If you've never seen this film, The Corporation is a documentary covering the history of how corporations came to exist and their roles in society today.

This film begins by conducting a psychological prognosis of a corporation, where they find it's condition is of a psychopath.

It was shown on the Canadian equivalent of PBS.

So here's oddly enough a bittorrent download of the 3 part series.

If anyone is asking for more proof, I think this film will provide it for them. Otherwise, I still found watching this film to be very informative.

I got my first 'real' computer when I was 13 years old ..... what perfect timing. :-)

    No computer.

Saved money for 2 years to purchase my first computer.

    If computer, no net connection.

I traded porn and warez via floppy disks with friends of mine who had BBS connections. I saved up and bought a modem a few months later.

If computer and net connection, then computer is in parent's bedroom, locked.

My parents tried that one on me. They left me alone in the house, and I learned to pick locks from a PHRACK like howto I downloaded off the net before they put it in their room.

If computer and net connection and computer in living area, password-protected access.

This yields to an ugly battle of wits and technological superiority. I learned to get around the BIOS password within a day. Just called up the company that built the computer.

If computer and net connection and computer in living area and no password, check under the bed and look for the loaded pistol.

My parents gave up by this point and just let me take the computer into my room w/ my net connection. :-)

If parents are stupid and/or ignorant, the children will suffer.

I hardly suffered, I learned a lot out of my parent's ignorance of technology. I can only thank them for providing so many barriers to defeat. :P

  7. Some more disinfo...... on When Think Tanks Attack · · Score: 4, Informative

    From the article:

"As unlikely as this might seem to the skeptic, the National Security Agency (NSA), that coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. information systems and produce foreign intelligence information, made the folly of developing GPL-licensed code to improve the Linux operating system. After reading the terms of the Linux GPL, the NSA realized they needed to post this enhancement to the Internet in source code form for the world to see. Unbelievably, any person with a PC and an Internet connection can now logon to the NSA?s website and print out the blueprint for NSA s Security Enhanced Linux software."

This is just wrong. NSA had no requirement to distribute the source since they were using it all in house. But since the people who work at these places are on the mission of creating disinformation, they obviously would ignore this:

    From http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/info/faq.cfm:

"Does NSA favor open source software?

NSA initiatives in enhancing software security cover both proprietary and open source software, and we have successfully used both proprietary and open source models in our research activities. NSA's work to enhance the security of software is motivated by one simple consideration: Use our resources as efficiently as possible to give NSA's customers the best possible security options in the most widely employed products. The objective of the NSA research program is to develop technologic advances that can be shared with the software development community through a variety of transfer mechanisms. NSA does not favor or promote any specific software product or business model. Rather, NSA is promoting enhanced security."

It seems to me that NSA's intentions and reasons can be inferred from that above statement quite easily. But if these think tanks are being used solely for propaganda then I'm not all that surprised.

There's several cases where software failure has been fatal.

How about the case of the THERAC-25, where several died or were seriously injured.

This is a typical case study shown in any ethics course involving software design. It turns out the cause of the severe radiation burns was from the operator entering commands and parameters faster than the unit could handle.

Then there's the Soviet pipeline that blew up due to delibrately buggy software stolen from the US.

Then there's the Osprey , had software bugs that killed 30 Marines in 3 accidents.

There's also 2 commercial jet crashes due to software problems with either radar, or just reporting position properly to the pilot, killing over 300 people in the 2 accidents.

This problem is very real. So when people joke about getting a BSOD while driving a car, it's highly plausable.

When I worked tech support I attempted to reduce the required number of steps by removing redundant troubleshooting. Upon hearing that the customer is relatively competent in what they're doing I would skip the bullshit. I always sat at the borderline of getting fired for just not following policy. It was fun knowing that within 1 year the job would not matter. :-)

Even if I tried to follow the guidelines I would change simple questions like:
"Do you have it plugged in?"
    to a
"I assume you have it plugged in...." with the customer, when realizing their dumbassedness would reply "Well whatcha' know ... I did forget to plug it in!".

It makes them happy when they figure things out on their own without telling them to do anything. :-)

To make things clear, management came down on me even over happy customers. Customers who even had written letters of appreciation! :-) I didn't give them anything for free, I did't give out 'confidential' information, I just skipped 'Basic' troubleshooting steps.

So your broad sweeping generalizations are absolutely unfounded.

If you would like, I could bring up numerous factual examples of those who practice Christianity reacting in "frightful outrage" towards those who have different beliefs.
