    The Internet is just a collection of computers hooked together. Without interaction, "the Internet" doesn't do very much. Google is a tool because it searches the information on all of those computers for me. It performs work. No, it doesn't move atoms around like a hammer. But in the same way my browser is a tool, OpenOffice is a tool, and iChat is a tool, Google is a tool.

    In the same way that everybody knows that there is no banker in Africa who randomly picked them out of a hat to receive $20 million from a deceased person they never heard of.

    I know that the problem has been fixed in -current, but I run a production box that I refuse to bring up to -current. There's no patch or even a mention of this problem on the errata page.

    But what if somebody is expecting a call about a life-threatening situation? I don't begrudge any emergency room doctor from seeing a movie, but I want their phone to ring if they're needed back at the hospital to put me back together.

    The part about "on penalty of perjury" refers to claim that the person sending the letter, usually a lawyer, represents the injured party. It has nothing to do with the contents of the letter. Check out 17 USC 1202 for the details.

    you'll probably be working for a large firm that can afford forensics tools that cost tons of cash and do much more advanced forensics analysis than the forensics software for Linux.

    If I'm working for a cash rich company, why can't I use the free toolkit and pocket the extra money set aside for "tools"?

    There is a special case of the GPL to allow for US Government submissions. Check out these questions from the GPL FAQ for more information.

    This isn't a worry in the United States. According to 17 USC 105, works of the US Government are not eligible for copyright protection.

    Thus, all of the code written by government employees for government business, if released to the public, is public domain.

    I've given several conference presentations and briefings and seen a few changes in technology. Those changes, however, have not created anything new in the lecture hall, however. Those people who are going to pay attention to every word I say are still going to do so. Those people who drift off into their own world now can save the effort of daydreaming and surf the web/chat instead.

    As for meaningful discussion via backchannels, I have yet to see it in action. The audience members would have to communicate beforehand to set up the channel, I suppose. Maybe if the somebody, to include the speaker, set up a chat room for everybody to join, you could get a useful quorum of people...
