    By this reasoning, MS s/w IS more secure. The d/l patches are installed under MS s/w control, thus alleviating end-user interaction (other than *CLICK*).

    And the update notification even makes is simpler.

    Of course the quality of the patches....

    Well, DBase (and its xBase off-shoots) also had type-less variables. Actually I prefer typed variables, but that is another war.

    As for natural language, a flat file app named Q&A allowed you to enter such things as "find all the people whose salary is over $50000". It would parse the query, translate it into code, then run it.

    It was a neat product, but the company died because of the GUI "revolution". By the time it was ported to Windows, MS Access had the market.

    Though why we need a Graphical interface to represent text data..., oops another war...

    Yeah right, like the general public has even heard about this.

    The general public simply uses the s/w that is provided to them. I was talking to my barber last week who complained that he had trouble typing. So I mentioned he should get a mic and voice s/w. He was absolutely amazed that this was even possible.

    He did not mention 2001 A Space Oddessy (HAL), Star Trek, anything.

    Asking him about things like Star Office vs MS Office, file extensions, etc, would be like asking him to code.

    Also, you can transfer fuel up by the tanker load.

    Well, not to get into a long-winded discussion, but...

    I have an email and web server in my apartment.

    Ok, bit you still have a connection via some ISP. And they could examine your outgoing packets (remember they see ALL your packets). Count the number of email addresses, or examine the number of addresses in a mailing list, and there you go.

    And since you are already paying them, they could just tack on the fee to your account.

    What if every email sent cost a fraction of a penny (or insert your own monetary unit)? Those of us that send out 1-2 emails a weeks would not even notice it. But a spammer would.

    Of course there would need to be controls around this, but hey, it would move the cost from the spammee to the spammer.

    An i486SX was an i486DX where the FPU was broken. Raher than throwing away the chip, they simply disabled the FPU.

    And a 486 co-processor was an i486DX where the CPU had a problem.

    Reminds me of the time I wanted to have a light on when the TV was on. I got the bright (well bright for a 12 year old) idea to put a light in series with the TV.

    Turned on the TV. It sort of came on, but the light bulb, whew...

    You could SEE it smoldering inside. Hit the off switch really quickly.

    Batteries under load will show a reduced voltage.

    Also, a warm battery will produce more voltage than a cold battery. Any car owner in winter will know this.

    So maybe he froze the battery, checked it, ran the test, and then (once the battery was warm) checked it again.

    Not really. There are lots of stories where a house or apartment burned down and the community contributed clothing, food, money.

    Usually the people burned out had no insurance, so the community pitched in.

    At least here in Canada .....
