians are assholes.
The only way you're going to get real elections back in this country is the tried and true path:
Give me Liberty or Give me Death.
Sadly, that means that a whole lot of people are going to have to receive a helping of item B so that the rest of us can have some of item A later on.
As soon as they whacked Kennedy the writing was on the wall. We haven't had a democracy since then, and the current chicanery in our elections (though highly visible and fairly blunt and obvious) aren't going to go away until somebody dies. Hopefully it's the unlawfully "elected" officials first, and in particular Katherine Harris, but more than likely it will be some college kids with guns and a firm belief in our original bill of rights, which sadly, a lot of us will probably have to die to re-instate at this point.
Sorry, I know everyone is going to think this is a troll, but seriously:
If there was a FREE and FOSS OS that ran like windows, everyone would switch. It wouldn't even take more than a few months.
Mac OS is really pretty. I don't see people switching. Why? Because they don't know how to upload videos to youtube on a mac. Because they are used to MS office. Because windows came preinstalled on their first computer a decade ago, and they learned then how to do 98% of what they were ever going to do on a computer.
If a kick ass version of Linux with wine preinstalled ran 90% of the software out there today, including drivers, etc. The game would be over. If the distro was really polished vis a vis Mark's little blog, then it would happen even faster.
People want a FOSS windows clone.
Everyone else is just another minority, no matter how vocal.
I don't think linux will ever win the OS wars, but something like reactos might. That's a big if though, given how friendly I've seen the reactos community be to n00bs and random ideas.
OMG. I don't have mod points, but seriously, this is what I've been complaining about the whole time. If a linux distro worked like windows (which is a good way, btw), tons of people would switch. I'm not saying it has to be exact, but there are so many countless small annoyances for real computer users that most of them give up and just switch back to windows right away. Myself included.
You bring up a very valid point. SUPERIOR being the key word there. I for one will not install a regular windows cd ever again after discovering TinyXP, which is totally illegal, but runs a million times better than regular windows.
Actually, I may just never install windows again and leave an old XP box hooked up on the network and use it via TightVNC. I mean, why not?
I've said this SO many times. Even if the roads were much, much less efficient than the crystalline silicon panels, the vast expanse of them would more than make up for that.
For starters, he faked an election and had his corrupt brother rig a statewide vote.
Then he played a shit load of golf and ignored terrorist threats until 9/11.
Then he invaded Afghanistan so we could put a pipeline from the middle east to Russia.
Then he ruined the constitution.
Then he bombed the shit out of Iraq, including casualties across every demographic.
Then he let a bunch of black people drown.
Then he approved torture, and eliminated basic laws that have been in place for centuries, like Habeas Corpus.
So he's done plenty good. If you are a person who enjoys fascism, hates people in other countries, particularly Arabs, are not a fan of any of our founding fathers, like torture, hate black people, like genocide, and hate the rule of law. If you are that person, he is a sure-fire winner!
Vote W again in 2008! Let's really show those fuckin' towel heads!
Let me assure you I have attempted Lillypond and there is nothing Finaleish about it. Except of course that Finale ALSO sucks compared to Sibelius.
Not having a decent FOSS score writing program is really discouraging. It seems like it would be a very easy kind of program to write, and would benefit a lot of poorer musicians, both in impoverished areas here in the US, and for impoverished musicians in the third world.
Having a few good OLPCs and a decent music editing program could really improve music literacy all over, if you wanted to get even more serious.
What I generally do is translate somebody else's midi file in Sibelius, and then re save it as a midi, and then print that midi in Finale. I'm pretty sure that means nobody can have any part of my copyright, since I'm completely rewriting the whole score twice, with heavy editing.
I've disagreed with many Google decisions since their last few years of success, but they are dead on on this one.
Freedom of Speech is WAY more important than how any of you cry babies feel about what people might be saying.
People who still get upset by racism are retarded. At this point racism is generally considered a form of retardation, so getting all worked up about it is completely unnecessary.
Freedom of Speech however, is getting limited more and more each day (at least in this country), I mean, if you say you'd like the president dead, you can go to jail for that, even if it's obviously just speech and you don't even own a gun!! Personally though, I'd rather see Cheney in jail, and bush in a straight jacket, or somewhere else where they put retards.
Now are you going to limit my speech because I'm mean about retards? Or is it valid to want a president who is not mentally handicapped?
Whoever this is bitching about freedom of speech and google needs a big cup of STFU. They are obviously retarded and don't understand the slippery slope of free speech whatsoever.
Which is that we don't have an independent media anymore. Rupert Murdoch is as likely to be a whistle blower as Karl Rove is.

Personally, after watching 911mysteries and other films on related topics, and reviewing the scientific facts for myself, I'm convinced that we already live in 1984, and the only solution is the bloody ugly one that Thomas Jefferson and most of our other founding fathers completely supported.
You did mention the "liberal" media, so you touched on it, but really, when 3 channels are quoting each other with created facts by obvious pundits who are clearly party members.....
You don't have freedom of the press anymore, and it's game over for democracy.
It's been that way since Kennedy got whacked, and on a related issue, that was also our last real election.
