Most laptops can't really take any abuse, I remember a test done a few years ago, by PC magazine I belive, they dropped pretty much all major manufactuers laptops from a height of 3 feet on concrete, they all exploded/shattered whatever. Suffice to say, they aren't designed for abuse, the LCD is very touchy (being made of glass and having a flouecsent tube to light it) and the cases are made of plastic and packed tight. If you are going to abuse the laptop, try and get one that is at least a little tough, Sony makes there cases out of magnesium, which helps (least for stacking stuff on them). Or if you have the extra money get a Panasonic Toughbook.
Radioshack is a ok place to start. I don't mean asking the yahoo's who work there. I mean they used to carry this begginger series on electronics, explained basics of electricity (Ohm's law and such fun things), how to read circit diagrams, how to solder, and how to build basic circuts. There was also a series called like "Engineers Mini-Notebook" or something.
This is where I started when I was a lot younger. I also found that getting a small kit radio that required soldering (not those lame-o snap together ones, but a reall PCB and soldering iron type) helped me better understand what things where and how they went together.
This would honestly be a great convience for me, I spend a lot of time waiting in airports (up to 10 hours a week), and if I could get some decent Internet access I could be more productive and not to mention much less bored. Also it would be nice to get something back for all my airport fees and the outrageous rates they charge to park.
One problem though, anyone considered security? I personally have enough sense to have some rudimentary filter software on my company laptop (ip-chains), but this would be a lot of exsposure for MANY MANY companies, as most of the people travelling with laptops are NON-Tech savvy pointy haired manager/exec types. Anyone have thoughts on that?
Survive at extremely low tempetures. All use some type of method to keep ice crystals from forming in their body tissues. Some int he case of a few species of frog that hibernate at or below freezing simple saturate their body tissues with dissolved sugars, which really would work in humans as it would horribly disrupt or body chemistry. Other animals use differnt types of antifreeze, like these iceworms, and assuming we can find one that isn't horribly toxic to human body chemistry we might just be able to freeze people for later or for space hibernation.
Hasn't this been done with radio for quite some time? Some stations play songs or whatever slightly faster then normal in order to add a couple more commercials throughout the day. There are a couple here in Dallas that I know do it, takes a keen ear to tell, because is the engineer at the station isn't good the pitch will either be higher or the tempo of the songs is just a little off.
I can attest to resume spamming becoming a trend. As of the last month or so I have seen many people, from all over the world spamming resumes to internal Sun mailing lists and personal addresses. Personally I would NEVER hire someone who used this tactic, reguardless of how qualified they are
Personally when I got into star gazing my grandfather gave me a book on grinding and building my own reflector telescope. So for the next few months I did, looking back now it wasn't the greatest telescope, but it meant a lot to me to be seeing Saturns Rings with something I built with my own hands.
It really isn't that diffucult to do, just takes time, and it is pretty cheap too, least compared to shelling out 500 bucks for a 3.5 inch reflector.
There are a lot of other issues to work out. Ovaries and such aren't something that is necessary and honestly aren't the most complex organs (groupings of cells/eggs/support cells, but not really any major vascular nerve systems etc etc). That and we already know that eggs can be frozen. If this test had been done with a kidney or possibly the actually womb it might be more impressive. But my guess is that the kidneys and other higher organs are far too complex to be frozen and transplanted.
Though I am only an Engineer with a Biology Degree and by no means an expert, any experts/more qualified person want to comment?
I have had nothing but problems with Verisign, they are a monopoly of sorts and know it, and generally treat their customers like dirt. Not only that but they charge 35 bucks a year for a domain, about twice what everyone else charges, and you don't get any value add services for that extra cash, unless you count the weekly Verisign SPAM fest you get, even if you opt out of their newsletter, which is SPAM too.
Personally I would like to see another class action against Verisgin (I belive there was or is currently one going on). The government has given them too much power and they simply abuse it. Buying the.tv domain is just another sign of the times.
What is next? The Weyland Corporation running everything?
I guess he doesn't have AC power, and lives deep underground in a large copper box right? Not too many other ways to come close to totally escaping EM, the above would be one of the few true ways.
Why does he expect it to sell for more then the Blue Book Nada value for the car (I garnered this from his 100,000 buy it now option and who knows what the reserve price is). Suffice to say John Romero really must be sorta full of himself, least in my opinion, if he thinks someone is foolish enough to pay almost twice the value of the car just cause he drove it?!?!?!?! Sure it has a new engine and updated body? But my question is what happened to the old engine? Then again what am I saying, I have met the guy a couple times and in my opinion he is full of himself.
I think you are slightly confused. The formation of corporations protects you from liability (generally from poor workmanship, shoddy products, issues with what was done, stuff like that). It does not however protect you from criminal acts. For example:
Using your company/Bank to get kickbacks and/or insider trading.
Don't you remember the Savings and Loan scandle of the 80's? People did jail time for that, maybe not the responsible people, but that is another story.
Why do the rich just get fined? Shouldn't somebody do some serious jail time for this? Or are the Swiss and those working for them immune to punishment. I mean this is no where near the buying gold boullion from Jew teeth. But this whole rich people doing whatever they want and only getting a slap on the wrist (well comparitvely, if I did something like this I would end up in prison for a long time). Who knows.

