Although the article shows some similarity between the two industries. And how one could look back at the demise of the MOD'd car and assume a similar scenario is plausible, I don't see this as the case. Computer systems in general aren't going to get locked down faster than the hacking community can adapt. I just don't see it happening.
First, most of the engineers and developers working at the corporate level are touting the Open Source model to their management or atleast making it known that they have a preference for said technologies.
Second, as one industry tries to lock something down, it ends up blowing back in their faces as Hackers/Crackers/insiders get into un/official teams and tear it apart!( i.e. DVDs,encrypt'd CDs, CueCats, satellite hacking, phone freaking,etc..)
Third, corporations are slowly seeing the benefit to launching their products from the base of pre-existing technologies versus reinventing the wheel.
Just a rant..I'm sure their are some holes to be discovered.. *QH wraps up in fire resistant blanket*
This is obviously not a Microsoft sponsored race! Damn Universities! Don't you know you're suppose to get prior approval from Microsoft before you do such things??
*QH picks up the red Microsoft phone on his desk* QH: Bill...We have a situation. The free thinkers are at it again...
Yahoo? intentionally sensationalized the entire report. You have to read a few lines before you realize this isn't about finding part of Atlantis.
Read CNN's review of the information (which has a pic BTW) for a better understanding of what the discovery is really about (hydrothermal vent communities...Specifically..A whole new type!!)
Yahoo?, Why didn't you just stick to search engines??
I shorted out my keyboard from drooling over those pics and specs! Ratface! You should have a disclaimer before linking to kewl pics like that! *chuckles*
Dang, now I have to setup my/. account on another system.... If I could only remember my/. password... Hmm..
The way I figured it, if they can make watches that can act as a GPS, remote control, phone, or camera. Why not wait for the really kewl tricked out PDA's. The way the competition is going, it's just a matter of time til they roll it all up into one sweet lil PDA!
BTW, I also want soap bars with disposable clocks in them to tell me just how late I am getting to work.
I'm not buying a PDA until it can act as a PIM, Instant Messenger, email client for all of my accounts, act as a phone with my choice of service provider, Allow me to hack da hell out of it (linux of course!) and allow for various plugins like GPS, camera and removable media.
I've been working on adding a small feature to one of our ActiveX wrappers and what a f#$king pain in the ass. (Can I say 'Ass'??) If I had done it in Java the first time, this won't have been nearly so 'problematic.'
BTW? Anyone know how to add a 'Menu' to an ActiveX object??
MS's MSDN does a poor job at best when it comes to answering my questions. Java's documentation is much better IMO. And LinuxDoc.org is even better.
Unfortuantely they can't. It appears that MS took out a patent back in 1995 for their blue screens and GPF errors. They could port an auto-without-warning-reboot module though?
I smell an Open Source GPL'd grassroots project in the making!
Like most companies, the amount varies (currently 2k/yr must be a 'B' or better.) BUT! If you leave the company w/ in 1 year after having taken the class you are required to pay the company back! (Not a bad idea, prevents employees from getting training and running to better job once they have the Certs.)
This current policy seems to work pretty well for our company.
Your a step ahead of me! That's an excellent idea! I'm sure alot of folks would bitch and moan about it, and even some might try to sue for 'Patching' their crappy system, but I think w/ enough Press & claiming the 5th under 'Good Samaritain act', you could probably get away w/ it (and boy could you imagine the movie deals?? the books?? interviews??....Wow..Makes me ALMOST want to put my beer down and do it..ALMOST..ROFL!)
The one question I have after reading it is, why didn't he take the time to learn what the upload & run commands were to upload a patch to the dang zombies that would then UNINSTALL THE INFECTING PROGRAM?!!. He already did all the hard work on sniffing the packets, catching the passwords, and figuring out which irc channel they were logging into. He could have just as easily issued a simple command that would have uninstalled the.exe. Still, a very good article though...SG rocks...
I thought I saw a IBM-Employee Clan of Dwarves splat'n Pixies for their dust in greater Faydark! Or did they buy it over on eBay?? along with their BloodForge armor??
I've noticed this problem for sometime, I'm starting an organization/open source project that will collect miles of string and old soup cans/ empty coffee cans to help alleviate the ever increasing problem of downed routers. More information will follow.
How wonderous that Intel would develop and release a chip that is self throttling in its favor. Why don't they release the chips as P7's and tell us "while not being used it's the fastest CPU on the planet!, but under strain, it throttles down to a 486 speed to avoid heat stress..."
I'll take two please!
I'm surprised they haven't used buzz words like 'Smart chip' or 'Evolution Technology!'
I'd love to see the stats on that one 5 years from now.
Out of 500 geeks that were up to the change:
30 eaten by predators
120 killed due to civil unrest
46 killed while traveling in 60yr old planes
100 in prisons as political POWs
54 Outlaws due to DMCA warrants for their arrest
100 captured and sold as tech slaves
47 stoned to death cause they were confused for a US citizen
1 stayed (no one left to compete for bandwidth!!)
Where do I sign up?!!
Nevermind. E-Data's got that one too...

If anyone who was coding in another language, would you please leave your keys and badge with the security desk by the front door.
*QH hands them two boxes*
And please clear out your desk. We'll miss you.
*Intern walks up*
Can I have your chair?

You a teacher? probably of preschoolers...

Crap, if they do...I want royalties!!
p.s. I'll be selling raffle tickets on who gets to throw the switch 1/2 hour before he gets 'juiced'.
Feel free to bring the neighbors!
