Arthur C. Clarke once said, "If you understand 2001 completely, we failed. We wanted to raise far more questions than we answered."
The following was Kubrick's reponse to Clarke's comments. This was taken from an interview he gave to Playboy. I think the myth that it was supposed to be confusing has gone on too long.
"I don't agree with that statement of Arthur's, and I believe he made
it facetiously. The very nature of the visual experience in 2001 is to
give the viewer an instantaneous, visceral reaction that does not --
and should not -- require further amplification. Just speaking
generally, however, I would say that there are elements in any good
film that would increase the viewer's interest and appreciation on a
second viewing; the momentum of a movie often prevents every
stimulating detail or nuance from having a full impact the first time
it's seen. The whole idea that a movie should be seen only once is an
extension of our traditional conception of the film as an ephemeral
entertainment rather than as a visual work of art. We don't believe we
that we should hear a great piece of music only once, or see a great
painting once, or even read a great book just once. But the film has
until recent years been exempted from the category of art -- a
situation I'm glad is finally changing."
Remember that Norm Coleman also was trying to STOP the RIAA from filing all of the John Doe-style lawsuits and whatnot.
Sadly, that is about the extent of his "good guy" behavior. He is a political opportunist of the worst kind, and it makes me sad for the Republican party if this type of guy represents the new generation (Not that the current one has done much for the party).
It's also taught that for aggression to be usefull, it needs to be controlled and directed and timely.
Apparently at my school, "timely" meant in the hallway, in the classroom, in the parking lot, in the locker room, in the bath room, at the party, etc., etc.
As as aside, I have never once in my life been attacked by roving bands of console gamers.
The whole point is that they want to define science in terms of observation and hypothesis testing (reproducible evidence).
I think their whole point is to disguise their hatred of science (which unsurprisingly, even when wrong, sounds much more convincing than their magic mumbo-jumbo) with this stealth campaign. You are very generous in taking them at face value, but I just can't believe it.
And thanks again for doing that. The video was great and it looked fanatastic in high resolution. The bittorrent experience for this was excellent. Plus, the Decemberists kick serious amounts of ass.:-)
"Hopefully with an adequate number of theaters carrying the film, Katsuhiro Otomo's latest opus will gain the exposure it deserves."
Doubtful. The local theatre here has it for only a week, which means that only people who seek this stuff out will get a chance to see it. Word of mouth needs longer than a week to have any kind of chance. Plus, it's at a small art house theatre. These releases seem like more of a preview for the eventual DVD release than anything else.
For most people, it's just a matter of getting used to it. I biked to work today and it was around 5 degrees this morning. I work with a women who bikes home about 15 miles, and she is doing it today. I am in Minnesota, BTW. Yeah, it sucks at first. Start in the summer and then by the time winter rolls around you'll be addicted and wont want to stop.:-) Also, stop by a local bike shop and chat with them about good routes in and out of downtown.
I wonder how many of those 3 million signed up for the service with a new car, but otherwise would not have pursued XM. Plus, if XM goes under, Apple is stuck with a device for something that no longer exists. Digital music files are not tied to a service.
That long ramble of bible quotes gave me an idea. Has anyone ever created a program that will scan a text for bible quotes and site them? Match any string of text in the processed document with any string of text in the bible, say three words or longer? Could be hilarious. Maybe have it start searching the bible at random locations for each attempt just to mix it up.
I assume it is a reference to Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas..
The attorney in the book is Samoan for those who have not had the pleasure.
Seriously, there are women out there that hate diamonds (yes, I know some). Just like there are women out there who vary in almost every other way possible. I do concede that most people seem to have diamonds, but that doesn't mean it's insane to want someone who shares your values, whatever they may be. I guess that was my point.
Plus I like to be self righteous. This is Slashdot, after all.
Or you could find a real-world, emotion-having, NOT-concerned-about-what-idiots-think women who shares your values. Do you really want to spend your life with someone who throws ethics out the window for a sparkly piece of junk?
Limbaugh said he reviewed four different video games and found "no conveyance of ideas, expression, or anything else that could possibly amount to speech. The court finds that video games have more in common with board games and sports than they do with motion pictures."
Wow! Four games and he's got the whole thing figured out? Imagine if someone claimed they had read four books and understood the complete posibility of literary expression. How did this guy graduate from high school, much less law school?
I can't believe either LOTR or ABM were in the running for best adapted screenplay with a film like Ghost World. It was an amazing comic that was perfectly adapted to the screen. It captured all the sadness and beauty of that story without resorting to cheap manipulation (cough...A Beutiful Mind...cough). It's an insanely underappreciated film, and I can't believe it gets no mention on a site supposedly devoted to "nerds".
Check this article on Salon. Perfectly mirrors my thoughts on the Oscars.
I actually had a role playing club closed down at my middle school (this would have been in the late eighties). The administration found a satanic bible in the locker of a student who was not even in the club, but everyone freaked out and blaimed the role players. They brought in some "expert", who advised them to shut down the club, which they did. The funding for the club was diverted to floor hockey (seriously). Man that sucked.

What does this window manager do that Mac OS X's doesn't?
Run on Linux? It's free software?

:-) You are the first person to actually catch that reference.

"I agree" that "apple plugs" into just about anything. "imagine" OS X and you, enabling your digital life!

Well, the US, so definitly not the real world. ;-)

They should really rename that sucker the "Until Miyazaki makes another film, let's just hand it to Pixar" award.

Although I'd like to know the positions Mr. Gore might take, I don't think he has any to give. Check this out:
