Some thing we don't want to combine. If a tool does a job, then let it do its own job. Don't try to force another tool to do the same thing.

There are certain things that lend themselves to each other. However, computers and televisions are not two of these things. While they are very similar from a design poiint of view, the way we use these devices is quite different, and so are our demends for these items. I for one would prefer a smaller computer. However, I want a much bigger TV. The main difference seems to be A TV is a passive form of entetainment that several people can enjoy at once, whereas a computer typically only has one user at a time.

Certainly some things should be combined. A PVR and digital decoder can be combined, and these seem to be very popular. It would be nice to also combine these with a television. This does not mean that everything else also makes sense in this respect. My DVD player does not need to be networked. I just want it to play DVDs. If I want to play a DVD on my computer, I'll get a DVD-ROM drive.

We can combine these things. But should we?

The thing is, a lot of devices use FAT. Things like digital cameras and some mp3, and various other devices that can write to a memory card use it. Most of the companies that make these devices can afford to pay.

They will not charge consumers. This is only for people who make devices that use FAT (actually not all of them. Apparently it's only devices that use VFAT with long filenames). VFAT is the defacto standard for interchangeable media. Microsoft developed it Microsoft feel that they deserve some of the preoceeds of their technology. If the manufacturers don't want to pay, they don't have to. They simply won't be able to use their device with windows. Adn they can do this as well simply by using old fashioned FAT with 8+3 character filenames.

That is true. In fact, for its time, the US railroad network was a marvelous piece of engineering.

The problem is that planes become cheaper once distances become sufficiently large. I heard somewhere that railway lines cost several million dollars per mile.

Actually, I've done some research into this while writing. Not a lot of information online, but this one is informative.. Amtrak insist that they carry 10 times as many people per dollar spent on track. And thinking about it, a high spead rail network on each coast will cover a large proportion of the population. Once again, it looks like we need to blame the US government for not considering the environment enough in transport policy, and the people for choosing these politicians.

  21. Re:Impressive on Japanese Train Sets A Speed Record Of 581 kph · · Score: 1

Japan's geography does lend itself to a high speed rail network. In fact, it's hardly a network. The Shankansen tracks simply follow the east coast with one fork branching off. Most of the major cities are built along a fairly direct line.

The US is a huge continent with important cities all over the place. You need a route from all of these to all of these, and rails are expensive to lay and maintain.

Europe should be better. France does have its TGV network, and various other countries might have their own fast rail services, but there's no real European transport policy. Each country just has their own policy. Eusrostar services connect the countries up to an extent, but that really only connects France to neighbouring countries. I agree that it's a shame rail travel isn't more viable. I enjoy travelling by train. The seats are larger than on planes, you can get up and walk around easily, and unlike driving, you can sit and read.