Microflyers on Mars

Here, this is a much better link with information on the entire system in which the microflyers would be used and how they would communicate. Evidently the microflyers are a portion of the proposed mission, other little robots and such would join in for a land/air/etc/etc type team.
Whoever is Moderating replies on this sub, seems quite slanted towards PF. Oh well so much for unbiases media (like that EVER happens anyway anywhere). Guess I will get Trolled for this one.
I have to disagree with you on this one, "almost everyone" on the OpenBSD list might have loved PF, cause it was now their own little baby. But take a look at other lists (ip-filter), people were not happy with PF, last time I tried PF it was NO WHERE near as robust of IPF, as for ease of use, I would disagree there too, the syntax is similar, and IPF ALREADY was damn easy to use (compared to rulesets for CheckPoint or IP Tables or whatever). So step off dude, PF needs work before it can compare with IPF.
I am glad to hear this, as PF is a piece of crap in my opinion. Certain mainters of OpenBSD decieded to take his ball back after an argument, personally I was tempted to NEVER use OpenBSD after that load of BS happened. Suffice to say, Darren knows packet filtering far better then some of the loopy morons working on PF.
Doesn't sound like he really got off, 8 years probabtion, 2000 in restitution and 80 hours of cummunity service?!?!?!?!? Granted it is less then the full sentance but this is far from getting off or being found innoccent. Whats the deal with this administrator? What a freaking assmaster.
Read the entire statement concerning the combo unit, I qualify it by saying it will only work if Dell mounted a 3.5 in a 5.25. Ahhhhh I have to call hypocrite on you for not reading my full response.
Get a dual 3.5/5.25 unit (assuming your floppy is wastefully mounted in a 5.25 bay). Or it sounds like you have a stack of 5.25's, just remove your CD-ROM/DVD for a night or two and copy them all over. Or if you feel you really need to have this 5.25 all the time, either get yourself a long floppy cable to replace your existing floppy cable and a couple of power cable extenders and just run the floppy external. Or find a SCSI floppy, but that might be too hard since I don't think you have any SCSI adapters. Or just get a real computer, you know one without a namebrand on the outside.
As for the question of whether 5.25's are still made, I am sure Teac or somebody still pops out a few 5.25's and if they don't I am sure there are millions upon millions that are disused and availble for a pittance.

I have to say this, has the viewing audience of Slashdot gone so mainstream that it is to this level where "Ask Slashdot" posts are about very very basic hardware and software questions? Whats next? "Where is the Any key" Or "I don't have any memory left in my computer"? "How do I delete files"? "Why does my Windows keep crashing?". FLAME BAIT
This isn't new, print publications have been doing this for years and years, they just always have some fine print somewhere saying "paid advertisement". I think it is dumb and misleading to the less intelligent and insulting to the rest of us. But it certainly isn't a new concept.
Uhhh, this sounds like bunk to me, anyone want to comment. They claim to be doing "Multi Dimensional" encoding:

It has to be totally psychosomatic then, cause an LCD has flourecsent tubes in it, and according to the posted site, they are just as bad as CRT's.
