As an IT director, I buy Dell and Gateway because of component compatability testing. I know, out of the box, that everything will work together properly.

HA!!!.... <obligatory stewie> imbicile....</obligatory stewie> 2 words: Lattitude D600. The USB ports on that thing are a fucking abomination, we're having a massively hard time trying to get the fucking laptops to work with smartcard readers, the usb ports get confused (let's not even get into the abortion that is the port replicator on the cradle) and the system ends up dropping the drivers.

Sorry about the imbicile thing, but you really ought to check your facts before you try and shoot someone down... I'd bet that the grandparents home built pcs get tested better than Dells..... mind you we bought a few thousand of those fscking things and I doubt he could keep with that kind of volume... so we're stuck anyway, but the validity of his claim is unchanged. Your standpoint is valid for businesses (but ONLY because of volume... not because of better QA/testing), but home users should give Dell/Gateway a miss.

Me: I don't run windows, I run linux
Them: I've heard about that, can I swing by and see it in action sometime?
    Me: Sure

    ... they see it working

Them: That looks nice, can you install it for me?
Me: Here's a copy of <insert favorite linux distro book here> and a copy of the distribution. Knock yourself out, if you've got any problems after reading this, then let me know
Them: But... I don't want to read all this just to get my computer working!!
Me: Then stick with windows, HAND.

Honestly, there's enough variations on the Linux for dummies that walk you through every fucking step you could ever need to take in setting up and running any distro of linux. For those people who take the few days to at least skim through the book, I'll bend over backwards to help them get the damned distro working (slowly so that they know what's going on and can do it themselves.) For those that can't be arsed to pick up and read a damned manual, they shouldn't be switching over yet anyway. Linux is great, and once configured properly, is better than any version of Windows I've ever played with, but autoconfiguration just isn't there yet.

In short, back to the old argument, linux is ready for the desktop... but only if the people using it can take a few minutes out of their busy days to read a few pages about how the fucking thing works... I never thought that this was asking too much, but apparently it is.

They aren't talking about sequels. They're talking about building a (hopefully) robust game engine, which, will allow them to build a game on top of. The game engine has little to do with the content of the game. If it's a flexible engine, which most are, the "sequel" that you talk of would only be related to the original in that they'd be of the same genre, ie. FPS, RTS, MMORPG, etc...

Things have changed a bit since we were kids, you know, the whole Intarweb thing? Watch the movie thirteen, and go talk to some junior high kids. Kids are finding out about sex from their peers, and media, at earlier and earlier ages. Where once a girl was a slut for even kissing more than one guy in the space of a few weeks, now she's a tease if she doesn't suck a dick on the second date....times change, try to keep up.

And no, I wasn't implying a correlation between those two books and teen pregnancy, simply the underlying fear of talking about sex with your kids that leads to trying to shelter them from ever learning about it until they're "old enough."

By all means keep sheltering them, it's your right to raise your children however you see fit. Simply put though, for those that shelter their kids as much as possible, don't be surprised if that over-sheltering comes back to haunt.

HavenCo also may turn over the results of an AUP violation investigation to law enforcement, other network administrators, or others.

Actually there's a lot of protection. You read part of the site, but not all of it, and you failed to understand exactly what they're saying. Their AUP amounts to the following: "You can't store child porn on our servers, and you can't use our servers and network to send spam." .. ...And that's it. In other words, if I use my super deductive powers and grade sub-par grasp of the english language I can reduce their policy to: We give your data to no one... we even encrypt it all so we can't see it.
