Sony may work to change the standard as they have something at stake in the music industry, but Phillips doesn't and thus doesn't care. That's why you don't see "bit accurate" CD copiers advertised by Sony, but you do Phillips.
Very good comment. I'll agree mostly with you, but just bring up a few points.
Okay, if this is going to be the One Source of information about you. It contains your credit report and such. Should you be able to control that information. I'm thinking yes. So you could remove negitive comments about your credit history. Obviously you'd not want to remove the positive information. So it would be up to you to build a lot of positive info. Banks probally won't like this.
Also, I worry about people who like my mother who will never think of checking the info stored with her UIN. So even with your restrictions in place, they probally won't be of benifit to a huge number of people, because they just don't care. I'd like to care, for them.
First the Social Security Number which when proposed to the people of the US was promised to not be used as a unique identifier, but just a way of tracking your payments into your social security account. Try doing anything in the US now without that Unique Identification Number. Get a job, get a phone, open a bank account, get a loan.
So now this, at least they seem to be a little more up front about the purpose.
Yes, I'm outraged by the loss off life and destruction of property. But I'll be more outraged by the sheep that allow things like this to pass.
This box seems sweet, but I have digital cable and nearly everything I like to watch is in the digital range. I think the that box can control a TV tuner by sending out it's own IR. But that still sucks, digital cable comes to me in MPEG2, it doesn't make sense to convert that to analog and then convert the analog signal back to digital to recompress it.
Plus why do I have to rent my digital converter box from the cable company, why don't they just standardise the format so we can have digital cable ready TVs, VCRs, and now PVRs.
The DirectTV people get to have Tivos built into their recievers.
Octane is the level of knock supression. High performance engines, ie. high compression, high reving, high temp, and forced aspiration are more likely to detonate. So you have to run a slower burning fuel to prevent detonation.
Faster burning fuels can produce more power and offer better milage if you car can run properly on it.
So octane has nothing to do with quality. Just run what is required by your engine.
I work for (run) a small town ISP. We sometimes fear the large national ISPs with their advertising budgets. But things like this just make me feel good.
We care about our customers. We fought to get each one, and do our best to keep them. I remember what it was like to be a subscriber. So, I run things now as I would have liked them to be run when I was on the other side.
We log when you log on and when you log off and what IP you were assigned. That is about it. I don't care what you do out on the net. But if you cause trouble and someone complains to us, then we take action.
Of course broad band is a little different, you can cause a lot of trouble quicker than with dialup. We are just now deploying broad band fixed wireless. I would like to keep running things the way I do now. I hope my faith in our customers isn't misplaced.
As I understand in the past this was very hard to do with X. The program itself would have to do screen captures and blend itself with the windows it was over.
The way E does the translucent move, is when you start to move a window, E does a screen grab of that one, unmaps the real window, then you move the screen grap, when you put it back down it remaps the real window in the right place. Try moving a window that has some motion in it. All action stops when you start to move.
With the render exention now in X11 it will be a little easier to do blending, saw Netscape with translucent menus at the 2000 ALS. But will all E17s widgets being rendered in OpenGL they should be able to neat things with eachother, but I still think there'll be some limits between windows.
That is one thing the E has going for it, everything can be changed.
Granted it wasn't the easiest thing to do in previous versions. But E17 is supposed to have drag and drop theme designing.
Unfortunitly every thing is now stored in EDB (databases) so I can't tweak my themes with vi. But there is a nice little database editor included. I'll just have to get used to that.
The original point (IMHO) was that copying or borrowing, the idea of using PDFs as a display (or however osx does it) would be better than making cool looking alpha blending using the current technology.
Why not use a technology that was designed for layering and alpha blending on a screen? OpenGL does that, and that is what E17 uses.
It was planned to be, but then the plug got pulled on the 2nd and 3rd films, so they wrapped up the ending of the 1st film. But then it did so well they got the go ahead to finish up the trilogy. Oh well.
How about not without incident, but just be able to complete the task.
I don't use Redhat, but I know from hanging out on l-k that there were some problems with the initial release of 7.1 that prevented it from being able to straightly "make bzImage".
I think I could do it now without incident. But I think it would be more important to be able to solve the problems that arrise.
However, a number the represented how closely related an incoming email and a known spam message would be a useful metric. Then you could have fuzzy filters that determined how close you would want to be before outright rejecting a similar message, or maybe just relocating it to a seperate inbox.
Well with a CRC I guess a slighly changed message will only have a slightly different checksum. But there is a good chance that 2 dissimlar messages will have the same sum. You'd need something like a large md5 sum to make sure your false positives are low. But the problem with md5 is just changing 1 byte largely effects the sum. So there would be no fuzzy matchting.
Actually they are already countering it without even knowing about it.
A lot of spam I get already has a unique identifing ID included in it. I assume this it to track valid e-mail addresses of people stupid enough to try to be "removed" from their lists.
Heh, no it is supposed to be vi has two modes, one that beeps and one that doesn't.
Don't forget, "vi the interface is in your mind."
Try this in a bash shell "set editing-mode vi", it effect all programs using readline.

Ah, so there is at least one other person that agrees with me.
A long time ago, I tried to compile vim on my custom Linux and it failed. Since I had grown up with Slackware, it was back to elvis.
A coworker keeps bugging me to install vim on our servers (which also run my much shaped up custom Linux) because he likes the colors.
I was considering giving it a shot with the release of 6.0 today. But your post has changed my mind, I will stay true to my editor.
Do not use them expecting something like notepad for windows. If you do you will hate them.
And conversely don't use Notepad for Windows if you are expecting vi.

Plus the fact that I keep seeing the ads for it on Sci-Fi.

With an extra one that you can punch through your ear for extra convience.
I apply for a new one every time, just make up a new name and address, and pay in cash.
Of course I don't go shopping that often so I can afford to entertain myself with these silly little pleasures.
Oh well I was hoping for an insiteful conversation on this topic, but Godwin's Law has been invoked. Everyone on to the next story.

EFM of course.

Underscores are not valid characters in host/domain names (no matter what Microsoft tells you). :P
