"Ecology" is the study of ecosystems, not ecosystems themselves. The interests of ecology would refer to, I suppose, the various desires of the various professors and students -- grant money, grades, tenure, and sex, in whatever order.
Arcade games and Atari didn't care which hand you used
Well, the standard VCS and C64 switching joysticks sure did -- there was only the one "Fire" button, and that was oriented so that it fell under your left thumb as you moved the stick with your right hand.
Unusual. Strange. Bizarre. Unprecedented (see, one could even use superlatives). Alien technology. Secret of the Ancients. A Better Way. The One True Way. Un-fucking-believably weird, dude.
There is something very wrong when an American is denied a job in the U.S. because he speaks English.
No, it sounds to me like he wasn't hired because he didn't speak Chinese.
Picture yourself entering the Chinese market. Wouldn't you look for locals who spoke English as well as Chinese?
Obviously if that was the case they should have advertised that they were looking for bilingual individuals. This way they wasted your friend's time as well as their own, and they owe him an apology. On the other hand, maybe the translator they hired to write the ad screwed it up, and since they couldn't read the ad they didn't know.
Yes, that's true in this case, and I assume was true in the case of your experiment, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that others are sensitive, or that these folks are but exagerate the immediacy of it. Just because my premonitions of a bus crash are hogwash doesn't mean that I'm immune to that Flxible bearing down on me, and CO can kill me just as dead even though I can't smell it.:)
Not that I buy into this stuff, but it occurs to me that an experiment like that is fairly simplistic. Try putting subjects into a room to see if they can detect the presence or absence of vitamin C -- do your results call scurvy into question?
Then again, I come from a family where my dad didn't let me dodge responsibility. I paid for my actions.
But he did teach you to post anonymously!
But, obvious ironies aside, I agree with you. In fact, I don't see why you feel this should stop with computer people.
It's time that the so-called "victims" of armed robbery, rape, and murder be brought to justice. It's shocking that people leave their homes without taking adequate precautions. I propose a minimum sentence of 5 years for all those injured in violent crimes, with the sentence to be served by a member of the immediate family in the case of the murder victims.
As for the so-called "thieves" and "killers" -- clearly they have done society an enormous favour and should be rewarded accordingly.
No, I didn't mean to suggest that they would try to ban the entire concept, but I wouldn't bet the ranch that flashing your lights to warn of speedtraps is entirely legal either -- unenforceable, of course, but that's not at all the same thing. It's a reach, but the phrase "obstruction of justice" comes to mind, as well as things like "interfering with a police officer in the performance of his duties".
There is a site warning of speedtraps: SpeedTrap.org, and obviously it's still there. On the other hand, it's not running in realtime, and there's no way to know perxactly where and when contributions are being made. If I'm entering stuff right there in Podunk County and in view of a righteously indignant police officer, jurisdictional issues are suddenly resolved.
No legit usage for radar detectors? I don't own one, but I have to differ with you here. I find it strange that they can take me to court on the basis of a machine that I'm explicitly barred from detecting. Maybe the dmaned thing wasn't even switched on -- it's strictly the cop's word on it. I'd like to think that a police officer's word is good, or at least worth more to him than a lousy ticket, but it still bothers me.
Hint: Israel is not occupying Oman, Egypt, or Saudi Arabia.
Al Queda is not a Palestinian organization. Their agenda is considerably different. Simply because they speak they same language and worship the same way doesn't make them allies any more than, for instance, Greenpeace and the KKK, although no doubt from several thousand miles away it would be easy to view them both as just "American dissidents" and lump them together.
Good Lord no! I haven't even read it in English. I was just ruminating on the phrase "translated to the screen", and wondered if you were comparing translations to one another.
and fliping the length specification to postfix for clarity
So the need to rewrite the comment for clarity helps demonstrate the clarity of the original?
Face it, it was an awkward construct. This ranks about one millionth on my list of important things, right after Gilligan's Island, but it produced this cascade of comments in classic Slashdot fashion (and even resulted in my being called an "assfuck" by some illiterate who apparently can't follow a thread or doesn't understand that some comments may be hidden from him)
Personally I'm happy to live in a world in which so many of us have so little to do.:)
Are you sure there wasn't a midget in there?
Say, didn't you sit in front of me in algebra?
I think you missed the "still" -- AFAIK, you can d/l the SDK for PalmOS right here.

Nope, they're USNA and we paid them (although not much, especially given the pretty high caliber of student the service academies get).
Now there's a fine distinction. "Obstruction of justice? No sir, we prefer to think of it 'avoiding complications'..."

Not in the parking lot you don't, no. The public street or sidewalk, yes.
As for the cop, I agree, but I'd bet that those states which currently ban radar detectors would probably also want to go after this.

No, over here we prefer to verb our nouns. "Conjugation" is something prisoners do when their wives visit.
Yeah, with a resume like this, how can you lose?
Extras, schmextras, just as long as they shoot them, preferably twice in the head.
You mean like in, "Dewd! You're taking way too many 'ludes these days!"? :)
"Banned book"? What was it?
Good Lord no! I haven't even read it in English. I was just ruminating on the phrase "translated to the screen", and wondered if you were comparing translations to one another.
Just curious -- did you read Zhivago in English or Russian?
I don't know. Should we start with Little Caesar?
