    because although the European phone market is (like all other markets in the real world) plagued with cartels there is some competition.

    Perhaps you meant that T-Mobile is the closest thing the U.S. has to a European phone carrier. Wonder why?

    I was about to say, I pay $2 to $4 a bag for that stuff to put on my blueberries, blackberries, etc. Better yet: use human waste for lawns, fields and golf courses.

    As far as I know, no United States carrier has made an S60 phone its flagship offering, at least not the way AT&T has marketed the iPhone.

    Have you never heard of Carterfone? Once upon a time AT&T was a big evil monopoly that told you what phone you were allowed to use. Now that monopoly is gone, but you behave like it's still there.

    I bought smartphones before Android was around.

    They ran Symbian.

    Since the iPhone is hardly a smartphone I never thought of buying one.

    I can't actually run it on my phone, because I haven't gotten over my righteous indignation at the idea that I'm supposed to tithe $100 to Captain Steve before I'm allowed to test out the program I wrote on the phone that I bought. I imagine I could manage it if I jailbroke my phone first, but the last time I did that it destabilized it a lot and I had to re-install.

    Untrue. They built a HTML engine, webkit, on a (L)GPL project, khtml, and so were required to release their modifications.

    Their browser, Safari, is closed source.

    Of course it isn't what happened, they were driving through their neighbourhood, (taking their children to school) didn't see or even hear any fighting (the apaches were over a kilometer away) and found some wounded people. They tried to help. Then they got shot. What battle?
