I think such a "what is the best music sharing tool?" discussion, meight end up in a holy war, because you have at least the Developers of Napster and Gnutella spporting their own tools.
Napster has also an Advantage, they have many registered users using their Tool and Network.
At last but not least there meight be problems with the Law. I think, that we don't know whether it is illegal to offer tools like Napster (even if they are "Free Software").
A one Distribution future would be interesting, but impossible. This Distribution would have to had a flexibility which is IMO not possible, yet.
Maybe there is a future, for one Company one Ditribution, but I wonder: Why is the TurboLinux saying something like this, while selling afaik 4 different Linux distributions (server, workstation,...)?
As far as I know the Processors made by Transmeta simulate the X86 command set.
There are commands which are slower as compared to Intel Processors (I think it was tested with CPU Bench). But the fact is, that this Version of the benchmark wasn't correct. The routines which have been slower are uncommon.
The developers of this Benchmark said, that they will improve this "mistake". I'm not up to day with the Benchmarks, but I think that the emulation of an Instruction set is always asociated with the loose of performance.
I think the ICANN would do well bringing some order in the current 'Domain Chaos' before adding new Domains.
I'll give you some samples. In Germany every Domain has the ending '.de'. In England or Israel you have endings like '.co.uk' or '.co.il' for companies and other endings for other Institutions, which is actually the best Solution and should be used in every country. The U.S. don't even have an own Domain (okay, there is '.us', but there is hardly somebody using it), so they use '.gov' for Government and '.edu' for educational Instituions, which is unfair as compared to other countries.
'.gov' should be available for the UNO, NATO and other similar institutions.
The ICANN must invent a fair system for Domains toface the Future.
Why did the WAP forum want the poor developers to learn a further language? I have no idea.
The technologies designed by the W3C are good enough for cellular phones. CSS (for example) offers a posibility to write Stylesheets for cellular phones.
Switching from WML to XHTML is a good decision, but I thing the WAP-Forum would do well using XHTML from the beginning on.
As long as you have compatibility between Desktop Environments, you do not need an agreement. I'll give you an example: You can run your KDE Applets on the Gnome toolbar.
It's even an advantage not to have always the same toolkits and Desktop environments, because the user/customer can choose the Desktop he likes, without having the need of thinking about compatibility.
In the German anti trust division some people were also thinking about, a trial. But there is no trial yet. The Problem about German Anti Trust Laws is that they are not strict enough as compared to the U.S. A brakeup of a company is AFAIK impossible here(in Germany). There are 2 things the German anti trust division can do:
1. They can force a company to pay some money
2. They can restrict the power of a company i.e. by disalowing them to sell something too cheap.
Another Problem with companies like Microsoft is their position. MS is located in USA and their development work is also done in USA. That's why a European/German trial would/must be completely different from an U.S. trial.
In spite of this I hope us to have such a trial.
On the one hand ZD is also present in Germany (and other contries). But AFAIK fortunatly they do not have the most important magazines and websites here. Even if they will be part of an important news service in USA, there are still other countries where ZD is less important. On the other hand I do not think that sites like Slashdot are just barking dogs. Slashdot (for example) has more influence on Nerds / Geeks / Freaks than cnet and ZD together.
You're right. But new Software is not compatible with old versions.
If we have people writting for DirectX8, they can't run this software on older DirectX versions. THe question is what DirectX version are the Wine APIs based on?
I think they are based on older DirectX versions.

Yes. Netscape was afaik the first company doing this.

I think the point is, that there are not many news sources at all.

I think the Release is something everybody can look forward to. It also shows that OpenSource is not only Linux.
I'm looking forward to new features like the hamburger launcher or quad ketchup.
I think most of the script-kiddies just do not realize that they are destroying other peoples work. It's just like a Game for them.
