  1. The directive on UK Prepares Own Version of the DMCA · · Score: 1

You can download the directive itself as a pdf file from here

In Germany the implementation of this directive is nearly finished. The Government already agreed to it. Now it's up to the parlament to modify it.

  3. Using DMCA would harm Microsoft on X-Box Flaw: MS Won't Use DMCA · · Score: 1

There are several reasons for M$ not to use DMCA. One of the most important is a strategic one.
Microsoft knows, that if they will start using DMCA other companies could follow their example and also start doing this.
This would mean, that Bugs in Software used by other companies wouldn't become as quick known, as they are today, while having bugs in M$ based Software still become known fast. Because Microsoft has a larger user base, and more users means, that there are more people to break DMCA. ;-)

If Microsoft would start to use DMCA, this could result in having the normal user think (some already do), that MS Software is the only vulnerable to security flaws.

Some of my friends at the Socialdemocratic Party of Germany (it's the party of our current Chancellor) started with Knoppix as their first Linux distribution and are really happy with it.
They were especially happy, that they didn't have to install anything. After seeing and using Knoppix this people are usually less preoccupied towards Linux, which is quite important, since the German government wants to force the use of Open Source Software.

As far as I recall one of ESRs objectives in designing CML2 was to make the configuration process more intuitive. Some people even questioned here to include this into their projects. So I ask myself how configuration systems should look like in future.

Regarding desktop Systems there are quite a few things the Users seem to want:
    • Fast configuration
    • Ease of use
    • Similar configuration mechanisms for all Aps

Some of these points were met by Automake/Autoconf/Make in our todays Apps, but there is a further point, a clear structured development. This is something, which was not possible with Automake/conf and make, because you had several levels, which could be affected by errors.

I haven't had the time to investigate CML2, but some people seem to believe it to meet this needs. after having most Linux distributions have unique Package Management by now, we might have reached a point which enables us to realise the need of unique and clear configuration Systems in all OpenSource Software.

How does our society determine who to trust?
I think the answer is, as some peoplee said, that it is able to make sure, you can control them. Lenin said: 'Trust is good. Control is better.' He was mostly wrong but concerning society he was right.
Open Source Software is the only kind of software, which can be proofed, by everyone, so that nobody would have to fear manipulation. It might sound paranoid, since manipulation is hardly a danger to rich countries, but the point is, that it has to be paranoid to ensure the stability of a state and it's society.

  11. The U.S. Law system on Rootkit Developers And Legal Liability · · Score: 2

According to my last experience, the U.S. law system makes the manufacter of a thing responsible for its 'danger' (i.e. The trial about hot coffee in McDonald's). This might seem stupid to us europeans and maybe it really is.
The point is, that making the development of rootkits illegal, would introduce many new problems to Administrators, because people who are interested in breaking in would still find a way.
Another point is, thast such a decision wouldn't affect the net. Lists like Bugtraq would move to Europe or Asia and that would them turn into legal lists.
The problem is, that people posting exploit code to this lists would have to fear (by visiting the USA) the persecution by U.S. Law and U.S. Justice, which turns out to be unpleasant.

  16. The future of Free Software. on NewsForge 'Previews' GPL3 · · Score: 1

How does the future of Free Software look like? To answer this Question we need to answer the question what Software actually is. We have things which everybody just called Software in the Past, like PHP Scripts and ASP Services. And we have some completely different, new Business Modells for Software. Some years ago you just had your Tools and some libraries. Today you have often component oriented Software(development). So you have new questions like:
Is a Software free if some of it's coomponents are free.?
The different kinds of Software are not the only problem the guys at GNU will have to solve. Internationalization is also a problem (i don't mean the internationalization of software). How can you make sure the new GPL will work in all countries around the world. This countries have different Copyright Laws, with different backgrounds.
RMS & the Lawyers of Free Software have a difficult task to solve, because there are many new aspects descibing the word free software.

People often answer Linux, because this is the most common alternative platform. They say this even if they know nothing about Linux. Because some guys in TV Shows said, that Linux is the Best OS.
That's why there are people knowing nothing about Linux, but loving it.

  18. Should we pay attention to this? on Gartner Group Squints At Future OS Growth · · Score: 2

I think we shouldn't pay attention to the figures released by the Gartner group. Why?
Because you can't aim a prediction strictly at the business side. The business side depends on the customers opinion and the customers(most of them love Linux) opinion is not easy predictable. Maybe Linux is not as userfriendly as it should be, but this is a question of time and another issue.
Predictions of companies like Gartner are also quite dangerous, because Gartner (or other Companies) may support special companies and try (with their predictions) to take influence on the market.

There are also some differences on the Web between microsoft.com and microsoft.com/germany. Knowing this, I think, that there might be some problems for MS Germany and Richard Roy, CEO of MS Germany, who will propably have some problems within next days, problems with Microsoft in USA and problems with the customers worldwide.
