Yeah there's other articles on slashdot about it but heck, you haave to admit that its cool that the e-paper technology is coming along instead of becoming vaporware ( ok it still can but at least its still progressing! ) Yes, people are still going to want their paper copies because they need the FEEL of paper.. cant suppress your lifelong concept of what a book FEELS like!
Maybe its time for a change, with this coming out then maybe we wouldnt have to give the students laptops when this would suffice, since its a source of information that can hold (I'm assuming more than just one book?? Pretty please?!?!) quite a bit of information and teachers can know that teh students are getting enough information to do their article and parents will know their kids arent looking at p0rn ( well y'know.. kids are bound to hack this thing and put p0rn on it but at least give the parents some peace of mind for a little while:-) )
So dont complain about previous articles.. jsut be happy the technology is progressing..

How long did prohibition in the uhh 1930s (I believe?) to be repealed? I'm hoping that DCMA will be repealed in the same amount of time or at LEAST in less time than that.. since it pretty much comes up to the same level of ignorance that it took to create the same law..
Will the consitution be able to be upheld in the future if this mess keeps happening? Seems like money is starting to control what our freedom means instead of the IDEAL of freedom..

Well, apparently now you cant run to your car to hide from all that spam you get from the USPS and your email and your AOL email.. They've now got you! you go camping with your car, you're still going to get spammed.. seems to me that they've got every corner of the earth to be now non-spam-free.. unless you do go hiking into the wilderness.. but heck.. maybe they've got some trees hooked up to the net so you'll be spammed in the wilderness now too!

Well all of you complaining that you need the tactile feedback and the clicking noise generated by it.. well think about this.. its QUIET so that means you can use it during class ( if youre a student ) so you could have your palm and this and be able to take notes on your palm quietly and not bother anybody else ( granted you'll look a little silly and probably have a coupla more errors in your typing than usual ) but its a nice data input device that will be able to type anyplace.. Plane sound good? dont have enough room in your seat to type with a full sized keyboard so this will work quite nicely.. its also compact so its easy to lug around too..
So I dont think all this bitching is warranted, granted you're going to have to have a keyboard layout in your head to type accrately and get used to typing without visual cues.. and if this is all its supposed to be then it'll be a very cool and useful thing..
Also about say, 20k horny couples will take this as a romantic moment to go outside and peruse romantic interests, aka necking. Headlines in the newspapers will read: World record broken for numbers of couples necking simultaneously!
But seriously, should be a cool event to watch for the people that'll get hte best views of it.. altho I'd have the people with movies like Deep Impact refrain from watching it during the event;-)
On the other hand, movie theaters that base their movies on horror flicks should defnitedly show movies with meteoric impacts..

Kids can hack it even easier! I mean nowdays most kids are smarter than their parents on the computer.. so if its going to be self-regulating.. that means the parents will try to regulate it themselves but of course its going to end up being regulated by the kids that they're suppsosedly trying to block beause the KID is going to be on the computer MORE than the parents so chances are they're going to figure out ways to circumvent it..
If you notice near the top of the article they say mention the worms that have hit M$.. Nimda and Codered were among the ones mentioned.. They didnt release the code for these worms.. the worms themselves GIVE the code to the people who didnt patch their IIS.. so its not the security people's fault.. it's M$'s fault for having the hole open in the first place..

Palm has a nice GRPS modem out.. seems like anybody with a decent palm and the modem within a area that is accessible by GRPS would be quite happy except if they cant afford the service.. I for one wouldnt mind being in a Cafe and whipping out my Palm and looking up the current movie listings for teh area I'm in and be able to find a decent movie that I want to watch..
that idea was answered in the slashdot FAQ, basically they dont do that because they would have to get the permission of the authors, and would be at risk for copyright violation and so on and they'd have to be worried about keeping the cache up to date.. so they just link to it..
also they dont cache it because some of the site owners earn money by people seeing the site so the cache would take money away from them.. you know those dorky banner ads actually do make money when people see them so thats why a cache is also a bad idea.. they need to make money.
WHy doesnt the government just stick with their original ideas and go with the original punishment instead of having to brainstorm new ones that are just plain too cheap.. their new ideas for punishment seems like a slap on the wrist compared to what the original idea would have cost microsoft.. SUre they would have lost money but at least there'd be more of a basis of competition after the conclusion of a splitup..
Now seems to me that the government is getting its foot in the mouth because they're trying to impose more stupid laws, DCMA isnt doing much, MPAA is being a lecherous bulldog, and now they're trying to figure out how to make a law thats fair? shouldnt they just work on repealing their laws that arent working.. they should have enough experience in repealing their dumb laws like Prohibition back in the 40's.. I'll admit that its cool that they're coming up with electronic paper solutions to replace wooden paper, while they'll be a hell of a lot easier to lug around with just one sheet of electronic paper vs 500 sheets of wooden paper in a book, there's still the issue of wether it will have the same rights as the wooden version..
I for one would like to be able to share my books wooden or electronic.. We've seen the problems that come with the electronic version, for example, the E-Book.. Whats to make it so that the companies dont put more restrictive limitations on the eletronic paper version? Once htey get past those issues and it becomes as common and cheap as the wooden version then heck yeah I'll buy it, but until then, and until they get electronic paper to have the same rights as the wooden version, I'm not going to touch it with a 6 foot stick..

