Already Pentium-class machines are being junked rather than sold
Quite true. Me and a friend have made a habit of picking up the junked stuff from a local computer shop and scavenging parts. (Anybody want to buy a 102MB hard drive?) We've gotten several WORKING Pentium-based systems, even a machine with a 233 MMX-enabled chip (the chip works, he's using it, the machine itself is quirky, so we'll probably toss it), and hard drives as big as 2GB. (I currently have a 2GB that I got for free in a 133Mhz pentium system that I got for $5... running slackware 9)
And thus you can set up a very usable system (links is awesome!) using only scavenged parts. You just have to know where to scavenge. (Never mind that building a PC in the gigahertz range is only a couple hundred anyway... free is better!)
1. They scale up to at least 1GB (the USB drives you idiot) 2. You can fit about 320 JPEG images weighing in at around ~95 KB into 32MB (I padded for FS overhead) 3. PROFIT!
I'm too lazy to copy and paste, you insensetive clod!!!
Here's how to make a link: (this works in either Plain Old Text or HTML Formatted slashdot posting modes, I'm posting this in Extrans so you can SEE the tags)
"these things" didn't mean jet fighters in general. I didn't read the article (this is slashdot, after all) so I didn't bother with the exact model number.

IMNSHO, it's basically common knowledge that these things CAN NOT be flown without computers regulating all the doohickeys. We're not talking about Cessnas (sorry if I spelled that wrong), we're talking about extremely complex jets flying at high speeds.
Granted, some things (ejector seats, cupholders, maybe even bomb-dropping aparatus) don't need computer control, but all those wing flaps and engines, etc. do, at least in a vehicle this complex.
Your wish has been granted: Your system is a joke!
Me, of course, speaking as a hypocrite, considering I have 3 old PCs under the 200Mhz mark. And I'm still waiting for my Athlon XP & mobo to come back. Thankfully, I'm not a big gamer.
And my PowerBook G4 is 667Mhz, with 512MB of RAM. (Full specs in my user bio, if you care) But I find it comforting that I get twice the number of keys/sec on distributed.net's RC5-72 project than my friends tricked-out gaming system with a 2.53Ghz P4.
I got Slackware 3.2 running (complete with monochrome X windows) on a 25Mhz 386 laptop with an 80MB hard drive, a DEC something-or-other. Did the whole floppy thing. The stupid thing couldn't run anything newer than that, kernel incompatibility or something.
I now have a few different PCs of various vintage that I'm trying to get running with Slackware 9.0.
I'm a die hard slacker, but man alive, who in their right mind would try to run KDE on less than a pentium? And why is everything using only -O2, instead of -O3?
I've written replacement build scripts for a few packages, but I haven't had the time to release them and all.
(entire post encapsulated in sarcasm tags) I haven't paid an internet bill for the past 12 months due to this. In fact, I have 2 wireless cards that connect to two different networks so I'm actually faster than most people who do pay. Suckers.
On behalf of the people of Slashdot: We hate you. And the fact that you use evil hotmail is a sure sign you are a 1337 script kiddie who is obviously way too confident in his h4x0r skillz. I bet you're like "W00t, I got TWO frickin' wireless cards! I 0wnz these homies!"
I curse you with my gym shoes! I hereby prophesy in the name of Murphy and his most high law, the neighbors whose networks you're freeloading off of will move away within one year! Do not laugh in the face of DESTINY!
Oh wtf, I might as well just admit that I'm jealous as heck of ya.
Yeah, I agree! Even if you can't run an FTP server on the OS 9 and winXP machines (I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just guessing there's no bundled FTP server), FTP is bi-directional, so it shouldn't be too bad.
OR you could just add WebDAV to Apache on either the Linux or OS X machine and be done with it all.
A small Apple? How's an Apple IIc+?

....the very first use of "Let's Rock and Roll!" as an idiom for getting started. .tsop tsriF
I recently bought a 4GB for $10. Not too bad.
You REALLY just want to get all that hot porno and wares and MP3z!!! We can see right through your story! I bet it's "seminal research" too.....
Clearly, the solution is to download MPGs, QuickTime MOVs, and MP4 video files. I hear they're biodegradable!
Oh my OGG, I hope I don't have to take too much FLAC for this comment.
Oh yeah, why don't they just remake "Don't copy that floppy" into "Don't copy that betamax" and air that?
The mice have gone crazy? Oh rats!
>>LIKE, WHAT-EVERRR!!
I still fail to understand why you'd want PPC linux rather than X86 Linux
Three words: distributed dot net.
Them 970s are gunna spew keys out faster than a freakin' beowulf cluster of P4s or Athlons!
Must go check my stats now....
Dude, it's official! Apple confirms: Mac OS 9 is dead! Deader even than *BSD! Don't you remember the whole coffin thing?
Sheez. It's like saying "I bet D3 won't run on windows 95!"
(Entire post tongue-in-cheek; too much peanut butter)

10 years later, and still compiling for the 386!
How's that for improvement?

I sit informed.
Just make your own fortunes.dat. It's not hard.
I knew somebody would reply with something like this, that's why I said "I'm not saying it's impossible, etc..."
Is that only in XP Pro, or is it also in Home? He didn't say which version he has.
Yeah, it's not like they're actually capable of adding said functionality to 2.4.x themselves.
(I'm in a sarcastic mood today.)
