It was OK to spend an extra $150 on a neato case and an extra $100 on a quiet, overpowered PS (and $30 on rounded cables!) but money couldn't be found to buy the best available processor?

But it has taken us 50+ years to get to this point with synchronous circuit design and binary logic. It would take many years to get to this point using totally new technology, and in the meantime the current computer industry would continue to grow exponentially. What we need are examples of this infringement. If people saw what the IP hegemony could do to you if we gave them carte blanche to protect their "rights" then they might stop feeling guilty for "condoning piracy" and start feeling proud about supporting individual rights.

I agree, and the reason is because Windows practically defines the desktop computer paradigm. Another OS may eventually grab the lead in desktop share from Microsoft, but it will only happen when the desktop paradigm is no longer so dominant.

However I think it is very likely that the desktop paradigm will soon be replaced by a multitude of embedded platforms with simpler task-specific user interfaces. Now that serious computing power is cheap enough to put into cars, MP3 players, palmtops and phones embedded systems will become more and more important.

And Linux has a real chance in that environment. Embedded systems must be flexible, reliable and cheap and Linux fits the bill.
