You can also double-click a package in some distros, or pick from the list of available packages in a graphical repository browser like Adept. Installing Linux software ia not hard. It actually takes less knowledge than the drag & drop operation which is typical on OS X, when the devs forget to include a directory link to drop the app on.

Exactly who the man is, is never mentioned, but presumably its 'everyone else'.

    So true :(

I'm in a country where the general attitude is that everything should be had for free. I know people well into adulthood who think pirating everything they use and play is the way it should be, and laugh when it's pointed out who they're really stealing from.

I don't care if they're using a cracked Photoshop (I actually *prefer* cheaper or free, simpler tools myself) for home use, but I've seen more than a fair share of companies (beyond the startup phase, too) where there isn't one valid license for any product they use, except MAYBE their computers. If the computers are old enough, they've pirated a version of Vista.

People download games from the usual places "just to try", and say they're going to buy it if they like it. Then they play them all the way through and never spend a penny.

I like the low prices of typical indie games and software, and have lots of impulse purchases as a result. I guess Stardock picked the right name for their new downloader :)

I have a product in mind, which is targetted at groups of people, and I'm thinking I should just give away the core product with its basic features, and leave a lot of functionality on a server with a small monthly fee. It's certainly working for MMO companies, and they even charge for the client software.

I'd make it so that to use even the minimal features, they'd have to go through my server, thereby needing to buy it through me. The entry fee would be low. Pirates would get absolutely no functionality. The online features would be fairly simplistic without a subscription, and buying one basically rents space and other goodies.

It's possible to beat them if you add something extra that can't be stolen or copied. Not DRM, but actual services.

An installation manifest would be a great addition to the OS X installer program most people use. To at least get rid of preferences for deleted software, I use AppTrap, but that would still leave instruments and whatnot from GarageBand and similar programs.

There's still much repeated data on a Blu-Ray game on PS3, to compensate for slower drives. That cuts a lot of fat, so perhaps a cut-scene heavy game will "only" take 4 discs :)

We could also hope they use the in-game engine for cut-scenes, but this is Squenix, who are way too pre-render happy.

I personally love using KDE and hate Gnome for its minimal configuration options. But I prefer programming Gtkmm/Gnomemm apps or wxWidgets rather than using KDE libs/Qt.

There are no real differences between KDE/Qt and Gnome/Gtk+ apps per se, but the philosophy and style guidelines for each desktop project affect how people implement their interfaces. With the skins and compatibility libs in KDE3, I have to look hard to tell which app is Gnome out of my most used ones.

(Of course, when I am scratching my own itches, it's either Cocoa or PHP these days :)

CD-ROM drives used to have play/pause/skip buttons back in the day. Just power on and stick the disc in. All my first CD and DVD drives had this feature in the previous millennium. Now you need a functioning OS to play discs, for the most part (although the BIOS on at least two of my systems recognise and play discs with MP3s).

I use OS X and KDE3, also. I don't mind the menus. I like the reminder about what OS I am in, though, so I don't mimic that in KDE. The menu also has another purpose: It hints of what program you've currently got in focus. To the right of the apple, there should always be the name of the active program. Most X11 window managers don't actually make things that clear.

What I'd like to have is a file browser as nice as Konqueror or Dolphin in OS X by default. Finder is just too simplistic. Even Windows Explorer feels better.
