Dittos to the parent, even strecthing to third-party hardware. The (discontinued) VST FireWire CD-R/W drive that I ordered from the Apple Store on-line arrived DOA. I got on the phone with Apple, and the support guy started to give me an RMA number. There must be some sort of "overhead cost" caculator running in the background over there, because he stopped after about 10 seconds, and said "Never mind. Just toss it out. We'll ship another." And they did (using UPS ground instead of FedEx for the replacement, but still...)

The parent forgot to mention one item that might be useful to those considering jumping on the Dreamcast bandwagon and buying one. Every DC has its "born on" date imprinted on a barcode label on the bottom. So, you don't have to go in "blind" on knowing whether the second-hand unit you're looking at will work with CD-R games.

Don't want to be guilty of Astroturfing, byut what the heck IS a .emp file? Are you saying that they've implemented DRM? It's not mentioned on their homepage. I have to admit that I haven't bought anything new from eMusic lately, but I still have free download/burn access to all of the mp3's that I've "bought" over the last two years. don't I?

Not so. You should try eMusic. Their selection isn't as broad as Apple's, but I've bought full albums from They Might Be Giants, Bis, Apples in Stereo, Ted Hawkins and Bauhaus.

Chancellor Palpatine is *gasp* the same guy as Emperor Palpatine
While seemingly obvious, I think this is where the twist will come in. Lucas has alluded that there will be a huge surprise in the 3rd installment. Perhaps the Chancellor is actually a clone?
I seriously doubt this can be changed. The Palpatine storyline is CANON, established in the opening paragraph of the very first book (aside: am I the only person who still whants to know what 'The Journal of the Whills' is?). Go back and look at it. The plot is writ in stone. The only seriously open question to original trilogy fans is the triggering event in the Darth Vader conversion.

you should never send your original receipt for a rebate, and any rebate that requires it is fraud
I did not know this. CompUSA frequently has "dual" rebates, where you sent a copy of the receipt and the original UPC to one address, and the original receipt and copy of the UPC to a different address. I've never had a problem, as long as I follow the directions to the letter.

    My rules of thumb:

    • Dedicate yourself to the effort by setting aside one evening per month as 'rebate night' (I figure it pays ~$30/hour).
    • Make copies of EVERYTHING.
    • Take an extra copy of the blank form off of the "rebate wall" (because sometimes they use a color of ink that will vanish on your photocopy, and then you won't know whom to contact if there are problems).
    • And finally, if the rebate value is >=$50, send it either certified mail or 'delivery confirmation' (tracking number can be checked on the web).

My question: what makes anyone think there's an untapped market for such a thing, when Marathon Computer is closing out a very similar creature as what appears to be a loss? For those with an iMac DV (and a spare monitor lying around), a $300 replacement case seems to be a preferable option to a new Apple analog board, but that's about the entire anticipated customer base, right?

Isn't the problem that the DMCA doesn't differentiate between accessing media for which you are fully licensed, and that which you are "pirating?" Circumvention is circumvention, and citing examples selective application of the law should give other defendants a good way of challenging the law itself.
