I've been saying EXACTLY THAT for over 20 years. When you consider the positive and negative effects of ZPE and MNT, there is no doubt that things are going to get scary and we should all hedge our bets by having someone out in the distance somewhere "safe". Particularly with enough genetic material to sustain a distant ecosystem.

You mean a company that unethically champions DRM also exploits 3rd world slave labor while using some FOSS ideas to distribute a closed source OS on locked down over-priced hardware has ethics problems? HOLY SHIT!

Look, maybe they aren't QUITE as bad as Sony or even MS, but until consumers demand real products that don't limit what the user can do on them at reasonable prices.... These corporations will all still operate the same old way:

    Shit software
    Shit hardware
    pollution
    slave labor
    monopoly

The ONLY way to talk to these people is with your dollars.

I for one would gladly welcome our new mp3 player making overlords, particularly if they had an open source OS that allowed me to run ogg, or whatever other format my bleeding little heart would desire.

I try hard not to use words like never, as they almost always prove to make my statements false. Hence it is very easy to discern your paraphrasing as a straw man and discard it imediately.

Furthermore, you could consider that kind of sexual predator an outlier. A simple statistical analysis of anything is going to suggest that outlier research can lead to dangerous dead ends and assumptions, and over all not be especially useful "on the whole". Not to say that being aware of outliers isn't an essential part of any analysis.

And in this case I think it is essential to be very aware of sexual predators, and make wise decisions not based on them, but based on the rest of us, who ultimately matter a great deal more.

I'm all for personal privacy, but I think one great thing about MySpace is that it's hard to "fake it". You can pretend to be somebody you're not, but by and large kids in particular are really savvy to this kind of "fronting". Let's just all be who we are, whether we smoke weed, like kinky wierd sex acts, or are a creepy vegetarian. Let's stop lying about it and just have a good time, online and off. People are such fucking cry babies I swear. If every person in the country was totally honest about who they were, and these lame corporations still had all their lame "standards", they'd quickly not have ANY employees. Trying to make everyone pretend to be something they're not is just stupid.

Go ahead and check my MySpace, my piss, my driving record, and my credit record. I ain't perfect, but I'm a good worker and I get the job done, and there's probably about 200 million others of me in this country so STFU.

  7. The duh department. on What Mainstream Media Think of Gaming · · Score: 2, Insightful

This just in! People who play video games are under represented in mediums which they are less interested in! Why doesn't bloomberg cover reggae concerts more often? The medium most gamers prefer is THE INTERNET (or technically, the WWW). So of COURSE there isn't going to be more video game coverage on TV and the movies. Gamers don't watch as much TV and movies, and they are more than happy to read about games online. In fact, as represented by the huge popularity of "The Office" and "The Daily Show" on torrent sites, I'm guessing that TV is more likely to get co-opted onto the computer than vice versa. TV, Movies, and the recording industry are dead. Long live TV, the movies, and the recording industry on bit torrent!

Ok, well I was still going to write the post, but then I saw all these other hillarious posts with cogent points and witty remarks. Since this new technology came up, and my post still wasn't ready, I decided to start all over and come up with an entirely new post. Now, some of my fans will be upset by the aditional wait, but the final quality of the post I will release will justify this decision. Why release a post now, or immediately in the future that is clearly now dated when compared to the other posts here in this story? Trust me, the new witty remarks and cogent points are going to be well worth it, and of course my post is going to have the original "crhylove post" feel that made my original post such a classic. Plus, for the other crhylove fans, I've been posting plenty on other stories, and they seem to have been well received. Most of the Slashdot industry has modded my posts as positive, and you can even check out my karma in the latest Postspot, or on PlanetPost.

The point was that donations should be cumpalsary, and if not, then at least within reason. $200 seems like plenty to pay for a $100 product. The fact that somebody isn't already making and selling these with Ubuntu installed shows that there is no more free market in this country, and I think that's sad. Though a completely different problem with different solutions than the one stated to be solved by the OLPC program.

I think the whole program is a worthwhile endeavor, and I'd like to see it succeed. I think that even with it's good intentions and aims following the fast nickels rule of business is a good idea. If they can sell 100 million at $200 and only $20 million at $300.... Why the hell NOT sell them cheaper, make more money and donate EVEN MORE LAPTOPS to the 3rd world?

If you really want to draw people into the whole FOSS arena and generate pieces in the real world, make it applicable to real life. I think an all CG documentary about LOTS of subjects would dominate text books, and making one under GPL or GML or whatever would make it an editable improveable piece that could be used again and again, and improved over time by every viewer or instructor who used the material. Plus I can imagine quite a few topics where CG graphics would help clarify the subject matter for the student. Maybe even some computer lessons. Now granted, clippy sucked, but maybe FOSS can do a whole shit load better...
