You don't think you're going to use a pulley and dumb waiter to get to space.
Why not? Why not a series of pullies and dumbwaiters, like standard elevators. Might have to get on a new elevator every now and again, but why not?
In other words, you have to expend just as much energy to go up
I don't think so. Let's reduce the problem to putting a man 100' above the ground. Elevators can do this now for pennies worth of electricity. How much would it cost to use a rocket to put a man 100' off the ground. Millions of dollars, no?
Actually, that does not prove that people have been to the moon. Could have been placed by an unmanned mission.

OK, one more time. "Fair use" merely makes it LEGAL to copy, under certain circumstances. It does not oblige the copyright holder to make it EASY for one to copy his stuff, only makes it LEGAL to copy IF you can do so.

That's horrible news. I like my ReplayTV just fine as it is, without it "gaining acceptance". Once it gains acceptance, count on them being legistlated out of existance, or having annoying, during-the-show commercials all over the screen.
People, do us PVR owners a favor. Ignore PVR's. Don't buy one, don't recommend them, don't say how great they are. The longer they don't "gain acceptance" the better.
Yeah, he's a regular genius: You: Hello. Prof.Phreak: Hello. I'm dying to make you my friend. You: No problem Prof.Phreak: Try being a bit more open-minded. Be positive!
I had no problem registering with the NY Times web site. It was easy, and required no verification.
I read it every day. Until I clicked an article a coupla weeks ago, and was directed to an ad which I was supposed to watch before being re-directed to the story (ala Salon). That did it. I'm never going there again. Washington Post is my mainstream news site now... no enforced ad views and no registration.
I don't know why, but anonymous registration does not bother me, but forcing me to read a fucking ad does it to me.
So National People's Radio web site says deep linking is "prohibited". So what? They don't say they're going to sue, they don't say anything about any force of law, they don't threaten any kind of action they don't say nuttin' except "prohibited". Talk is cheap, and the ten bytes needed to represent the word "prohibited" is even cheaper.
Where I live (Denver) the hardcopy Onion is distributed for free at finer stores statewide.
I can see it now... it's almost an Onion story: "Man Buys Otherwise Free Content".
Seriously, all the good stuff is on their web site. The hardcopy has some ads you don't get on the site, but I'd not pay for that as long as you can type onion.com
yeah, you're right, the language froze seventy years ago and no new words are allowed. Anything new since 1930 and not approved by a quorum of 70 year old women is a colloquialism.
Update the frickin' lameness filter to filter out those page-widening posts! Jeezus H. Christ, I could whip out the Perl required to filter that stuff out in an afternoon.... this is getting old.
I moved not long ago and never changed my profile. But my profile now shows my new state and zip! My GF's Hotmail account profile was changed likewise, and she never changed her profile, too!
one should ask why they built the capability to do this into their system in the first place
ReplayTV's are basically computers with software, modems, hard drives and graphics chips. The capability to send usage information through the modem is inherent in such a system.
Keep in mind the hundreds of priests now being wrongfully prosecuted due to a stererotype that is spreading like wildfire. Bear in mind how it is ruining their lives
Who was it that said, "Ye shall be known by the company you keep"? It's on the tip of my tongue... I think it was that Buddha dude, yeah that Buddha dude.
We are the envy of the world, so by extension, we are disliked by the majority of people out there...
Do you really think this is why America is hated? Because they envy us? Don't you suppose the fact that most of the bombs dropped in the world have "Made in the USA" on it might have a LITTLE something to do with the hatred thing?
I seem to recall the CIA said a couple of months ago it was going to start spreading disinformation to enemies during war time to help achieve its aims. Then it came out and said a week later, "no, bad idea, we won't be doing that."
Could this be an example of their disinformation policy in action?
that the only reason I can afford a computer (as well as a house, car, enough food, healthcare etc) is that lots people not that different to myself have to do without these things
You have a computer because it was CREATED out of stuff, not taken from some poor soul somewhere else.
So many people believe that wealth is a zero sum game. "In order for 'A' to have, 'B' must do without", they believe.
It ain't so. Wealth is and can be CREATED. Walth is limitless... wealth creation occurs when you create a thing which is more valuable than the sum of its parts. That is the source of wealth: CREATION, not discovery, or looting from weaker folk. It's open-ended, limitless, and not zero-sum game at all.
The webifying of the entire thing, because that is what Documentum is after right now, is strategically an absolute mess
I don't get the point of the Documentum web client. To begin with, you have to install this DLL in order for it to work with IE. I mean, if you have to install binaries on your system to get the Web client to work, why not just install a stand alone client? And don't get me started about how you have to turn on ActiveX to use it.
Plus, the web client is harder to use than the old client and has less functionality. I just don't know what they were thinking when they shipped it but, wow, does that web client suck.
What really bugs me is how people refer to Osama Bin Laden as "Osama". Of course, that's better than the New York Times' style of "Mr. bin Laden" but I digress.
Actually, communications between commercial aircraft and air traffic controllers can be picked up with a Radio Shack scanner.

Last I checked (which was months ago), the response was:
"Actually, I prefer the term 'jovial'"
Yeah, he's a regular genius:

You: No problem

you lying sack of shit how can you track your competitors shipments. you need tracking numbers.

Wealth is limitless? Fantastic! Why don't we just give some (why not lots?)
What a jackass. Limitless means "having no limit", not "an infinite supply".

And if someone had a warrant to bend you over and make you their bitch, would you comply, then argue the legality later?

Did you even read the article? The user's IP address is sent to Netscape, along with a "unique ID". That is not exactly "anonymized".
