((( I was considering getting a Mac OS X for my wife. Now I'm thinking about getting her a Linux box. )))
if you set your wife up with a linux system, and she catches so much as a glimpse of os-x on someone else's machine, you're going to end up in divorce court
for your wife's sake, and your brother's, you might want to take a closer look at the lawsuit -- if sorenson broke an exclusive contract with apple, then apple had every right to sue, and if you were a businessman, you'd have done the same thing under the same circumstances
i'm working on an animated feature film that my brother and i wrote, and which we hope to eventually sell to pixar... although it's intended to be a computer-generated cartoon, we hope to emulate chuck jones' style of animation (like, when a character realizes that he's just walked off a cliff, his body falls, his neck stretches, but his head stays where it is for several seconds before snapping out of the scene; if the character happens to be wearing a hat, his hand will reach up out of the scene, and grab the hat last)
i've had the good fortune to meet many of chuck's contemporaries, like the late, great director friz freling, and chuck's partner and background designer, maurice noble... sadly, on both occasions when i was to meet chuck, he took ill... i'm sorry that i'll never get to meet my hero, but his work is immortal, and i hope that his inspiration is felt, loud and clear, in my movie, which will be dedicated to chuck's memory
note: for a great retrospective on chuck jones, i recommend the warner brothers video chuck amuck, and/or the book of the same name
a lot of posters here are assuming that zim was canceled because it was too "subversive" for children, or something along those lines... actually, i have a friend who worked at nickelodeon for invader zim, and she said that the show was canceled because of the sept. 11 attacks: since the whole show is about taking over the world, it was viewed by nickelodeon big wigs/idiots as being "in bad taste" after sept. 11... they tried first to lobotomize the show, changing its entire premise, but the show's creators balked, and the rest is history (so to speak)
((( I would like to see someone light a fire under apple's butt to get a few details straightened out like a better software sound subsystem... )))
as of os-x 10.1, apple has the most advanced audio subsystem in existence ("core audio") -- it's got system-level support for multi-channel 32-bit/96k audio with ultra-low latency, and world-class, plug-in extensible midi support... the biggest problem with os-x audio isn't the subsystem, it's that it's all brand new, and very few sequencers and audio recording programs have been rewritten to take advantage yet (true of os-x as a whole, too)

don't you mean childish daydreams? childlike implies a sense of innocence or trustfulness, while childish indicates a lack of maturity... if you're going to insult me, please do it properly (i may be childish, but i've got better grammar than you -- nyah nyah, nyah nyah nyah...)
listen, zic, there are over 200 lawsuits pending against microsoft at the moment, many of which microsoft is going to lose -- i was merely suggesting that palm might be among those 200+ litigants looking to take a chunk out of microsoft's hide... according to others upthread, Be has retained the rights to sue for themselves, which i would be willing to bet will happen, given that jean-louis gassée was a prosecution witness during microsoft's antitrust trial
in addition to the codebase, patents, etc., palm will be able to sue microsoft on beos' behalf, for the unlawful licensing tactics that kept beos off the desktop... microsoft's o.e.m. licenses prohibited dual-booting, which was definitely a contributing factor to beos' demise (one of the few concessions that the d.o.j. "won" in the recent settlement was a prohibition on those types of licensing agreements)
given that microsoft is now a proven monopolist, and treble damages apply, palm stands to make considerably more money from microsoft than they spent for be
Amazon's disclosure could provide hard data for Linux proponents who have long argued that the open-source software can save corporations money over the Microsoft alternative. A Microsoft representative, however, warned that short-term savings seen by Amazon could turn into a long-term increase in costs.
... my first thought was that amazon's "long-term increase in costs" was going to come not from an inadequacy of linux, but rather by bill gates snatching up barnes-n-noble with a few billion of his pocket change and cutting off amazon's air supply... more realistically, look for a news item like this one in the coming months:
Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan denied today that the software giant was responsible for a series of errors that has cost online reseller Amazon millions in freight charges and plenty of ill will from thousands of its customers. "Microsoft competes vigorously and fairly. We are sorry that Amazon has chosen to compete in the courtroom rather than through innovation in the marketplace. We look forward to making our case at trial," Cullinan said.
