    If I had known about McMadsat I would have been sorely tried deciding which to go to - though Newcastle is 100 miles closer.

    Ah, but Rowling said she didn't know she was writing a fantasy story, as if HER use of witches, wizards, goblins was new and novel and worthy of some special protection. Neither Tolkien nor Pratchett said that: Pratchett himself said that there is a huge pool of ideas that a sensible author dips into, contributes, and returns - TP is promoting open source authoring !

    Well yes, but it comes down to that investment thing. A TGV train can do "Chicago - San Francisco" in 6.5 hours. And it would be a damned sight more pleasant that the airline experience these days.

    The BEST small diesel in the world is currently I believe Ford's lovely little DuraTorq engine - and you aren't allowed to buy it in the USA - we get 60 MPG (UK) without trying, at 70MPH freeway speeds.

    My father remembers as a schoolboy around then visiting the laboratory at Manchester, and asking how it made noises. IIRC he says they were actively loading the system clock and making it slow down or speed up depending on how much work it was doing driving circuit elements.

    Spider silk has been synthesised, and there are genetically modified goats that secret spider silk proteins in their milk. Strength to weight wise, spider silk is comparable to Kevlar.
