That is nothing, wait until insurance companies get a hold of your DNA info and use it to profile you based on the likelihood of you getting certain diseases. Then the fun will begin.

  2. I just checked and the wayback machine appears to corroborate the presidents claims. According to the archives (you have to check all the times, takes awhile) from 2012 to 2016 google did have a link on their homepage about the SOTU and from 2017-2018 there is no link.

  3. "The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. H. L. Mencken US editor (1880 - 1956)"

  4. Sort of off topic, but there never seems to be accompanying reports of sonic booms when objects like this are spotted moving at impossible speeds and demonstrate "...capabilities that seem to outstrip all known human aircraft..." Either these objects are an illusion of earthly origin or they are real and do not displace air when moving. Assuming the second option is the correct one what interesting hypothesis can be dreamed up about how these objects might be propelled?

  5. No Sonic Boom? on Ask Slashdot: What Is Your View On UFO Sightings? · · Score: 1

"Often the apparent spacecraft does something improbable like standing completely still in the sky and then shooting off to somewhere at an incredible speed" is a common theme to sightings but never reports of a sonic boom, which obviously MANY more people would notice. But for fun let’s pretend these sightings are genuine and these objects move at incredible speeds without displacing air, what interesting hypotheses can be dreamed up about how these objects are propelled?

I have developed apps for the TC51 and strangely there are not that many rugged android devices out there with integrated scanners, good ones anyway with well designed and documented libraries for getting scanner input (data wedge wasn't feasible). Even though the the OS is the same on different devices the libraries are proprietary, so switching between vendors is not as easy as you would think.

I wonder what would stop somebody from re-purposing the sim card and proceed to destroy their data plan and what legal consequences would be in this case?

  9. As a 45 year old, white, straight male I am slightly more desirable than nuclear waste when it comes to being employed in tech nowadays. I hope they prevail and some sort of precedent is established. I guess the only purpose of having a VP O' Diversity is to ensure sufficient hues of dermis and the correct ratio of penises/vaginas, fuck all else.

  13. IT depts often do suck on Why Businesses Move To the Cloud: They Hate IT · · Score: 1

I work for a small company that provides specialized services to large corporations (saas). I cannot count how many times we have been close to closing a deal with new customer when at the last minute they have to "run it by IT". The typical response from IT is "...we can build that...". Which really means the dude who runs the IT views any external technology as some kind of threat to his empire. Occasionaly we come across an IT dept that will take the time to make a reasonable assessment followed by a security audit and when that happesn we usually get the deal. For us the ideal scenerio is avoiding IT altogether.

  14. Not Apple! on Apple Bans DUI Checkpoint Apps · · Score: 1

I would think a company like Apple would respond differently to political pressure. Checkpoints to begin with skirt a fine line with the 4th amendment, being stopped by the police for no reason so they can observe you up-close and perform an interrogation. The last time I went through one of those things there must have been about 20 or 30 cops standing around. I would think having those guys driving around looking for erratic drivers would be a better use of resources.