Amazon charges that in the most recent upgrade to Microsoft's popular Internet Explorer browser, new "Autodecide" and "Autopurchase" features are adding unwanted items to Amazon customers' virtual shopping carts. In one alleged case, a purchaser who had sought to buy only a Smashmouth CD from Amazon.com ended up with $600 worth of Microsoft Press titles charged to her VISA account. In another case, a man received a dozen copies of Bill Gates' book Business @ The Speed of Thought with his Dr. Doolittle II video purchase.
"Autodecide and Autopurchase are two innovative new features that we innovated in the new Explorer upgrade," said Cullinan. "We added these innovative functions in response to overwhelming customer demand for innovation." He added that "we have compelling video evidence that the Amazon.com website is not fully compliant with W3C standards. Microsoft cannot be held responsible for any incompatibilities between our innovative Explorer browsers and Amazon's noncompliant site. Amazon's charges are completely baseless and without substance, and we think that we will win on the merits of this case."
No one from Amazon could be found for comment. Police are investigating their disappearance.
((( Compare the iBook to the Dell Inspiron 4000... it doesn't do well. )))
ok, here's a comparison for you... i went to the apple store and looked up the specs for a stock dvd-rom ibook, and then i went to the dell site and configured a similarly-featured inspiron 4000 here are the specs:
both laptops have 128mb of ram (apple only uses a single dimm for the ram, so i configured the dell with a single dimm as well)... both have 10gb hard drives, dvd-rom, ati rage mobility 128, usb (apple has two ports, dell has one), 56k modem and 1-year warranty
the ibook has built-in 100-base-T and firewire ports, so i added those options to the inspiron, taking up both of its card slots... since the ibook battery lasts for 5 hours, i opted for the more expensive dell battery, which delivers a maximum of 4 hours
irreconcilable differences: the ibook has a 12.1" screen, while the dell has a 14.1" screen, both at 1024x768... the ibook uses a 500mhz g3 with 256k L2 cache, while the dell comes with an 800mhz celeron with 128k L2 cache (i'm pretty sure that the g3 beats the celeron bloody, but i'm no benchmark whiz)... for the next three months, you get a free lexmark printer with an ibook purchase... the dell comes standard with a "floppy drive," whatever that is
the prices? the apple ibook = $1499, the dell inspiron 4000 = $1741
basically, the extra $242 that you'd spend on the dell machine buys you a larger screen, and the aforementioned "floppy drive" thingy, but no printer... although a larger screen would be nice, the idea of running os-x, appleworks, imovie and itunes beats the living hell out of being stuck with windows me, microsoft works, dell movie studio software and microsoft media player (now with phone-quality mp3 playback!)
Gore's actual comment, in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer that aired on March 9, 1999, was as follows: "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
al gore was directly responsible for the funding bills that allocated money to create this country's internet infrastructure... he is the legislative equivalent of tim berners-lee or vinton cerf
the bill that actually got signed into law as part of george bush's 1991 budget was the high performance computing act of 1991 — the precursor to that bill (which was way ahead of its time) was the supercomputer network study act of 1986
there are others, but those are the two biggies... if you want more info, go to THOMAS and search under legislation/major legislation/previous and enter gore +computing... you'll find dozens of examples of mr. gore's legislative efforts for the computing industry
actually, what the article said was "This bad-boy feels more than twice as heavy as any socket heat sink we've seen other than what ships with Apple's G4s." (emphasis mine)
this may mean that the g4 heatsink is merely half as heavy as the pentium's instead of less than half as heavy like the other heatsinks they've seen...
you misunderstand my post (although i'm not trivializing your point)
i don't believe in a god that is separate from the universe -- what i'm saying is that god didn't create the universe, because god is the universe (and we are part of that process of creation/evolution known collectively as "god"...)
i'm not bothered by the infinite nature of time -- it's easy to imagine time existing infinitely in a forward direction, and it is conversely difficult to imagine that time will one day just "stop"... apply the same logic to time in the reverse direction...
as a subset of Everything, we are each individual fragments of a greater god... our purpose in life as caretakers of that fragment is to better ourselves and elevate our souls, so that god becomes perfect -- it's a daunting task, but we have eternity to achieve that perfection...
here's a religious question to ponder: if god has existed forever, and god created the universe, where did god live for infinity before creating the universe? my answer: if god = Everything, then god includes the universe (and all of its contents, including Us) it's a simple equation, with far-ranging ramifications -- it makes simple work of statements like "god knows Everything," and "we are all children of god," and "god is all around us," etc. think about it love, peace, infinity...
