LOL You caught me arguing about completely the wrong thing. I don't like java because I have to have a JRE installed on my machine, and so far, every JRE has slowed my PC unnecessarily. I'm not THAT picky about well written code, or which language a program is in. I just want a binary that runs without an extra layer of software. Actually, more than that I want a binary that doesn't even mess with the registry.

I'm still not installing JRE to slow down my computer. It can be as open source as it wants. Why do people still bother with java? It's a poorly designed, poorly implemented language. I'm not going to bog down my machines with any program that slows it down un-necessarily, which means: I'm not using anything written in java. Now if it being open sourced means that I can get applications written in java as precompiled binaries not needing JRE, well, then maybe.

I've switched over about 50 people to Firefox. The ramifications of this are significant. First: It's a real black eye for Microsoft for every user I've switched, not because they switched, but because of how much happier they are with Firefox, and how that makes them view MS overall. IE has gotten so bad that the majority of people I switched now view MS as a whole as inferior, and are looking for alternatives in other software realms as well. I haven't had the gall to switch anybody off of windows yet, but I've switched SEVERAL people quite happily from MS Office to OpenOffice, from WMV to BSplayer and MPC, and almost every outlook user is a happy thunderbird user now.

I've gotten a few people to switch from photoshop to the gimp as well, for the simple reason that it is free for any future upgrade.

Firefox deserves HUGE kudos for making an enormous mark in the mind share of the average computer user and representing FOSS. When I explain the benefits of FOSS and people get used to Firefox, overall they want as much open source as they can get from there on out.

I know because I'm one of them.

My prediction is that MS will loose customers for ALL of their products gradually because of the inroads Firefox has made into the web browser space. Open Source is the inevitable future for most software, and even grandmas and grandpas and kids are starting to get that idea.

Spoken like a true never been to American. Most of the people I know in southern California, from the kid on the street to the republican/christian business owner look at the police here as a street gang with public funding. I can't recall the last time a bill to up the funding was approved in California. Nobody wants more of the same from the "serve and protect" department, because they've become almost unilaterally the "harrass and molest" department.

    Consider the following facts:
Nearly half the population of the US resides in California.
90% of Californians live in Southern California.
California has roundly supported every bill to legalize marijuana and limit the penalties for DUI (drunk driving).
Weed is still illegal, and getting a DUI still costs over $10,000.

At least in California, the majority opinion seems to be we no longer live in a democracy, and our current government merely serves the special interests that pay them cash directly in the form of campaign contributions and other kick backs. I'd venture to say the word on the street across the nation doesn't deviate too far from that.

They haven't singled out an ethnicity and made them wear yellow badges yet, but other than that there are PLENTY of examples of fascism and anti-constitutional activity going on in this country. Very few of us are still under an illusion that anything else is the case. I'd be saying this out loud on a street corner with millions of others, if they weren't going to round us all up and put us in a "free speach zone" far away from public view, and likely an unhealthy environment with some local pollutants.

It's really too bad, too, because Franklin and Jefferson in particular were very bright men who worked very dilligently to secure our on-going freedoms and yet still failed.