With all the different OS's coming out with various different things in it, like beOS, Debian, and so on having different things to be supported within it.. wont that split the support even further apart? I've got to admit that its cool that they're still making new OS's and having different features in it but there's also the inherent problem of supporting it.. Will this OS get enough support from people nowdays that are coming from picking their OS from a wide range of currently available ones? Windows.. DOS ( does anybody actually use it anymore? ).. Mac.. Linux.. and all of the distributions.. BSD.. Solaris.. and so on..
I know there's a hell lot more of different OS's out there so shouldnt there be some kind of standard set now so that support would be easily gotten across a wider range of platforms?
Yeah, first you learned architecture from it, then you decided to go for the, "I am death, I am the destroyer of worlds" kind of thing?

I'm curious.. maybe I missed it someplace, but why are they refusing to sell the linux kit outside of japan? Is there some sort of thing in it that makes it so that its not distributable or something?
AH yes but at least the ENTIRE system wont go down now will it? compared to a blue screen where you just are tempted to kick the crap out of the computer.. now all you have to do is run the program again, as I said, they'd have to learn what to do with a command prompt!
Well at least this way, you wont hear the airline people saying, " Well sir! We're sorry but we had a scheduling screwup because some sort of blue screen came up then the computer just crashed! Honest! Your flight is cancelled! ".. now you'll just hear " Your flight is on time sir! You can board in 5 minutes "
Ah gotta love them switching over to Linux, maybe now more airlines will see how they can avoid their scheduling computers crashing now.. I've seen too many computers at the check-in desk crashing but on the other hand, I'm pretty sure the check-in people wont know what the heck to do if they saw a command prompt.. "Uhh theres a word.. 'bash' with an pound sign next to it.. whats that mean?"
I suppose next they'll have to educate the masses on how to use Linux but hey, at least they'll be more reliable now!

The Paper copy is better than the E-Book nowdays for quite a few reasons, for one, you can finish the paper copy and pass it on to a friend to read also without worrying that you're going to infringe on a copyright. Paper copy is YOURs to use and is freely distributable by YOU since you bought it, you just cant resell it but you can give it to a friend to use, you can copy a section to stick on your wall. With all that said, why the heck would you want to buy a E-book and get all the troubles that come with it, you cant copy it, you cant pass it on to another friend to read, you cant ( as far as I know ) donate it to the library..
Until the people who make these E-Books face up to the fact that people want the same rights that they get with their paper copy, the E-book is never going to be as popular. I sure as hell want my book to be mine and I want to be able to give it to a friend to read and enjoy too!
The blocking of websites in high schools is stupid, for a few reasons being that most people in high school are smart enough to know that you shouldn't be looking at porn in the classroom or the lab because you'd get your ass busted, and from my personal experience.. My teacher tells me to research about the effect that the atomic bomb had on japan.. takes us to the computer lab which is hooked up the the internet of course.. and gee.. most sites I tried to go to from yahoo were blocked by the goddamned proxy.. I go home to finish researching it, I go to the same sites.. there was NO porno in it, there was NO profanity.. it was a straight research page about Oppenhimer..
My suggestion: GET RID OF THE FUCKING THING out of high schools.. maybe make it better and stick it in the 6th grade classrooms where they're teaching sex ed.. that's where its most needed.. but HIGH SCHOOL!?!? We're the voting age and we know better..
